Do you shave with the grain or against it? Which works better for you?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

against!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

First with, then against, for the tuff spots.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

With a very sharp blade, like morris said. With a duller blade, only with.

Harold Media (kenan), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems like shaving against the grain makes more sense, but with the grain is easier because of gravity.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

This is such a white person question.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU KNOW MY MIND

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I take a sharp piece of rock and dip it in crude oil and cut with the grain, like Vin Diesel in Pitch Black

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems like shaving with the grain will never get you a good shave if you ask me.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

This is such a white person question.
why?

shaving against the grain seems completely insane to me. It ruins my skin. Also, WTF up with the Mach 3 or Turbo 4 blades? How much skin do you really want to tear off your face?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it only seems to work if i go against the grain, with the grain, and then sort of sideways too. the downside obv is RAZOR BURN ow.

when the barber uses a straight razor he just goes with the grain and does a neat job, but i'd be too scared to use a straight razor.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I will always shave against the grain if I can help it. my skin is fine, but then I do use an impressive array of treatments.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.walgreens.com/dbimagecache/22991.gif

What is this, the OK Corral? You don't need those peskers razors anymore - not with MAGIC SHAVE!

andy, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

People of Anglo-Saxon/Aryan type decent aren't going to have the "curly hair doesn't grow in one direction" issue that some other people might have.

Though I will tell you, no one's armpit hair grows in one direction. Bastard armpit hair.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

to be honest i do it like morris but i always always make sure i get it against the grain at least once. i shave when i shower but unlike stallone i do not shit when i shower hence:

me - shit (shower and shave)

stallone - (shit shower) and shave

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaving against the grain will give most black people a festive face full of razorbumps HUZZAH!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost: "shit shower")

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

against!

but i hardly ever shave anymore.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i do it against the grain. if you shave it with the grain, you dont shave much off. or not enough. and to get it all smooth, the grain needs to be worked against.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

oh right.
I am not really a white person (half indian) so I do not have gobs of facial hair, so shaving with the grain does well enough for me.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I will tell you, no one's armpit hair grows in one direction. Bastard armpit hair.

yeah, but i presume you can just kind of hack off the armpit hair in a way you can't do with your facial hair. i mean no one will point at you and call you names if you've nicked a spot in your armpit.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

as if - schoolbus chants of 'hey madonna! you missed a spot!' to thread

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I typically only really shave once a week, on Monday morning, with a shitty disposable razor and shaving cream and all. The rest of the week I just use an electric razor to keep things in line. So usually I have a couple of really long ugly hairs growing out of my throat by Friday and I look like a hobo. Sarah just guilt-tripped me into buying a Mach III but I haven't tried it yet.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone's hair have NO GRAIN?

that is an absurd sounding collection of words.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you ever had to put antipersperant on top of an open wound?

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

My Jewish facial hair needs to be shaved with the grain, except where it doesn't.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The most important shaving tool I own:

http://images.sharperimage.com.edgesuite.net/all/en/images/products/SE375-PIP.JPG

Lightly with (to lubricate the blade), firmer against, touch-up sideways.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

what does that shaving powder do? does anyone really use it? is it like a dehydrated Nair thing?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My cousin used to make me help him Nair his back, one summer that I was staying with him. It was so gross.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Harold Media (kenan), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ally that story is gross in more ways than one

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Allyzay, that is vomitous.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

But slightly less vomitous than a hairy back. Look at is as public service.

Harold Media (kenan), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I shave my pink Anglo/Irish/Danish hair with then against the grain. Have stubble by afternoon but not enough hair to grow amusing facial hair shrubberies.

Ally, I commiserate.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That dude in the shower reflection appears to be holding his razor Keith Moon-style.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I later drew up plans to blow up my cousin's car and told him he was dead to me, but not because of the Nair, though that should've been enough to make me want to kill him.

My dad has crazy facial hair. It grows in all crazy and like in 40 different colors. The hair on his head is totally normal and all solid brown though. I don't get why his beard hair is apparently related to George Clinton.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaving in the shower gets the stubble so much softer and easier to shave. And no standing freezing my nipples off over a sink of hot water in the winter.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Against the grain. Then again I use an electric razor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.drummerworld.com/drum/Keith-moon%203.jpg

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, about Keith Moon, not Jewish facial hair.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

morris otm: First with, then against, for the tuff spots.

i only shave every third day or so, though. i like the mach 3, mainly because the blade's got no back so it's easy to clean. blades are xpensive, though.

aftershave?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i shaved BY CANDLELIGHT yesderday. pretty intense. not all that effective.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck shaving. I so wish there was a way to permanently eliminate facial hair.

If I use a straight razor, I go against, and then with. But I absolutely hate it because my face bleeds and then I'm left with razor burn and a sore face for a couple days. Shaving with the grain has the same effects, just lessened somewhat. but if I only go with the grain, I'm still left with stubble and so it's pointless. And apparently my stubble is super-tough and scratchy so if I plan to be kissing someone (and especially if I plan to have my mouth farther down the woman's body than her face), I have to be completely smooth or it will hurt her.

However, the one advantage to never getting laid is the fact that I don't have to worry about stubble, so I can just use an electric razor . Even that hurts my face somewhat though. I generally only shave once every 2 or 3 days.

Lingbertt, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I shave every day before work and sometimes again in the evenings if I'm going out.

Someone bought me a MachIII for Christmas and I was a bit pissed off at them at the time for basically making my whole shaving experience more expensive (works out about £1 a blade, I think) but now that I've discovered the wonders of the MachIII price is no object. It's been 5 hours since I last shaved and I ony barely feel the stubble. Get one expensive razor.

I always go with the grain but I do have some stubborn chin hair that needs to be attacked from all angles, even with three-bladed-lubrastrip-microglide-thingummy-wotsits.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck everything: we're going to five blades.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i shave in the shower--against the grain, with the grain, whatever--and it seems to work much better than shaving after i get out of the shower. no cuts, no scrapes, no red face.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

adam (adam), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I never understood chicks who shaved anywhere besides in the shower. Some chicks in college would shave like, standing with one foot resting on the sink. WTF?

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Amst OTM except that my spatial skills are so bad, I need a mirror or I end up shaving my ears off.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I shave with the grain, because I don't like the feel of a real close shave, I prefer some stubble. I also love shaving in the shower. I have a shaving brush and some sandelwood shaving soap, it's the best part of the morning.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I've mentioned the Sharper Image shaving mirror before: http://www.sharperimage.com/us/en/catalog/productview.jhtml?sku=SE375
They used to have a cheaper one that wasn't lighted, but I can't find it.

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I shave three times a day, always with the grain. Damn people, it's an inmportant life principle, never mind shaving.

A close shave is unimportant and irrelevant. It's a con by the blade manufacturers. You don't need a close shave. What's the point? It will be unclose two hours later anyway.

This thread always gets me fired up, inspired even.

moley, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I shave against The Man!

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

He's a rebel, he goes against the grain - and women love him.

A thought has just struck me. Is shaving with the grain camp?

moley, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It will be unclose two hours later anyway.
two hours can be very important!

Lingbertt, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What are you planning to do in those two hours Lingbert?

If I read you correctly, you are planning to snog a woman, yes? Rub UPWARDS when kissing a woman and you won't give her sandpaper rash.

moley, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

But when you're caught in the throes of passion, it can be difficult to keep the contact moving solely in one direction. Plus, whiskers grow in different directions on different parts of my face, so it's hard to judge.

Lingbertt, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Just move different parts of your face in different directions.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You should not shave anyway just before kissing a woman - you will smell of lanolin. She will call you Aftershave Dave and laugh and you will be unable to perform.

moley, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not difficult at all for me to shave with the grain, and my skin feels quite nice afterward.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

that shave-in-a-bag stuff is pretty good!

RAZ0RS EDGE, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM re: shaving AFTER a shower - it sucks! Instead of shaving DURING a shower, however, I shave BEFORE the shower. Wash my face, shave, & brush my teeth before showering. (Undoubtedly, washing / wetting one's face BEFORE shaving, regardless of when you showered, will make shaving easier. Moist skin & wet hairs. Wheee!) It helps wake me up BEFORE the shower (so hopefully I remember to wash my hair & other bits), and my shaves are much much much closer. (Mach III ahoy!) And I shave with the grain, all over the place, including my neck. Shaving against the grain, I got weird fucked-up blemishes on my neck, like I was pulling my hairs out with rusty tweezers. My skin is very sensitive. Now that I'm doing right by it, my skin is beautiful (when it's not pocked w/ pimples from me forgetting to change my towels more than once every 2 weeks). And I shave every dingdongin' day, because I cannot stand stubble @ all.

I should probably Nair my back. I won't ask anyone to help, unless I hate that person.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I shave with AND against. no facial skin problems aside from the occasional cut. then again, I use one of those higher end razors with the exchangeable cartridges and reuse the razor until that little and somewhat useless special astringent strip wears out. No disposables for me unless I'm travelling (and they cut me all over no matter which way I shave)

God I barely grow anything on my face but everything comes out in every which way - there is no design plan to my facial hair situation. Once it becomes noticeable I shave it all off. I don't really think there's a science to shaving but I've been told that shaving with the grain as your last strokes reduces bumps or something so I do a three pass maneuver -- with the grain, against the grain, and then with the grain.

Fortunately I only have to shave like once, twice a week though.
