Because the "something nice" thread is very long, and catch-all Chicago threads are fun, and the more the merrier, since Chicagoans are taking over ILX shortly anyway.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the best pizza in the world.

THE BEST.

PERIOD.

Catty (Catty), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There are some very beautiful old houses.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

kenan, i left a message for ya on the long thread.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Chicago and all, but nuts to the pizza. If I wanted lasagna, I'd eat lasagna.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

do you hate food?!

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Excuse me, what did I say? BEST. PIZZA. EVER.
Good day to you sir.

Catty (Catty), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the best pizza i've had was in middletown, connecticut.

amateur!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i said good day!

Catty (Catty), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and Chicago is very flatteringly lit.

Catty (Catty), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the best pizza i've had was in middletown, connecticut

Piece in Chicago (which I like, btw) claims to serve "New Haven-style" pizza.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish that the speedboat rides were faster.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Mystic Pizza! (I've actually eaten at Mystic Pizza. And toured the old ship parked nearby. Snooze.)

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the best pizza i've had was in montréal

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing about Chicago pizza is, you best be ready to feel drowsy. One piece of it is a guaranteed nap. Two pieces could lead to coma and death.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I have yet to eat Chicago deep-dish pizza because of my revulsion of chunks of tomato. YYEEAAURRGHGHG.

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

fact: everyone in middletown is from sicily.*

*may be an exaggeration

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

What should Sarah and I do tonight?

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

give the kitties some lurv.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

that new sky orb looks cool...

PVC (peeveecee), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a sky orb? Are you talking about the bean? Cause I've seen that a couple of times already.

It's too bad I don't like dancing.

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's actually a giant one of these:

http://www.movieactors.com/photos-sf/sleepsm.jpeg

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know what to do tonight either.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

kelsey -- meet me at the hopleaf?

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to buy a suit this evening. any tips?

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

SKY BLUE.

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Vere ist der Hopleaf?

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

My friend Jim lives there.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Clark and Foster. Me and John and Kelsey's hood. xp

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm living by the hopleaf, let me know if you'll be there later on. i can stop by possibly.

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG: Amateurist would actually look AWESOME in a SKY-BLUE SUIT.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to buy a suit this evening. any tips?

hm. Make sure you get the cuffs tailored. the front crease should only break ever so alightly over your shoe.

That's all I got.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're going to Hopleaf, just try not to bring any homemade cupcakes in there, or else they'll get all snooty about it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"Cupcakes? You muzt order zee duck!"

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that Hopleaf-adjacent stretch where Clark starts to get near Ashland, so that you're driving down Ashland and you look to the right and you're like dude, why is there a street like five yards to my right?

Has anyone here ever heard the tune "Ashland Flies," by the there-and-gone Chicago band U.S.A.?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't actually know what we're going to do tonight. But certainly a job-finding celebration is an option. I'll talk to Sarah when I get home, and if we're up for it, give you a call.

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i am going for a sort of dress/casual thing. i found a great matching jacket and slacks at h&m (it's like brown ribbed cotton) but those fucks at h&m only make things for little skinny people. the largest jacket size they had was 38.

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i get to pack for school tonight, yay

todd swiss (eliti), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(It's all about driving up and down Ashland. Stencil probably has it on vinyl. It's a little dated, though, no flashing yellow lights anymore. But it's spot-on about how whoever you're driving next to at, like, Ashland and Division is quite likely to be right there next to you until you hit Lawrence or something. "This is a relationship, I'm asking you to roll down your windows.")

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

amateur!!!st, if you want to go preppy casual, jcrew has a nice corduroy blazer, i guess its cheap for jcrew as well.

todd swiss (eliti), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

if i go, i'll be bringing leaf with me. and i probably wouldn't get there until later. we've been two piles of lazy indecisiveness about what to do tonight.
but kenan! i haven't seen you in AGES. AGES!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i want matching jacket and pants though, otherwise i'll look all, whatever you look when you're at a wedding and your jacket and pants don't match.

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

No one is showing up anywhere until later. Except me, because I'm always early.

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

but kenan! i haven't seen you in AGES. AGES!

I know. Oh, life. It's bigger...

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

You all have to call me. And each other.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to the bottle early and leaving early.
i want to go bowling tomorrow.

but that's not why i'll be leaving the bottle early tonight.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

how late is later? and is everyone bringing their sig. others?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If I come, it will be in the company of Sarah McLusky, previously ILXor extraordinaire, and now only occasional ILXor.

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not, if I go. R. has softball tonight.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

what? we're not significant enough on our own?

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to bring Sarah, because apparently, without her, I only count as HALF as an ILXor (Plus I went to the RAWK show last night without her).

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Later = 10-ish? Just a guess.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not what i meant.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

NOIZE.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

you can buy the matching cords too, they have em.

the total would be about $166 i believe.

xxxxpost or so

todd swiss (eliti), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

have i met kelsey?

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

kenan, are you still rolling yer own?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh... depends. Sometimes. Gives me bronchitis, though, if I do it too much.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't imagine why .. . . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

have i met kelsey?

You'd know if you had. She's a force of nature.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Chicago and all, but nuts to the pizza. If I wanted lasagna, I'd eat lasagna.

-- nabisco

What pizza place is putting noodles and ricotta in their stuffed pizza?
Also, Chicago pizza is about more than just stuffed. There is an abundance of great, perfectly crispy, thin crust in the Chicago area.

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't quite know what to make of that . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't remember if I've met Kelsey. She was at that TAG thing Sarah and I played, but I don't recall if we were actually introduced or anything.

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

right. i only vaguely remember your faces. i don't think we chatted or anything. sorry about that.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

There is an abundance of great, perfectly crispy, thin crust in the Chicago area.

True, but that's not really "Chicago-style" pizza.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't quite know what to make of that . . .

YOU'RE A WILDFIRE, BABY! YOU'RE A HURRICANE! THERE AIN'T NO HOLDING YOU BACK!

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

or something.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i am terrible with names. i just was wondering if i had met you and couldn't put a name to a face. i think instead i've met some other people whose names i've forgotten.

amateur!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

what's your name? i think john has mentioned you before.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

No, you two haven't met. Kelsey and I go way back.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(Amst, I only just saw my gmail: response forthcoming!)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

we're college chums. and then some.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

are people going to be at the hopleaf for certain? i don't have a cell phone.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll go ahead and say that I'll definitely be there around 10. Don't know if anyone will be with me or what.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'll try to get Jessa to come out, though.)

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

cool. i'll try to swing by . . . alone if leaf is too jeg-lagged (he just got back from england yesterday). last night he stayed up until 10 & that was difficult. anytime his head was near something to rest it on, he was half asleep.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

True, but that's not really "Chicago-style" pizza.

Well that's just because everyone seizes on deep dish because it's uniquely Chicagoan. The thin crust here is still, y'know, made in Chicago and slightly different than the thin crust you can find in other cities.

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Pizza in Chicago is great, 'specially Lou Malanati's. But Chicago-style pizza is definitely inferior to east coast pizza. I've been to dozens of places from New England down to Philly that offer better slices, and don't take 45 minutes to order.

The Trib today or yesterday had a piece on the best east coast style pizza in Chicago. They mentioned some place around 1600 W. North, I think. There's also a place called Cafe Luigi's on Clark which is like full-on Brooklyn pizza. Piece in Wicker Park is good, too, and right by Quimby's, but their pizza tastes just like the pizza my wife makes. So, like, why bother, you know?

Oh, and that cracker-thin crust they serve out here is no substitute for real thin, either. Especially since Chicagoans cut thin crust into squares, so half the pieces have no crusty handle to hold on to.

Anyone been to Chicago Pizza and Ovengrinder Company on Clark, not too far south of Tower Records? They serve these pizza bowl things, basically a giant bowl made of crust with a stew-like sludge of toppings, sauce, and cheese in the middle. Definitely ... interesting.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The Trib today or yesterday had a piece on the best east coast style pizza in Chicago. They mentioned some place around 1600 W. North, I think.

That's almost certainly Piece, the "New Haven-style" pizza place: it's at 1927 W. North.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh whoops, never mind: you're obv. talking about someplace else.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the worst pizza, I ever had, was in chicago.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Piece is good for two things, though: the blanco pizza and the brewed-on-site beer.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

My band played there the other day, and I ordered a beer called "Baron Von Awesome's Summer Wheat"!!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.dickiethon.com/~rhoma/games/bball/review/images/sox05.jpg

This picture gives me a headache.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it cut into squares precisely because most of the pieces don't have crust.
"real" thin? What makes non-Chicago thin any more real?

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone been to Chicago Pizza and Ovengrinder Company on Clark

Yeah, that place is expensive. And it's like the only place in Illinois that doesn't have free refills.

Catty (Catty), Friday, 20 August 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Nightwatch!

Harold Media (kenan), Saturday, 21 August 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/images/pix/barsandclubs/lakeviewloungeband.jpg

An explaination.

Harold Media (kenan), Saturday, 21 August 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ouch, yr explanation is by a girl I went to college with. And grad school, too, she's all up in my neighborhood. I'm going to refrain from explaining why I find that amusing.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, come on. You can tell us!

Harold Media (kenan), Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't see it in the pic above, but the lead "singer" (who can't sing for shit, but they just mix him low) has this whole David Crosby thing going with the hair, and the drummer (also 50- or 60-something) has a mohawk. And the guitarist *shreds*. His solo on "Reelin' in the Years" kicked my ass all over the place. I was grinning through the whole set.

Thank you, jaymc and amateurist, for recommending that.

Harold Media (kenan), Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I just like the weird-ass alcove/bunker they play in. It makes them look animatronic.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

haha... it's the stage from a Chuckee Cheese!

Also, they never change the lights behind them. A green lighted sign says "Happy Holidays," and next to that some Valentine's Day pink hearts.

Harold Media (kenan), Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Amateurist: I rented Thief because you mentioned that the Green Mill blows up. You neglected to mention that it's Michael Mann's first movie, beautifully shot in Chicago, outlining the themes (or are they obsessions by now?) of all of his movies -- only darker. A really worthy rental.

I'm off the watch the commentary by Mann and James Caan.

Harold Media (kenan), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I once hung up Michael Mann's coat (leather), when I was working for a gallery in River North. His super hot daughter went to the School of the Art Institute and a piece in a show there.

robots in love (robotsinlove), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I didn't realize until I read the press for this movie that he was a Chicagoan. Huh. Learn somethin' new every day.

And may I say that the first ten minutes of Thief are brilliantly, perfectly 80's. By that I mean dated, but in a good way. Rainy streets, dark dark everything dark, neon blue titles (in Futura extra light), and music by Tangerine Dream while he cracks a safe and drives away... and drives, and drives, with this gorgeous synth pulse behind it all. I'm suddenly very sad that there's no Miami Vice on DVD yet.

Harold Media (kenan), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, you were in a dream of mine last night. It was me, you, all the temps from my office, and Jon Voight on a runaway el train. That's all I remember.

Harold Media (kenan), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

See--if it were Nick A. saying that, it might make more since, because I ran into him on the train the other day. But for you...where were the memories stored that allowed this dream to happen? I'm flattered, but very, very confused. Is Jon Voight in Thief?

robots in love (robotsinlove), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

No, he's in Runaway Train. And in the dream, I wasn't supposed to know you. You were playing the part of "Man on Train."

Harold Media (kenan), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)
