here is where we should discuss our hopes, dreams, and fears concerning the upcoming bush v. kerry and cheney v. edwards debates. i personally fear that kerry could come across as condescending to bush (what with the iq gap and all) and arrogant, reminiscent of gore 2000. and i can't conceal my lack of shock about bush rejecting the town hall format. his biggest fear should be an unexpected and unprepared for question. anyone else??

his biggest fear is standing next to Kerry for more than two seconds

Am not!
Are too!

I was just thinking last night, what with Bush's reluctance to debate in general, that the debates should be MANDATORY, as important a part of the process as the primaries. Why not, right?

Duplicate thread. See A thread for the Kerry / Bush debates

bush will not stray from his script, talk about 'freedom', 'ownership society', other meaningless stock phrases. he will seem friendly.

kerry will talk about policy and sound shrill and wonkish.

based on the miniscule expectations of his speaking ability, bush will be declared the winner by the media, which will use phrases like 'resolute' and 'determined'.

almost no one's minds will be changed.

Lord. My deepest fear is that the next presidential debates will look like every other such debates for the past 30 years. In which case, they will be about how well each candidate can manipulate his surface appeal and project a 'presidential image'.

My advice is to go do some grassroots political organizing work like phone banking or canvassing, to offset some small portion of the damage done by television to the democratic process.

OTM, though i sure as hell hope you're proved wrong somehow.

I hope the moderator says, "Quit giving those fucking talking-point answers about shit I didn't ask, and answer the goddamned question, ya prick." That would be so awesome.

yes, Jim Lehrer is known for his testiness.

Wait, I thought the middle debate was town hall? Is it not?

i don't think so, but i could be wrong. i will try to find out for sure.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh, it would be even better if Bubba McDaniels told him to answer the fucking question.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Bush pulled out of the town hall debate, and I guess they changed the format and he agreed to do it again.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

After hearing Kerry's speech yesterday/today I'm convinced that the debates will go a lot better for Kerry than the "OMG don't underestimate Bush's covert ninja debating skills" chorus believes. Pleasant Plains' pictures make a great point (assuming he's being sarcastic); Bush's supposedly good showing in the 2000 debates was due only to a favorable dichotomy of image with Gore that he won't be able to establish with Kerry. Gore was uptight and overeager, so bush could just turn on the frat-guy-chilling-on-the-couch thing, sit back and let Gore make a fool of himself. I don't think that will be possible with kerry.

has anyone read the rules for the debates? some of them are laughable. they have agreed that there will be no cutaway shots of either while his opponent speaks, that they will not be allowed to stand on risers to appear taller, and that they are both allowed to use their own makeup artists. apparently the agreed upon rules list is 36 pgs. long.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

also no pretzels in Bush's green room.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

that they will not be allowed to stand on risers to appear taller

this is cool because Kerry is taller than Bush and that seems to matter to some people.
