So, I Would Like To Travel To Thailand

I've already done a fairly heavy amount of work on some basics that I'd like the trip (probably a year or so away, realistically) to have. Hit the beaches for a couple nights, spend at least 4 nights in Bangkok for temple hopping, shopping, and Muay Thai, probably heading up north to the old capital and Chiang Mai. So, what else should I consider doing? What am I missing in the big cities that isn't going to make a guide book?

also theres a vegetarian festival in Trang province (SW) which is fucking amazing: involves "possession" by ancestor spirits, body mutilation, LOUD crackers, water bombs and free food ever night at the temples. around november if i remember????

someone who is sitting in Bangkok as I type i am probably well placed to answer your questions.

if you are planning a long term stay then use thailand as a base to visit the other countries in the region as Thailand is determined to ruin itself before the end of the decade. Burma is great if its temples you want to see and if you can get down to the beaches they are amazing. Pop into Laos for your proper southeast Asian scenery. Vietnam and China are now easy to visit as loads of airlines now do budget tickets. Kao san road is a good place for visas even though it now has a starbucks and Mc donalds.

if you are determined to stay in Thailand don't bother with Samui it's full of embarassing drunk brits and hookers. Go to Krabi or if you want fewer crowds there is Khao Lak a bit further north which is, so far, not too crowded. If you are looking for nightlife, go elsewhere! the government is determined to stop everyone having fun and are now using the fuel shortage as an excuse to shut everything even earlier. Any more questions feel free to ask. And when you get here, read the nation not the bangkok post! I work for the Bangkok Post...it's crap.

Oh and the PM is a wanker!

so where in the region is good for nightlife?

whatever you do, if you go to Ko Tao (which is a great place to learn to dive) do not hop from rock to rock with bare feet.

If you go to the Thai boxing in Bangkok, literally cover yourself with mozzie repellant - it's teeming, I had about 20 bites on my legs from that one night.

A good, clean hostel in BK is Suk11 on Sukhumvit Soi 11, very clean and good breakfasts for about 7 quid a night. You can get dorm beds there for a lot cheaper. It's near the Nana Plaza train stop.

ride the train, it's ace and a great way to cool down.
