Jeremyprynne = seXioR hahamelt

mark s, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

did you keep that NME review where they got the man T P to do it?

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeremy Prynne = rather unusual chap.

RickyT, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And a librarian ... rowr

RickyT, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was a librarian once.

james, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ROWR

RickyT, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think we should all search for Tompaulin on nme.com to get them into the most requested artists list.

Madchen, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

is that (i think) JH Prynne who i once saw lecture? he's far too clever and obscure for me. anyhow, i feel a bit sad and crap plugging my band, even if it is at Casarotto's promptings, so i shall only say: listen to Peel on 20th november. we've also got a LIVE session sometime in January, so anyone who wants to come along to Maida Vale with some BEER and heckle us LIVE on radio one is most welcome.

katie, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That'd be him. He is Caius librarian and was on pretty good terms with my Caian ex-girlfriend when she was there.

RickyT, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, your ex gf was also too clever and obscure! :):)

katie, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what's Prynne got to do with all this?

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also WHAT IS A CAIUS?

(Methinks DEMONG in Buffy but probably more boring, eh?)

Sarah, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alan, i think someone is tekking the rise out of our bandname. thank god it's not bloody julieburchill that's all i can say :):)

katie, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Caius = Cambridge college attended by Alan and an ex of mine.

RickyT, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeremyprynne = nu-metal Linkin Park-style rock band of who make their own CDs out of plastic they synthesise themselves

mark s, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hang on just a second Mark... I've just read Katie's reference to your surname... could you be the same Mark who used to play some shit- hot music on Warwick Uni's campus radio station? And didn't you used to be good friends with a girl called Esther? And didn't she used to go out with my psychotic Greek-Cypriot ex-housemate Phivos? And aren't you like the biggest Sterolab fan ever??

I wonder.....

Trevor, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

har har! who's that film critic that speaks like a slightly more high pitched tom paulin? you know the one. adam and jo do their voices in exactly the same way.

ALSO. re my question above, you MUST have seen that NME review by tom paulin of tompaulin. tell me i didn't imagine it.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark cousins google NOW!

mark s, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i believe mark C is the world's biggest Stereolab fan...

i saw that review Alan - in the NME On section about a year ago. the man himself said we were beautiful and Celtic-sounding, though he's not into modern music himself (or words to that effect). he asked "they don't make a living out of this do they?" (alas not) it was ACE!!!!

katie, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Christ, Trevor, that's a mighty fine memory you've got there... Yes, I am indeed that one, though I'm frankly astonished to find someone who actually listened to W963! Blimey!

I, on the other hand, am appalling with names and faces, so I'm not quite so sure what I remember about you...

(Mark hangs his head in shame)

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that is, indeed, the bunny. first google i came across is a post where someone writes that he "over analises". quite.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm a pretty big fan of early Stereolab (*I am aware of wankiness of this statment, but it's true), but Random Transient Noise Bursts was a bit poor in comparison to their previous stuff, and they've never (IMHO) matched it since. Nowadays they seem to be up- their-own-arse noodly soulless crap, though I must admit I've barely listened to anything they've done post 1995.

Though if I ever want to feel good about myself, I can always go into that shop in Soho which has all the early 7 inches in plastic bags with "£45" labels attached to them...

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

His columns read like The Sun Says editorials, complete with overuse of typograpical emphasis.

RickyT, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who are we talking abt now? j.h.prynne has column in the sun shoXoR?!¡¿

mark s, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark C, you should listen to Stereolab's "Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night" from 1999, which imho is almost as good as their early material, speshly the tracks "The Free Design" and "Op Hop Destination". And their gig in Toronto last year, supporting Sonic Youth, was one of my favourites of all time.

MarkH, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cousins. See here

Idea of Prynne in Sun weird indeed.

, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

portmanteau = sarahs new favourite word of today

Sarah, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey Mark, your DJing helped me through my degree! The first time I ever heard MbV's "You Made Me Realise" was on your show. Yeah, I have an annoying capacity for remembering facts that no-one else does. I only met you a handful of times, but you did me a Stereolab tape with Peng! on one side and Space Age Bachelor Pad Music on the other side one time, which spookily enough, I was playing last night.

I think I was introduced to you by Esther, because you were on the same course together (or something). I vaguely remember another Mark as well, because I used to refer to you both collectively as "Marky Mark" for reasons I cannot recall. Small world!

Trevor, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to hand out with Stourbridge Paul and Essex Andy if that helps jog your memory. (Paul was on Esther's corridor too)

Trevor, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or "hang out" rather.

Trevor, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trevor! Mark! I used to like W963! (now called War or summat?) - but I could never get it! I only ever heard it in the minging orange and brown launderette or while downing filthy greasy grub in the Cooler Diner. I wish I'd have met you guys at Warwick: I'd have had a better laugh

Related point: did either of you write for Retroactive Baggage? I reviewed 'The Jazz Age' by Jack once...

Will, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm afraid not, Will.

I better take this opportunity to apologise to Katie for monopolising her plugging space. I promise to buy a copy of Tompaulin's album as penance!

Trevor, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hurrah! our chartbound arc continues apace!

katie, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't write for Retroactive Baggae, but I was (sort of) mates with the founders - they were a couple of years below me, I think, and nice (if slightly cliquey) chaps. I was a bit annoyed with them because, after being promised the running of the regular indie disco (the Union one, not any of the society ones, of which I ran one, called Offbeat), they were asked to do it instead. Hmph.

It's an indie, indie, indie, indie, indie world or Warwick!

p.s. obligatory Tompaulin mention is that I shall be including "Ballad of the Bootboys" on my next compilation tape for my friend.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark, 'Offbeat' was still going by the time I left Warwick (1999) so you did well!

Will, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, but I didn't set it up though. Legend has it it was formed by Johnny Cigarettes, soon to be IPC music writer, in 1989. I was president 1995-6. We, naturally, roXoRed.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(I wuv Sheffield Offbeat)

(shock change from Warwick talk!)

Sarah, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sheffield offbeat is indeed very good, I've had some groovy times there.

chris, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

AND WAS FOUNDED BY CHAP WHO ATTENDED WARWICK OFFBEAT, PLEASE NOTE. He was just bitter cos we always gave him the 8pm DJ slot, hehe.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The past comes back to haunt everyone! Now, can anyone admit to listening to a kind and charismatic DJ at UCLA from 1989 to 1992, I know you want to...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

According to the NME, Tompaulin's LP is available for a measly £8.99 on vinyl from Selectadisc, don't you know. So there really are no excuses now.

This has been a public information service. I thank you.

Trevor, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seeing as I've just ashamed myself in front of the whole library with my Tompaulin alarm (due to not digging the 24 hour clock) (and wearing sound proof headphones so I didn't even notice), I'll remind you that Tompaulin are on John Peel in exactly 12 hours, for people like me who've yet to hear a note by them.

Graham, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Katie sorry to say this but Strawberry Switchblade Since Yesterday cover - was rubbish! all the joyous energy from the original track was drained and "Jamie" sounds so wimpy and boring with his lo-fi vocal style.

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, but the bass playing was superb!

katie, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
