Albert Hammond, Jr. 'informally converted to Judaism' about 18 months ago so that Nick Valensi would not be the only Jew in the band." [He mentions that his 'informal conversion' opened a "secret world" for him and even helped him get laid(!). Jeez, Albert, would you share some details--lots of Jewish guys sitting in their dorm rooms on Saturday night would immediately join the Albert wing of Judaism if clued into it]. Actually, Hammond may be part Jewish by birth (our sources are working on it). As of the date of this entry, the band is touring to support their second CD, "Room on Fire." By the way, although we have no real information on Valensi's "Jewishness" beyond that mentioned in the Guardian piece, we do have one possible factoid about his last name. His father was born in Tunisia. His mother in France (her maiden name is Delberg). There was once a fairly large Jewish community in Tunisia. Most Tunisian Jews have gone to France, the United States, or Israel since 1950. Some Tunisian Jews were in the country "forever"--perhaps 2000 years. Some are Sephardic Jews--descendants of the Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal in the late 15th century. Valensi is a not uncommon name among Sephardic Jews. It comes adopting the name of the Spanish city, Valencia, as the family last name. As most people know, many last names-- "Jewish" or not Jewish, are from place names. (Added November 2003)
