www.ryanair.com is having one of its great '90p' sales through tonight. i'm quite a fan of picking a place and going for a weekend, but i'm not feeling inspired by the map, and don't recognise many of the city names. so will you help me pick a place to go? have you been anywhere great? anywhere i should avoid?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 23 August 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I should do this. I'm annoyed that I don't get a holiday this year. What kind of places are they offering? Anywhere Scandinavian?

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 23 August 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

several scandanavian places. i've done stockholm with ryanair, not too far from the city...

colette (a2lette), Monday, 23 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

do ryanair fly to Helsinki?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but they do tampere

david acid (gareth), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

dunno. it's hard to figure out because they often fly 'near' big and well-known places. so i'm hoping that the other people that have been to random ryanair destinations will tell me which ones are worth going to.

also, at job number 2 now, so can't spend all day on the site trying to figure it out for myself. boo.

xpost-- gareth-- you're ideal for this thread, since you've been everywhere. where do you suggest?

Cleethorpes.

In February we went by Ryanair into Gothenburg, then got the train down to Malmo, and flew Ryanair back to London from there. Really nice trip, a total culture shock... Gothenburg airport is tiny and we had no cash when we landed - to our horror there was no cash machine or nothing in the airport, we had visions of having to get a cab into town (quite far) and paying when we got there... but the lovely bus driver took our miniscule fare via credit card! Overall, just about the friendliest country I think I've ever been to...

Chris and I had a lovely weekend in Malmo in February. The shopping was interesting, museums were quite cool (we got to go om a u-boat!) and the beach was incredibly pretty in the snow with the sun shining. it wasn't too great once it started raining and was cold and miserable. We didn't take advantage of the nice train that goes over the huge bridge to Copenhhagen, which opens up the possibilities..

The twisting torso building (apartments) that they were building:

You can just about see the big bridge in the distance

The downside - this was at about 2.30 in the afternoon:

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

do they fly close to berlin?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, we got the train to Copenhagen - it's really cool! such a long bridge... it was nice to see the little mermaid and stuff but we didn't have time to do it properly... It's the little things I remember, like putting Swedish money into the coffee machine on the train and getting Danish momey back as change!

reclusive hero (reclusive hero), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Schoenfeld: its just a short train ride into the city. (That's in answer to the Berlin question, btw)

If you went to Malmo you might get to see Nina Persson out doing her shopping - mmmm.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It was amazing how many cool indie swedish people there were in Malmo! There were lovely design shops in one area we found, and in the sales clothes weren't that unreasonable, and different from what you would find on the high streets in the uk.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how this is suddenly the Sweden Hype Day on ILX!

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Malmö. If I had to live anyplace but Stockholm, it'd be Malmö.

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the same in Gothenburg... we went to see the Essex Green and it was mobbed, total superstar adulation!

x-post - Malmo seems to be the place to namedrop at the moment as far as I can work out - Franz Ferdinand recorded their album there, Annie is from there, I'm sure there have been other recent indie references too....

reclusive hero (reclusive hero), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

But, Annie = Norweigan, no? From Bergen?

My favourite Malmö band = The Radio Dept.

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, the only thing that's making me hesitate about going to sweden is that i've been already, and there's loads of places in europe that i haven't been (except spain, italy, switzerland and france).

will keep malmo in mind, though...will it be freezing in october/november?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go back to Malmo, it's great, the beer's a bit pricey but other than that it's charming.

Yes, it'll vbe cold and dark, but don't let that put you off, go and see the man in the Malmo ff (footie team) official shop, he's very nice.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i've wanted to go to malmo but that's probably because so many cool bands seem to be from there. (hanna i just got that radio dept cd - it's released officially in the UK next next week - i love it!)

yeah colette try someplace in italy maybe - even the little towns ryanair fly to are supposedly good to see.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

does it have London? I must try that place out sometime.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You could choose from any one of 3 London airports, Ronan!

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, try london more ronan.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa! do I enjoy the picturesque ripoff of a train from stansted, or the sweat dripping Paddyness of a the tube from Heathrow???

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

that's cool though. maybe I'll go to London again soon.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

If you go to Venice, i.e. Treviso, you can visit any of the lovely towns in the Veneto, like Asolo (where my folks have just been).

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

trieste?santander?karlsruhe?

david acid (gareth), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa! do I enjoy the picturesque ripoff of a train from stansted, or the sweat dripping Paddyness of a the tube from Heathrow???

You could even hitch from London's comedy aiport, Luton.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yay! i'm going to berlin.

note to ronan: try london after oct. 5th, please.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah, back up - does that mean you're moving here?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

no lauren is reminding me that if I leave Ireland before the 4th moon of October I turn into a goat.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

again

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

But, Annie = Norweigan, no? From Bergen?
My favourite Malmö band = The Radio Dept.

Sorry, my mistake, it was Radio Dept I meant! There is definitely something else that has got a Malmo connection though, just can't think what...

reclusive hero (reclusive hero), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

RONAN: MAN OF GOATS

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That was possibly the lamest injoke I've made since the last freya gag. Apologies.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be on an extended trip.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 23 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Zurich!
Actually i have no idea if they fly there, im just blindly recommending it...Chocolate!

lyra (lyra), Monday, 23 August 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ryanair fly to Bergamo and pass it off as Milan. It's not too far really, but Bergamo itself is really pretty and medieval whereas Milan is like Birmingham with a nice cathedral.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 23 August 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Bergamo (they call it Milan) is quite nice and you can train up to the Italian Lakes, the Sud-Tirol, Friuli or northern veneto lots of lovely small towns, nice wine, great food.

Ed (dali), Monday, 23 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, obv.

Ed (dali), Monday, 23 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, we can only fly to Brit-cits from here. Of course, we are only paying 90c for our flights, as opposed to the Queen's own 90p, but I still think it's a bit unfair that the people on the Big Rainy Island can go to far flung places like Stockholm and Rome while the people on the Small Rainy Island can go to Teesside and East Midlands.

I think I shall go to Glasgow at the beginning of December and do my Christmas shopping in Fopp. Result.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to Brussels the last Ryanair sale. It was very nice, but I reckon Bruges might be nicer.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
nice bit of advertising:
