Inspired by the Cult Heroes section on Football Focus, where they have just had Paolo Hewitt, Guigsy and Gruff Rhys on talking about Robin Friday (with footage accompanied by "The Man Don't Give a Fuck").

Who's the cult hero at your (or any other) club?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I love harald brattbakk.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot my own Celtic cult hero, Mr Anton Rogan.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 September 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

after watching that 'football and fascism' documentary recently, Matthias Sindelar.

zappi (joni), Saturday, 18 September 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Club: Neil Grayson
All-time: Ivan Campo, Claudio Gentile

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 18 September 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Club - Steven Gerrard
International - Gerry Taggart

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Saturday, 18 September 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Steffen Freund, Footballing Genius. Amazing how someone with so little skill could have inspired such a following.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaun Wright-motherfuckin'-Phillips.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Can Steven Gerrard fall into the category of cult hero since everyone's pretty much agreed he's a decent enough player? Or is that not generally an accepted truth at all?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

he's kinda a genius.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the status of cult hero precludes talent, so: David Howells.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

jimmy "eddie" mcgrory.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

397 goals in 378 games.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it precludes talent, but some sort of errant genius or underratedness, or general menko-ness would seem to be the default. I just don't see Gerrard in the "cult" footballers mould.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with you Ailsa, Gerrard is a footballer of world stature, so the word "cult" doesn't seem to apply, implying as it does a degree of obscurity; but I think the Kop would beg to differ, there's definitely a cult of Gerrard at LFC.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Cult hero at Vålerenga = Aki Riihilahti! He actually came back to Norway for the independent supporter club's 10th anniversary.

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 18 September 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Gary Mabbutt underrated enough to be a cult hero?

He is a hero, anyway.

the bellefox, Saturday, 18 September 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

As you say with Gerrard, Shaun Wright Phillips is just a great player. My personal Manchester City cult hero would have to be Tony Coleman, who - legend has it - used to go to the pub straight after the match with his coat over his muddy kit. Expresso 2222 is a great song, though.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Sasa Curcic. Claimed not to own a pair of football boots when he showed up to play for Aston Villa.

Angelo DiLivio!

Harold Jarman, a tremendous old winger at Bristol Rovers decades ago. He's still adored there.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 19 September 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

South Melbourne's finest free kick-bending left-winger-cum-armed getaway driver, Con Boutsianis!

Hayden (Pow, Pow, Pow) (haitch), Sunday, 19 September 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Brolley - mainly for the beard, but also the free kicks.

Adam Faithless (Adam Faithless), Sunday, 19 September 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

And for the name, surely, Adam?

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Monday, 20 September 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Frank Sinclair. He was barmy. Also Doug Rougvie, the only international footballer I have seen who was incapable of kicking the ball in a straight line.

Peter Watts (peterw), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, from my Inter-fandom, a 10% footballer with 200% commitment, Ivan Luis Zamorano. Especially for the "1+8" shirt.

Chic Charnley.

Classic beyond words, not least for being the British player with the most sendings-off in British leagues (17). Saw him hit the bar from the back of the centre circle in his own half once - "I just thought I'd have a pop."

My favourite Chic story is the samurai sword one. (Chic's had a couple of pints when some kids start having a go at him. He offers them outside with a time and a place. They accept, and when he gets there they have a samurai sword. Chic beats them up.)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I don't know. Terry Hurlock? Tam Forsyth? There are so many chancers to choose from. Andy Goram probably doesn't count.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Micky 'Mars Bars' Hazard. Genius for 20 inutes, then more confectionary was needed. He fell out with then Chelsea manager Bobbt Campbell one season in the late 80s then made a surprise return to the 1st team at home to Notts Forest. As the announcer called his name out ("Number 11 MICK-EY HA-ZAAAAAAARRRRRDD") the roar from the Shed and the West Stand was spine-tingling. He did a bloody lap of honour applauding the crowd BEFORE kick off. Then Campbell took him off at half-time.

**Frank Sinclair. He was barmy. Also Doug Rougvie..**

Looks like you were watching CFC in the 80's/early 90's too Pete. I agree about Dougie Rambo. The fact that someone as utterly useless as Sinclair has made a 10-year career in the professional game is inexplicable. from his first game I always thought he'd follow the likes of Gary Chivers, Keith Dublin, Keith Jones to Brighton/Watford/Brentford then Hayes Town/Stevenage/Non-league...

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Micky Hazard was wicked in that one season at Swindon, I think, in about 1993 when they got into the top flight.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

It was Frankie's lunatic surges upfield that appealed to me. There were a fair few Worthington Cup games that were only made bearable by these glorious affairs - he'd just stick his head down and charge. I saw him interviewed a few weeks after he'd joined Leicester and he was wearing this training bib covered in signatures. 'Why are you wearing that,' the interviewer asked. Frankie, shamefaced, replied: 'they give it to the worst player in training. I've had it for the last fortnight.'

he then proceeded to score own-goals in the last minute of two matches in a row. glorious.

Andy Myers: now there's a member of the Chivers/Dubin/Jones chamber of horrors.

cult heroes: i always wish i'd seen Joey Jones.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my, Andy Myers. Oh no. Now with Bradford.

I saw Joey Jones - if he could catch the opposition winger they knew about it alright. IF he could catch them.

Darren Wood. Do you remember him? Played nearly 100 games for us and possibly touched the ball in one of them.

I once saw us field a 'midfield' of Colin Pates, Keith Jones and Darren Wood while the likes of Hazard, Roy Wegerle, were in the reserves. Pat Nevin was on the bench.

Wait...PAT NEVIN. Fucking hell! He was fantastic.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Being a Wimbledon fan, pretty much all my favourites have to qualify. I wasn't a big fan of the obvious: Wise, Jones, Fashanu - but plenty of others had my hero worship. Glyn Hodges, Robbie Earle, Hermann Hreidarsson, Jason Euell, Wally Downes, Carlton fairweather, etc. etc.

I'd say my favourite, though, was Chris Perry. I don't know if he really counts as he's obviously a very capable, professional player who's been playing premiership football for a decade. But I was in tears when he left. What a man (and he recently came down to Kingsmeadow too. Geezer).

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Glyn Hodges! Sweet left-foot.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Wood was the pits. Watching him opened my young eyes to the fact that just because a footballer was a professional, this did not mean they were actually any good.

Nevin = God. I remember he got a standing ovation for scoring against us for Everton (admittedly, it was in the last minute and we were 2-0 up at the time).

Now, do you remember Dave Mitchell?

Peter Watts (peterw), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Alan Cork, especially with the beard.

Who was that little Wimbledon player touted as the new Dennis Wise who scored a cracker against Arsenal on his debut and was never seen again (early 90s)? he was a McSomething. What happened to him?

Peter Watts (peterw), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter : This is what I said about D.Mitchell a while back on this thread : Worst Professional Footballer you've ever seen play in real life

**Another nightmare has surfaced from CFC's last soujourn in Div 2 circa 89/90 : Dave Mitchell. This bearded, mulleted (think Barry Gibb)& quite old 'striker' was unearthed from some Dutch club and had apparently played a few games for Glasgow Rangers at one time. What can I say? It MUST have been a scam of some sort - this guy redefined the parameters of uselessness. He played about 4 games for us, touched the ball about twice in each, and mainly hung around offside or on the wing, seemingly trying to avoid the action. He had a shot in one game (against Walsall, IIRC) - from 15 yards he hit the ball like a toddler and forced the keeper to....do nothing really. It wouldn't have gone in - it wasn't going hard enough!**

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha. and didn't we win that walsall game 7-0?

btw, J mcnaught was nominated as a cult hero for one of them scottish clubs on Football Focus a couple of weeks ago.

Peter Watts (peterw), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The 7-0 was away. Durie scored 5. The home was 2-1 or 2-0, IIRC. The Walsall keeper, one Ron Green, was absolutely superhuman that day.

McNaught was awful too - which Scottish club was it?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

don't recall. a bad one, possibly St Mirren. didn't he die of alcohol poisoning? interestingly, nevin says mcnaught was the heart and soul of that 83/84 side and the dressing room was never the same after he left.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter W, that was Paul McGee (though I have to say I had to ask - I remember the name now I've been reminded of it, but I can't really remember much other than the hype). Needless to say he didn't become the new Dennis Wise.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a text from a friend of mine who was at White Hart Lane on the first day of the season and apparently Thimothee Atouba was taken to heart as a cult hero within minutes of being on the pitch. His screamer against Newcastle and generally making Stephen Carr look stupid cemented that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we pronounce his forename like that shampoo ingredient 'timotei' (no idea what it is), please?

Shouldn't it be pronounced 'Timotay'?

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Iain Hume's our countries next great hope. Which considering our country means it would be nice if he scores 5 goals over his international career.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(Chic's had a couple of pints when some kids start having a go at him. He offers them outside with a time and a place. They accept, and when he gets there they have a samurai sword. Chic beats them up.)

That's not strictly true, as the kids were kicking about in Ruchill Park with a samurai sword when Partick were training there. The face-off took place at the time, an impromptu thing rather than a pre-arranged fight. Still classic, though.

My other Celtic cult heroes of recent years have included Enrico Annoni, Owen Archdeacon and Dariusz Dziekanowski (who scored four goals in a European game and still ended up out on goal difference). And Johnny Doyle, though admittedly the general cult status accorded by Celtic fans was conferred after he'd electrocuted himself in the bath with his hairdrier.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose you're right about Chic, but it's better he way he tells it.

Other heroes:

Keith Wright
Kaiser Sauzee
The Porn Star

And, rather embarrasingly, Davie Cooper. One of the greatest footballers that ever lived. Even if he was a Hun. (See also Ted McMinn.)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Gino Padula. The jesus christ lookalike who plays at left back 4 QPR but all the argie players look like that.

azob, Monday, 20 September 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Doctor Khumalo, merely for his name. Doesn't he play MSL nowadays?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 20 September 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

MLS, Dom, and not for years. He was with the Columbus Crew, whose "Village People" crest is the most horrible emblem in the football world, in 1996 and 1997. Nifty on the ball, though, and a legitimate choice for that. If we're going by African names in MLS, though, I'll take Junior Agogo, Dipsy Selowane, Ubusuku Abukusumo, or Tico Tico Buacuane over the Doctor.

None, however, can touch Thor Lee, despite his scant two appearances for DC United.

Another piece of the Sasa Curcic legend: everyone knows the story of Maradona beating the keeper and then going back around him again to score. I saw Sasa do this once, except after he paused to let a defender back in the play to dribble around him again, he missed the resulting sitter.

The Porn Star

Ooh, remind me who that was again please. I'm guessing a Hibs connection somewhere by the rest of your list, but I thought it was someone who played for Raith. Or am I barking up the totally wrong tree? (I'm too frightened to google for Hibs porn star).

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Or is it that guy that showed why Brazilians are such great lovers?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Porn Star was Dirk Lehmann, who we signed from Fulham in our biggest-ever deal.

The only position he didn't play in was goalkeeper, I think. Looked good on paper, unfortunately we played on grass. < badum-tish > His first dozen games were brilliant (including a bicycle kick that was one of the best goals I've ever witnessed) but over the piece I suppose he could have done better.

Nicknamed The Porn Star because we signed him at the same time as Boogie Nights came out, and his name was Dirk. I remember Chick Young asking him about it in his first interview after signing (outside at the City Cafe, I think) and he made some crap joke about no complaints BUT THEN LOOKED INTO THE CAMERA TO SEDUCE ALL THE LADIES WATCHING. Classic.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, that's not who I thought you meant. Wasn't there some guy that signed for Raith or someone who had actually been a porn star?

one year passes...
Vic Kasule!!!
Responsible for accies coming from 2 goals behind to beat Airdrie in our local derby match. Possibly the greatest performance from a player i've ever seen.
Reason he never made it? He was a notorious pisshead.
So many stories about him. The best one was i think at SHrewsbury (after leaving hamilton) he took a piss in the boardroom and stole a directors car and crashed it.

He was also a Ugandan prince.
Any shrewsbury fans on ilx?

Also as i said on another thread in reply to DR C Worst Professional Footballer you've ever seen play in real life
John "Wurzel" McNaught.
John Brogan is the best player for many Accies fans.

Jose Quitongo is the most recent one i'd say.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Andy Reid. Fattest player in the Premiership?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 May 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Jose Quitongo once had to go off the pitch during a match because he had to go and have a shite and it took him ages and everyone had to wait until he came back out before they could carry on with the match. His next match saw the opposition fans throwing toilet rolls at him.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 11 May 2006 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I said Lombardo, upthread. He was great.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 11 May 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

In a cup game against rangers jose ran from the halfway line beating about 6 players and hit the post. If he could actually kick a ball he would've been a world beater.

He is in the Anogolan world cup squad. He's 31 now So i don't know how effective he will be but it will sure be a treat watching such a great player like him at the world cup.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Jamie Fairlie was a great player who was about to be signed by Alex Ferguson for Aberdeen in 1981 for £300,000 and he broke his leg. I saw him late in his career and he was still class.
Gerry McCabe should've been at a top club too.
Colin Harris could've graced any team in the premier too if he wasn't so fucking lazy.

George McCluskey is prob my fave Accies player ever. He certainly scored the best goal i've ever seen, in a pre season friendly in about 1991 against Lutown Town.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Personally, I was excited (in a non-sexual way) to see Lee Sharpe turn out last week for that charidee pro-celebridee England v Germany match. And he scored and did a brief Sharpey shuffle. He broke through as part of the original Fergie's Fledglings in the pretty poor United team of 88/89. They were supposed to be the second coming of the Busby Babes, but only Sharpe really made the grade (and perhaps Mark Robins at a push). At the start of the 90s he was amazing - he used to run down the left wing with the ball faster than anyone else could run without it - and tipped for the top with England. Then he just kind of disappeared for a while - I think he had a couple of mysterious 'injuries' that kept him out for months at a time - and when he came back Ryan Giggs had taken his place, not just on the wing, but also as the teenage sensation to watch. He was still a good player when he left United (in 96?), but just seemed to fade away. I know he went to Leeds, but I can't remember anything he did there. I've got a feeling he went to Italy for a bit. I think he was at Bradford when they were in the Premiership, but I don't remember him actually playing in the first team. He was only about 25 when he left United, but his career seemed to end then.

I loved Sharpey. Seeing him destroy Mel Sterland in the 1992 League Cup semi-final was painful and joyful - it should have been stopped as unfair.

He left for Leeds with Wilkinson convinced he was the man for England on the left (this left sided problem has been going on for a while) and then four games later, Wilko was sacked, and his face never fitted with Goerge Graham.
Random fact - his autobiog was ghosted by David Conn.
