Old people shouldn't be good at computers. It's wrong. I don't go around playing lawn bowls and collecting doilies and parking in their spaces, so they should fucking stay off my patch.

Sexual Air Supply (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that is awesome. I love dick van dyke, I used to wish he were my dad!

MARY POPPINS STAR IN "SHARING A FLAT WITH ROGER DEAN" SHOCKER

Sexual Air Supply (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dick Van Dyke is hella cool and this article is great! I especially like this line:

But this didn't stop Dick Van Dyke. He just went out -- on his own, mind you -- and shot a live action background plate. Then -- on his own time at home -- he used his personal computer to create this realistic looking CG motorcycle which crashed. Dick then combined the two pieces of footage and screened them for the producers of "Diagnosis Murder." These folks were just stunned that the star of their show was this sort of technicial whiz.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't $200 seem a bit low for this, even for a diagnosis murder episode? PAY MR. VAN DYKE THE GOING RATE YOU CHEAPSKATES

jones (actual), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

PAY UP!

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd hate to think the creator of my beloved "the cgi alligators in Eraser" only walked away with a lousy couple of c-notes to show for it

jones (actual), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

in the most delightful way.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 12 November 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

Mr. Reagan would not have dismissed the story of the dolphins as Christian kitsch, but seen it as possible evidence of the reasonable assumption that God's creatures had been commanded to protect one of God's children. And most important, the idea that he would fear Mr. Castro, that he would be afraid of a tired old tyrant in faded fatigues, would actually have made him laugh. Mr. Reagan would fear only what kind of country we would be if we took the little boy and threw him over the side, into the rough sea of history.

He would have made a statement laying out the facts and ended it, "The boy stays, the dream endures, the American story continues. And if Mr. Castro doesn't like it, well, I'm afraid that's really too bad."

But then he was a man.

"My computer animating skills are this good! I'm not really here!"

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

I hafta think some of that "looking good" is explained by the daylong massage, the hair dye, the three hour fitting at tailor, the makeup, the corset, and the baby lamb-cell injections. But I wasn't there, so...

Aimless, Monday, 28 January 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

Just loved his show as a kid. My whole conception of comedy probably originates with him and Red Skelton on the one hand, and Jackie Gleason on the other.

OTOH Mary Tyler Moore.

pampering and preening or not, looking basically the same for 25+ years is pretty good going.

xpost ah the dreaded double standard personified

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 28 January 2013 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

I anticipated that! Poor Mare, but no one forced her to go the Surprised Trout route a la Joan Rivers.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 28 January 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

That's just it. The double standard did.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 28 January 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

But what do I know. I don't find women attractive at 25 OR 85.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 28 January 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

so she had the work done to get a cameo on a "Hot in Cleveland" episode?

three years pass...

Dick has a new book out; he was on the Jesse Thorn podcast last week, fielding questions about alcohol, Bert's lousy Cockney, and Andy Kaufman's stint on his '70s variety show.
