Are there any pictures around of this place yet? It sounds great. The nearest I ever got to underground exploration was finding a tunnel that led from my flat to the nearby laundry for some reason.

Has anyone in here seen underground Paris?

I've not been down myself, but I've heard rumours of wild goff parties down the catacombes.

there was a great article in salon some years ago about the crazy catacomb explorers. the most notorious of them had a nemesis in the form of this inspector, but they had this great mutual respect thing going on, so much that the explorer showed up at the inspector's retirement party! (or funeral, i forget)

I can't help wondering if this is a hoax. I hope not.

How do you build something like that, even underground, without anyone hearing or noticing what you're doing??

"There were two swastikas painted on the ceiling, but also celtic crosses and several stars of David, so we don't think it's extremists. Some sect or secret society, maybe. There are any number of possibilities."

I love it when spokesmen say "There are any numbe of possibilities".

I loved this story so much. I love the idea of unknown stuff going on beneath cities. I really want to join that society that explores the catacombs of London, but they're really secretive.

There the police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers

i like the idea of these gangsters from the paris underworld sitting in their underground lair/cinema watching double indemnity.

"There were bottles of whisky and other spirits behind a bar, tables and chairs, a pressure-cooker for making couscous," the spokesman said.

How does he know it was for making couscous?? I suspect the racist French police are assuming it's North Africans to blame again.

tunisians watching double indemnity in an underground club! awesome.

(why wasn't i invited?)
