"The story of Babar. I never realized how beautiful it was."

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but WTF,
his relationship with that
rich old wrinkly chick

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's my head...it's my head...it's my head...it's my head...it's my head...it's my head..."

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to find it a bit sinister, but I still liked it. It was totally it's own thing and I'm surprised it got popular outside of France.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I sometimes still think of a hot air balloon when someone mentions a honeymoon. Honey balloon!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, if only for the weird hierarchical socialism that the elephant village was modelled on.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVED Babar. Him and Curious George were my boys.
Hardly remember it. Didn't he and his family go live on some other planet, and build a village consisting of floating platforms?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my parents stopped me reading it at that stage.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking of this.

He gets abducted by aliens! The illustrations in that one fascinated me and my life has been somewhat of a disappointment since I have never encountered any landscape such as the ones depicted there.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I Think Zephyr got married to a mermaid in one of them. I also remember one where they visited a castle and couldn't get some knight armour off one of the littler elephants.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, for founding the Mogul dynasty.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i had no idea it was french. i loved babar.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure it's French. We had a lot of books at my Grandparents' house with that lovely Café Rouge handwriting in it.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(omg where's Ally????????)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Babar with a crazed tender fervour I now pretty much reserve for long-term girlfriends and LBA2. I think I still might.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the first few episodes of the cartoon were pretty damn dark, gave "The Lion King" a run for its money in the young-child-faces-terrifying-tragedy stakes even, iirc.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I fucking loved the whole Babar experience. And every character had a great name (Celeste being top of the heap).

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I must admit I watched it, but really can't remember it. Around the World in 80 days with Willie Fogg left a lot stronger (and more worrying) imprint on my mind.

___ (___), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i love babar. he's second only to george and martha (the hippos) in the sentimental childhood favorite department.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, I'm here, I'm just late...hopefully not too late...

Once, I dated a man. A few of you, like Dan, know him.

He had a sister, who...hmmmm. I think she came to stay with us? From time to time. She did not live with us. Though this is not relevant. She looked maybe a little like Jenny McCarthy, but not so blonde and plastic.

One night, she was heard, moaning in her sleep. Sexy moans, you know. That kind of dream.

Then it was realized she was moaning this:

"Ohhhhhhh Babarrrrr"

Therefore: Babar: classic.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Lock ILX.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

So it definitely wasn't Laetitia Sadier?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I am extremely annoyed to not know this story before now.

Babar = classic as hell, of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I was going to post something about liking Jeremy the bear better, but I think Ally's story has obliterated all rational thought and replaced it with... uh.. uh...

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

...fess up ladies, I's know some-a youse be havin Babar sex dreams too, innit?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Weren't there some sinister imperialistic undertones that ran through the series?

If so, classic anyhow, because I love elephants.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ohhhhhh Babaaaar... Crush my indigenous ways... Colonize me... Yeah, like that..."

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

She likes it baretusked.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

And you know she takes it from both tusks at the same time. oh baby.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the music for the Story of Babar by Poulenc. I gave my niece a CD with an American girl reading it in English and a French boy in French.

youn, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

So classic, colonial overtones notwithstanding. I wore out a read-along record of the one where they're getting ready to go to war -- was it with the rhinos? It all seemed very dramatic, and then of course Babar somehow saved the day, or maybe it was his son who saved the day and averted the war.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

babar, where were you last year?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

erik, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

God I hated those rhinos~!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Shithouse, trite, boring, ridiculous."

That's a quote from me as a 6-year-old.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what was the rhino leader guy's name again?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

what are the colonial overtones ?

anthony, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't the humans capture and learn them elephants human culture, which later spread as well to the rhinos and then what was territorial spats grew into full-fledged war between them? I'm going by 10 years-divorced memory, so I might be making things up.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 06:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the Rhino king was called something like Rotaxus or something. There's a trrack near the beginning of the Swayzak Fabric mix where a synthetic voice whispers something like that and all I can think of is those bloody rhinos.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Rataxas, that's it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

Ally's story upthread has destroyed my sanity anew.

Meantime, from the creators of the Twilight movies....

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

If Babar starts sparkling I am going to have to kill myself.

ô_o (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Searching "gothic babar" doesn't turn up much yet...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Anyone remember which episode of Babar had him running through a junkyard to escaspe wild boar/warthog that was chasing him?
