I mean, really. What was so wrong with Thomas Jefferson on the current nickel? One thing that I can say is that he doesn't SCARE YOUNG CHILDREN like the moon-faced, space-eyed, glam-queen pictured above. Anytime a coin designer says "Lose the pony-tail and make the nose bigger," you may want to look for another coin designer.

(I do like the buffalo, tho'.)

man alive that is a large nostrel

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Jefferson portrait reminds me of Robocop when the front of his helmet is off. So, classic.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Were people really up in arms about the nickel? Is there a big reason for this change?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Bureaucrats be bored and listless. Apparently.

I'm wondering if that ying-yang background will be on the actual coin, or if that's just the artist's rendering of what the coin will look like.

And Tom sure looks like he's undergoing some G-Force there. Give me young red-headed Tom!

Robocop or Data. I can't decide.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I just noticed yesterday for the first time! that the back of a nickle had some weird indy 500 thing on it. i had no idea. i never look at nickles too closely. i was rolling change cuz we had a year's worth laying around. 120 bucks worth! And I ran out of quarter rolls too. must be another 50 bucks in quarters.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Robocop or Data. I can't decide"

You don't have to. As long as we agree it's some sort of robot.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, i'm sorry, it wasn't the indy 500. i think that's on a quarter. it was the Louisiana Purchase on the back of a nickle.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i support the return of Buffalo nickels, tho.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I gotta an American loonie though and I is happy bout it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't have to. As long as we agree it's some sort of robot.

It's like they've taken Jefferson off of the nickel and replaced him with his double from Disney's Hall of Presidents.

Speaking of which, this is a little too accurate for me.

Kerry's robot is going to be so cool.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

god I hate nickles, they are the most irritating coin. I hate them! bad size, bad thickness, they just pile up.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Wassup my nickel?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

why does the mint need to advertise?

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 17 September 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it just me or is that coin totally not what Jefferson looks like at all? I don't mind the changes, but for fucks sake, there are a good couple dozen portraits of the man available for reference.

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 17 September 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Err, I kinda like it.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Friday, 17 September 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like he just ate at fricken' McDonalds.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 17 September 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

moon-faced, space-eyed, glam-queen

How is this a bad thing again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Ned.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 17 September 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm waiting for Georgina Washington to shashay down a catwalk on a new dollar bill, shake her little tush on the catwalk, yeah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Gator Magoon? That's a brilliant name, wherever the heck it's from!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

moon-faced, space-eyed, glam-queen

How is this a bad thing again?

Well, suffice to say, they could've picked a better candidate if that's what they were going for.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If you squint you can make out the Trail of Tears in the second coin.... Been reading Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." Interesting that one of the reasons for the Louisiana Purchase was to have a place for Native Americans to go.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

First of all, that graphic looks like it's a commerative coin put out by the Franklin Mint, for only $9.99.

Second: Alex & Keith OTM. Why does the government spend millions of dollars on the country's most hated coin, next to the penny?

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

He looks like he's about to be a bukkake recipient.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Two backs: the first three-sided nickel.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to be suspicious of older folks who bitched about this sort of thing ("Dagnabbit! They done put THE MOON on the back of this half-dollar with The Catholic Boy on the other side..."), but now I'm beginning to see their point. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. What in the world does changing Jefferson's face accompolish? It's still a fucking nickel.

I do check the quarters that I'm given as change to see if I've missed a state, but since this nickel stuff start going on, I haven't bothered. Oooh, look. The white man shakes hands with the native. Nothing revisionist about THAT.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish they still called the nickel the half dime. those were the days.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just a special issue thing. After 2005, the nickel will go back to being the way it always was. Everybody relax.

That said, I think it's lovely, big nostril and all.

Tonight at ten (kenan), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And it's a hell of a lot better than the creepy disembodied hand thing from a few months ago:

Tonight at ten (kenan), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the "Keelboat" nickel, but I thought ol' Tom was better looking than this strangely jowled man.
