Peanut allergies and eating the whole jar

I am quite used to being around people with serious/fatal food allergies. My new roommate is allergic to peanuts and so far I have abstained from eating peanut products in the house. But today I got a jar of peanut butter as a gift. As I was on my way home I was wondering what it must be like to be the person with a potentially fatal allergy who is seeing non-allergic people calmly handling and consuming something that would spell certain death. What is it like for a peanut-allergic person to see a jar of peanut butter in the fridge? Nerve wracking, I'd imagine.

So then, I started thinking that the polite thing to do would be to consume the entire jar of peanut butter in one sitting. What could physically happen to me if I ate a whole jar of peanut butter in one go? Anything lastingly detrimental, or would I just vomit?

I get the ick on when people around me eat fish, to which I am allergic. But not because I think they're inconsiderate. It's just that the smell makes me all vomitty. It doesn't bother me philosophically or consideration-wise - well, unless someone is doing something bloody inconsiderate like frying smelly fish without opening the window.

It's not like peanut butter has a smell or something...

But I imagine seeing a jar of peanut butter -- even though sealed -- would feel like seeing a loaded gun or something else really dangerous. One food-handling mishap could equal a trip to the hospital.

Perhaps eating the whole jar would make _you_ allergic?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 08:51 (twenty years ago) link

Why don't you ask your housemate how he/she would feel about it?

I don't know, maybe they're oversensitive about it. But I'm guessing they're probably not if they've had this allergy a long time. You learn how to handle reactions to it. And with regards to something like that, it's *always* more considerate to be asked, rather than to just have someone assume how you would react.

I suppose it would depend on the person. Allergy to peanut + fear of hospitals = Teh Major Fear

Yeah... I should just ask this guy. No harm done, I'm sure-- people with peanut allergies are used to asking questions, so I'm sure they'd appreciate people asking what goes and what doesn't. I guess I was just more interested in what would happen if I ate a whole jar of peanut butter in one go.

You would actually turn into a peanut.

I mean, where else do they get that Mr. Peanut guy from?

He was a secret government genetic experiment.

I have nut allergies. Not peanuts though for some weird reason, only cashews, pistachios and almonds. when i eat one my throat and tongue swell. i suppose if i ate enough i would die.

What sort of person gives you a jar of peanut butter as a present? Even crunchy and organic, that isn't exactly much a gift, is it?!

___ (___), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 11:22 (twenty years ago) link

If you ate the whole jar you could feasibly sensitise yourself to peanuts and become allergic yourself. I'd probably give it a miss.

You would also throw up, obv.

(actually, if anyone does have a spare jar of organic peanut butter, could they give it to me as a gift as I can't find it anywhere? Thanks!)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 11:33 (twenty years ago) link

i buy organic peanut butter from Trader Joes.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 11:37 (twenty years ago) link

Co-op are big on the Organic, Crunchy peanut butter. I have a small addiction to it, to be honest, but it is crap for making satay sauces (it is a bit too near the consistency of concrete).

Fields, I just want to thank you for "nerve wracking" instead of "nerve racking."

That's probably because peanuts are not nuts - they are legumes.

I have a bunch of food allergies, but as with most allergies the severity of the reaction to the food has changed over time. I used to be very allergic to chocolate, and would break out in hives if I ate some. Now I have to eat tons and tons to get a reaction.

I never minded if other people were eating chocolate around me - I did mind if the dessert menu at the restaurant did not contain a single chocolate free item. I can see no reason to not put the stuff in the fridge, though you might not want to eat it around them because peanut butter is pretty smelly.

marianna, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago) link

mei and markelby correct...you could definitely make yourself allergic to peanuts yourself if you have too much in a sitting. Worse, it'll bung you up for days and you'll wish you were dead.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

My wife used to work as a pre-school teacher, and a number of her students had peanut allergies. If they're serious enough, this is no joke. She had kids who had to carry epi-pens--personal ephedrine injectors--in case they came into contact with peanuts. And in some cases, the contact only has to be freakishly slight. She had kids go into full-on reactions after touching something touched by a kid who had eaten a chocolate chip cookie sometime before (many snacks have peanuts or at least peanut residue involved).

It all depends on the person and their allergy and their level of comfort with it, but I'd leave it with a neighbor or something til I checked it out. Or eat it, mebbe. I think the only reaction you're likely to have to eating a whole jar in one sitting is an inability to button your pants the next day.

The smell of peanut butter is just peanut-butter-oxide getting on your receptors, right? If the allergy is severe, would the smell be enough to cause a reaction?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 15:10 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, the smell of fish is enough to set off my allergies!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago) link

I dunno, but like I say, the parents of these kids Live in Fear.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago) link

If there's enough allergen to trigger smell receptors, then there is enough allergen to get into the lungs and get directly into the bloodstream. In fact, smelling large amounts of fish can actually set me off quicker than eating fish, because it hits the bloodstream quicker, or something. Ick!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

I guess I won't be baking you a fish cake!

I am allergic to peanuts and several months ago I accidentally ate a cookie that looked like chocolate chip but the dough was actually made using peanut butter. I had to run out to a store and grab a bottle of Coke and chug it in order to wash out my throat (the carbonation helps), and I felt ill the rest of the day.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

I think mine is relatively mild but it ain't no joke, peanuts would kill me if they had the chance.

Recipe for the most ginormous painful shit you ever took:

*eat an entire jar of peanut butter in one sitting
*drink a half-gallon of whole milk (you'll need it to wash the PB off the sides/roof of your mouth occasionally)
*three bowel-movement-less days

My mind is blown. I never knew this. Am I like the guy who is just learning that a tomato is a fruit?

The munchies + being so broke all you have is peanut butter and milk = learning THE HARD WAY.

TOMATO IS A FRUIT WTF!

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

My dad occasionally plants a small patch of peanuts for personal eating pleasure and because he's got too much time on his hands. They're actually kind of fun to harvest -- pull the plants by the stems, shake off loose dirt, stand 'em up in upside-down bunches so the "nuts" dry out a little, come back in a few days and pull the nuts loose from the rest of the plant. More fun to harvest by jerking plants out of the ground like a madman than by carefully picking bruisable fruit.

You would obviously have to be quite selective about what restaurants you ate at, no? That sounds very limiting and annoying; my nut allergic friends are able to feel reasonably confident simply by avoiding Thai (and other cuisines of southeast Asia) and asking lots of questions.

Wait.. a sec.. I don't get it. You got a jar of peanut butter as a gift?

And yeah, I got a jar of fairly nice organic PB from my mum. I am completely broke and my mum worries about my protein levels (me being a vegetarian and all).

my daughter was just diagnosed with peanut and tree nut allergy -
sucks!

It does. I've got that in a big way. Avoid Thai restaurants and anything with pesto (pine nuts).
