Okay, you have a film festival. Neve Campbell and Warren Beatty are there. NO ONE CARES. Shut up.

thanks,
THE REST OF THE WORLD

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Neve Campbell. I'm kinda ashamed of this. There's really no good reason to.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Toronto, too. But there's plenty of reasons for that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

her teeth are crazy-looking in person.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

DEAR REGINA:

You get your water from a reservoir filled with buffalo droppings. Apart from this, NO ONE CARES. Shut up!

thanks,
Toronto

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ps to Huck: Hey, when are you actually coming here already? We need to get you in on some of these FAPs.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Toronto's okay. It's just the morning national news was all about the Toronto Film Festival and how star-studded it is, yet the only celebs mentioned (over and OVER) were Warren/Annette and Neve.

xxxxpost

maybe soon, maybe later

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I live in Toronto and couldn't possibly care less about said film festival.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotta side with Huck on this one.
I couldn't care less about the film festival. Never have.
(xpost Tantrum's with me too)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, there's a film festival?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I would start my days a lot less angry if I stopped watching Canada A.M.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Actual sentence from a Canadian Press news article: The Toronto International Film Festival is the largest and most prestigious film fest in the western hemisphere.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it gets more premieres and is prolly more international than most American film fests though (at least that's my neophyte impression).

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

And one of our favourite ILXors might want to find a new log-in name:
The fest even had its first controversy which erupted weeks before the opening, in Casuistry: The Art of Killing a Cat, a documentary that generated anger over allegations it glorified animal cruelty.

xpost,
but it's hardly the most prestigious.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yes i believe that sentence is correct (but for personal reasons: FUCK YOU ANYWAY TORONTO FILM FEST)
xp

jones (actual), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost to Huck - I dunno, I feel like I read about the Toronto fest more than others, even NY's fest, so I dunno how to really gauge prestigious but that must count for something.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, maybe I'm just bitter that the Yorkton International Film Festival never gets written up in Variety.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Morgan City, Louisiana has the largest and most prestigious Shrimp and Petroleum Festival in the Western Hemisphere.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yes i believe that sentence is correct (but for personal reasons: FUCK YOU ANYWAY TORONTO FILM FEST)

haha i second that emotion

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

it never ceases to shock me how petty the rest of canada gets about anything nice that happens in toronto.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever you say toronto boy

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh look, I'm Toronto, crying because nobody likes me, boo hoo hoo.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry, Toronto, I'll console you...with my penis.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That was weird. Sorry, I'm American.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Chunk-chunk, dunna-dunna-dun-da-NA!

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(that's that riff from "American Woman")

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No offense, Huck, but you're pretty bad at that whole "translating riffs into the English language" thing.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd take that skill off my resume if I were you. Take some night classes or something.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what's wrong with that one?

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The film festival is nice, but I couldn't care less about the movie stars. I wish I could have made the Ghost In The Shell 2 midnight screening.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

but seriously, huck, don't you think the toronto-hate in this case is a little misplaced? like, fine, hate toronto for being smoggy or for being boring or rude or uptight or whatever you don't like... but hating toronto for having a film festival? come on...

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's the "Chunk chunk." Guitars don't really go "chunk chunk," except maybe for that part in "Creep" by Radiohead.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Huk is using the Canadian spelling for that riff.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

When did Pick-On-Toronto Day turn into Pick-On-Huck Day?

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Just translate the riff into French and we'll all be happy.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 10 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh look, I'm Huck, crying because nobody likes me, boo hoo hoo.

Le Chunque?

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

dingk dingk would be the translation in French.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My translation of translating riffs into the English language into keyboard synth riffs ain't what it use to be.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Dean Cain yesterday!
Woody Harrelson was in the head shop round the corner from my house!

...Zzz

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I always see people from Corner Gas.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, what a coincidence, I always pass gas on the corner!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Could you punch Woody in the balls for me if you see him there again?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the hell did woody do to you¿

okay... aside from "white mean can't jump"¿

dysøn (dyson), Friday, 10 September 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"white men can't jump" - that sould read.

dysøn (dyson), Friday, 10 September 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"should" fuck¡

dysøn (dyson), Friday, 10 September 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

white men should fuck?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

fucki

jones (actual), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

back to the matter at hand: how on god's green earth is warren beatty still a celebrity??

jones (actual), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but, doesn't this fest screen something like eight-thousand films or so? I can't think of another festival with as much breadth in their selection (or lack thereof).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 11 September 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Toronto:
You looked hott on E-Talk Daily this week. Especially all your slick restaurants and the segment with Mila Jovovovich in which she praised your green spaces and dog-friendliness. However, I wish all my friends would stop moving to you. Degrassi is still pretty good though.
Say Hi to Canadian Idol for me.
kthxbye,
Robyn

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 11 September 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

TIFF is probably second only to Cannes in terms of prestige/influence/premiers of Oscar caliber (TM) and wildly praised/over praised films. The one year I went, in 2000, featured the N.A. premieres of "Couching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "In the Mood for Love," among others, and the debut David Cronenberg's and Guy Maddin's excellent shorts.

Plus, given the number of American films made in Canada, it's even more appropriate that the film fest be so well-covered, no?

Also, the thing that impressed me so much about Toronto and the film fest is that about half of the people attending the 400 or so movies - despite its current international pull/cachet - are locals.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

But, it's like, I mean, you hear about movies winning an award at Sundance, Cannes, or even Telluride more than you hear about Toronto. Or maybe that's just in Canada, where it's bad marketing to associate your product with Toronto outside of Toronto.

Huk-L, Monday, 13 September 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Here in the UK they will show TIFF awards on movie posters - sometimes as the 1st or 2nd graphic.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

give it up, huck.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay.

Huk-L, Monday, 13 September 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
I went to the Toronto 2003 FF and had a grand time. I saw 35 films in ten days, and got to ask Guy Maddin a question. By far a more cineaste-friendly fest than NY. It's possible I'll do it again in September.

Too bad the gay bars seem as lame as Chelsea's.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

there are gay bars as lame as SPLASH BAR NY?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Pardon my hetroness here, but what makes a gay bar lame?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I was pondering that myself.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots of cologne, awful music and 50something men in tight shirts.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)
