This one, like a lot of other interactive fiction, was totally impossible without hints.

This, Zork, Borderzone and A Mind Forever Voyaging = best infocom games.

Don't forget to pick up the goddamn mail, or you'll never get the babel fish!

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Although it should be said that this one was designed to be annoyingly difficult in places, as a parody, rather than just from bad design. If that makes a difference. (Well, and indeed, once you do it, it does seem "ha ha" rather than "argh stupid programmers.)

Best Infocom game is surely Nord & Bert Couldn't Make Head Nor Tails Of It.

Well, I like it.

God, that game was impossible. Possibly because I was 12 years old at the time I played it but I remember the no tea/tea bit and the Babel fish sequence being an absolute killer. I might actually download this and have another crack at it just to see if its as frustrating as I remember.

I doubt the BBC-sponsored populist version of the game will be anywhere near as deliberately obtuse, mind.

woah woah woah:

From an anonymous source close to the company, I've found myself in possession of the "Infocom Drive" — a complete backup of Infocom's shared network drive from 1989. This is one of the most amazing archives I've ever seen, a treasure chest documenting the rise and fall of the legendary interactive fiction game company. Among the assets included ... the source code and game files for every released and unreleased game Infocom made.

You can play the unreleased sequel to Hitchhiker's!
