Have earthquakes, volcanoes, flash floods and so forth brought any major sporting events to a halt?

Even a minor earthquake scoring 0.5 on the Richter scale could seriously disrupt a bar billiards competition, for example.

this is apparently an intellectual question, as it is not about tits.

This past weekend's Cubs-Marlins series (three baseball games) was cancelled due to the hurricane in Florida.

The World Series of 1989 between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's was postponed because of an earthquake, which caused structural damage to the Giants stadium.

did the earthquake happen during the game? and it had to be abandoned midway?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm most interested in those - but i guess people can predict earthquakes and things now so it's less likely for things to go ahead if there's a risk, i suppose.

The earthquake happened during the pre-game show in 1989. Jose Canseco made his wife pump gas that night.

IIRC, it happened a couple hours before the game. But people had already started arriving at the stadium.

There was this in Cleveland the other night. No word on whether or not Weird Al Yankovic sang the National Anthem.

The "Gnational League"? Terrible.

yay keep them coming! they all seem to be about baseball in US at the moment!

Not quite the same, but high winds forced the abandonment of Celtic v Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup a few years back, due to bits of Celtic Park falling off. This gave the Celtic players plenty of time to fall out with each other before the rearranged fixture gave Caley Thistle their famous 3-1 victory, but not before Rangers fans with a hitherto unknown sense of humour turned up for the intervening Old Firm game with hard hats on.

There was that football match where the pitch got hit by lightning and some players got electrocuted as well.

My co-workers are always downloading the video from that soccer match.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the host has a very low bandwidth?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Huh?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

why are they downloading it always?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Because they can never remember where it goes inside their hard-drive, so they just go back to the bookmarked website and play it again. When I say "always", I guess I mean "once a month".

I've seen U.S. Open matches delayed by tropical storms.

Blue Jays/Yankees game this summer got stopped in warm up due to a racoon blowing up itself and taking down the transformer station for downtown Toronto. It's natural and a disaster I suppose.

I remember some Kansas City Chiefs game a few years ago where it rained so hard in Arrowhead Stadium that the field flooded during the game.

Dave Winfield (of the Blue Jays) was maligned by the fans and the media for a variety of other reasons. In 1983, he accidentally beaned and killed a seagull between innings at a game in Toronto, after which he drew vitriolic criticism from Canadian fans and environmental groups.

There have been football matches in Africa where the pitch has been struck by lightning and people have been killed

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Fastnet yacht race in 1979 was hit by a storm. and some people killed.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god yes, I remember that one. It was all over the news
