rio ferdinand's return...

i and other man yoo fans are getting very excited about the return of a player who hasn't really played that well for us. he had a disappointing first season, in which o'shea neville and silvestre were excellent, and more consistent than he was. he played a handful of excellent games just prior to his ban. since then, o'shea and silvestre's form has collapsed, and rio's stock has steadily accumulated - to the point where everyone has forgotten that we all once thought that he had failed to live up to the mammoth transfer fee.

i give him his due - excellent for the hammers and leeds, stellar World Cup in 2002. at the top of his game, he is the best in the premiership, probably. he may well come back and respond with a great season - but he hasn't had a run of consistently good football in many moons.

what do you expect from rio's return to man yoo and international duty?

DeFoe is gonna run rings around him on Saturday.

I think it'll take a while for him to get going, it's kinda uncertain who he'll be paired with.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

silvestre, i suspect.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that new bloke Hientze? Won't silvestre have to play at right back?

I keep channeling lawrenson, "Man U are in a right mess at the moment gary"

My Manyoo supporting friends tell me he has been practicing with the team all along, is reported to be in good physical shape, so I have to wonder where is head is and whether he actually was doing any kind of enhancing drugs. If he was, what sort of shape is he in now? My inclination is to think he'll come out on fire and provided he doesn't screw up badly in the first 30-odd minutes he'll settle down to consistancy. If he does choke though, it'll take a while to get him steady.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Kilian, we should have a drink sometime.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

He's had a fair start, partnered with Silvestre, who scored the opening goal. Heinze at right back.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

heinze at left back, no? brown at right-back, though g.neville will steal that place when he returns - o'shea in midfield tonight.

adam, will you be in ireland sometime soon?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

no

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

bah

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

you must go to him

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, apologies, Heinze at left back indeed. Why is Phil Neville not getting a place at all, even with all the recent absences?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 September 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Saha any good?

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 20 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Not even on the bench, as far as I recall. (Liverpool equalised, possibly an O'Shea og)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I found this an interesting article.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 20 September 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

2-1 final score. ferdinand solid, but silvestre rejuvenated. united looked good. i still think they'll come third, but maybe this will be the beginning of a decent run of form.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 20 September 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

god Liverpool looked back to the depressing lack of creativity stage again, bitterly disappointing after last week's performance against Monaco.

plus side Xabi Alonso looks quite good. defence is awful, centrally. Is Sami really finished?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 20 September 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

sensible article linked by boyle.

liverpool's defending of set-pieces and crosses was awful. kewell also looked extremely poor. i don't think pool's strikeforce will get many goals either.

causes for concern for united: ferguson playing o'shea in midfield is silly, scholes has been very quiet indeed.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 20 September 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Kewell was dire except for 5 minutes second half.

I think Cisse is still settling maybe.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 20 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well he was always good at Fulham!!
I have never seen anyone eat an energy bar during a game. Another drug test Rio perhaps?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That first half was like watching United in the treble season, they just rolled right over Liverpool, overran them completely. Every time anyone got the ball to Ronaldo and sent him haring up the pitch you just felt something was going to *happen*. Also, Brown's cheeky turn on the right, something's clearly rubbing off on him because I found myself just thinking "hang on, did WES BROWN really just do that?"

The second half was like watching United over the past couple of seasons, letting themselves get pinned back, or just hammered on the break. Ferdinand put in a decent enough display but not really man of the match worthy.

Liverpool looked like they were dropping like flies. I'm surprised Garcia carried on through the match. Any idea how bad Gerrard's injury is?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Six weeks out, according to the ehadline of the paper opposite me on the train this morning. It's a metatarsal injury of some sort.

I really enjoyed the match.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

bugger bugger bugger, i've just put him in my fantasy team as well, grrrrrrrrrr.

rio ferdinand's return to...london?

it's entremely unlikely, of course. but he should get a decent contract out of it.

is he worth it? sort of.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
From your Super Soaraway:

'England star Rio Ferdinand has played a series of hilarious 'Gotcha' pranks on his World Cup team-mates for a new TV show.

'The Manchester United ace winds up crocked striker Wayne Rooney - who is told his dog has been KILLED. Roo's fiancée Coleen McLoughlin plays along with the trick - before Rio bursts in to tell him it's a joke.'

Before we go any further with this, we feel we should let you know that Rio apparently 'spent months planning the elaborate stunts'.

To which Mediawatch's first response was 'surely telling someone their dog's dead isn't an elaborate stunt. It's not a trick, a joke or a gotcha either - it's just a lie'.

But then, we would pay good money to see this:

'In another Candid Camera-style prank, fiery full-back Gary Neville's anger boils over when he is confronted by bogus traffic cops. Man Utd team-mate Ryan Giggs joins in on the gag as Gary is collared in the car park underneath his Manchester flat.

'He fiercely protests his innocence, then Rio steps in with a camera crew to a tirade of abuse from his furious club colleague.'

Incidentally, if you're a fan of Rio's work, you'll be pleased to know that he also has a 'film in the pipeline' (we don't know any more than that, but given Rio's past memory lapses we're expecting it to be along the lines of Memento) - and that three TV channels are 'bidding for the rights to a Rap Idol show - featuring Premiership footballers.'
