Wacky snacks, pt 608

So, while shopping at our friendly neighborhood organic store for the usual produce etc, I spotted a new item in the drink cooler: STEAZ.

http://www.steapsoda.com/images/product_07.gif
http://www.steapsoda.com/beverages.html

It's green tea-based soda, including root beer and cola. Of course, I had to try it because it just sounds WRONG. And the cola is kind of wrong, not tasting as much like cola as they probably thought, but the root beer is actually not bad. I'd imagine the fruity flavours (raspberry, lemon, orange and key lime) are probably much less wrong, which is why I haven't tried them yet.

The name is wrong, too. If I had studied harder in Nellyology 101 I might be more shocked, or not, but as it is it sounds kind of gross. Which, of course, is even more reason to drink it.

"I remember chip nuts"-style new answers here!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

DUDE!!!

New (to you) Beverages - S/D

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

SON OF A....did they change the name or something?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i think so... weird though huh?!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the funny thing is that you href-ed the steapsoda.com url and i href-ed the steazsoda.com url even though we flipped them in the tag text!!!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine why anyone thought it was a good idea. I'd have the root beer again, but yeah...it's pretty sweet.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Burple?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the cola tasted not unlike ass flavored wax.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

hey Stinky, did you ever eat those penisy squid chips man?

i have some ramen noodles in the kitchen that say they are fuku chicken flavour.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 21 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

penisy squid chips

A phrase that says so much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

All you ad execs out there, take note of that okay?

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 21 August 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Lookin' for the right time to shoot my Steaz...

nelly, Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, more wacky snacky. I was at this choco/candy shop today, and they had a whole pile of UK snacks, like Walkers chips (crisps) in flavours like lamb, steak and etc. That's not so wacky, because I know that crisps come in flavours that we're not used to in North America...I'm looking forward to trying the Thai Chili flavour.

What got me, though, is this:

http://www.globalhermit.com/ilx/yorkie2.jpg

What kind of neanderthal came up with this kind or marketing angle? I mean, it's not like beer ads aren't all sexist and shit, but seriously, though...what the fuck? All I could think of when I saw this is our regular Alison Moyet-baiting pal and his typical repartee. I ask again: WHAT? THE! FUCK?!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

thai chili flavour are really, really disappointing.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 22 August 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw those "yorkies" in a candy store, i had the same W?T!F?! reaction

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 22 August 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean you've only seen those ads now? Then again I should talk, the only reason I know about that campaign was from being over in the UK.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 August 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Besides which, clear subtext with which to amuse yourself: "You don't want those *girls* wrapping their mouths around a huge long chocolate bar. You want to do that YOURSELF."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 August 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Feta cheese crisps are where it's at Sean. Very Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in that they actually do taste like feta.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 23 August 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I saw a few other types there. The thai chili were actually not bad, but the lamb with mint scared me. I should go back and look for feta.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, I just got these new Necco TART Wafers, and first of all, they're not that tart, and secondly, they're kinda soft, like the texture of chewing gum but it's not gum. NECCO WAFERS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE HARD. Maybe these were just sitting on the shelf too long though, because what are the odds of someone actually wanting to eat Necco Tart Wafers?

Also I just realized that the phrase "Tart Wafers" could be kind of disturbing. Like those things they hand out with wine in church, but instead of being made of Jesus, made of sluts.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

EHHHH WHY ARE THEY SO CHEWY? And I'm only like halfway through the pack, but I know I'm going to have to eat all of them. BLLEEH.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you need to eat them all?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

GUH.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
i don't think these qualify as "wacky" but i CANNOT STOP EATING THEM. I heart nutritional yeast so much that i dump more on these before i eat them. by the bottom of the bag i end up looking like i just crawled out of a mining town. a mining town that mines nutritional yeast.

I found Sugar Babies at a convenience store near my work for 55 cents!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw some at walgreens yesterday & thought of you!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

SUGAR BABIES INFILTRATING CHICAGO, HOORAH!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

why the babies over the daddy?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sugar Daddy hurts my teeth and gets all slobbery. I like taking like three Sugar Babies, chewing them a little, and the sucking on them until there's just a little pile of sugar in my mouth.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i love how small candy can bring out the ocd in us all. i'm that way with whoppers & i don't stop until my tongue is raw, raw, raw. actually, your description of eating the babies almost makes me want some.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Nemo (JND), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh! i've heard of the idaho spud!! have you tried it, nemo?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I have, actually, in Portland, Oregon. I don't think they're sold much outside of the Pacific Northwest. It's just a big marshmallow covered in chocolate and coconut. I really like the idea of candy that's supposed to look (vaguely) like a potato, though.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

oh me too. potato candy. such a charming & darling idea. kinda sad that it's a marshmallow in there, though.
i want to try valomilk.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember a time long long ago when I was back in Grade 6, students had the choice to go to extra classes after school, more for fun than learning. One of the classes was chocolate-making and the woman that was teaching how to make them told us that the big secret for making the section in the middle was...potato. Yep. You mash up a bunch of potato, stir in some flavour, sugar and food colouring, and then dip it in a choco-wax mixture. And it was yummy, too.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also Chick-O-Stick:

http://www.browsenbid.com/candy/oldtime/chicostick_275.gif

I love how the Valomilk package proclaims it as "THE ORIGINAL 'Flowing Center' CANDY CUPS," as if there were lots of imposters.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

you can get chick-o-stick at the clark station near my apt. . . i tried one & was disappointed. i guess i like coconut a lot, but just not in candy I've recently been re-introduced to the clark bar (speaking of the clark station) & i'd forgotten how much nicer it is than the butterfinger...man. it's totally friday, almost 5 & i want candy in the worst way.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

chick-o-sticks were the holy grail of vegan candy for me.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

peanut chews are vegan!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny that chick-o-sticks are vegan. I think they were originally called Chicken Bones (or maybe that was one of their competitors).

Nemo (JND), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

true about the vegan-ness of peanut chews. i was always puzzled by that. chick-o-sticks were much harder to find, at least in nyc, and thus more highly prized even if there was a bigger chance that they'd be stale.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

tings are vegan! they are replacing my love of the cheese doodle...
are you still vegan, lauren?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

no, not anymore. i usually cook/shop vegan for myself at home, but i'll eat fish and dairy if i'm at a restaurant.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm about the same (minus fish) although right around *that* time of the month, sometimes i go on this unstoppable dairy kick.
did you get sick of eating terra pan candy? it seems like the most ubiquitous vegan candy...

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think i've had that. what are they?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

lemonheads & the like. red hots.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I've just been handed a package of Twinkies. The wrapper features Danica Patrick and two other women clad in racing gear. It reads "Hostess RACE DIVAS". Further on down, I have also been invited to play the Hostess TREATS & TRACKS instant win game.

Hold your head up, Danica.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Hold your head high.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I thought Race Divas would be like Billie Holiday and Big Mama Thornton.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Booooooooooooooooo!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)

At least Melanie Troxel won last weekend.

The holy grail is Taquitos, a review site devoted to snacks and candy.

No penis squid chips but they do have crabs.
