chips (crisps) on sandwiches: c/d

i love the idea of oil & vinegar as a sandwich condiment, but far too often i just end up with oily, vinegary, soggy bread.

a good vinegary potato chip, on the other hand, will provide all the salt, grease, and tang you need, while keeping the integrity of the sandwich hierarchy intact. bread-flavored bread, meat-flavored meat, everything one layer at a time. it's perfect, sez i. what sez you?

A tunafish sandwich is not a tunafish sandwich unless it's crammed with Ruffles. Classic.

andy, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i enjoy adding a layer of doritos to a plain peanut butter sandwich. crunchy and yummy.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

At Subway or Quizno's or your local deli, ask for vinegar at the end "on the veggies". It shouldn't make your bread too soggy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i just had one with bbq chips. wonderful, and a great way to mask fishiness.

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Peanut butter and artificial nacho cheese flavor? You must be joking.

Sometimes I put french fries inside my hamburger.

Tonight at ten (kenan), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Emily has STOMACH OF STEEL. You should hear the BUCKET story.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to go to Der Weinderschnitzel and put fries inside my chili-cheese dog.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I like dipping plain tortilla chips in creamy peanut butter, fwiw.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

classic, except when you're drunk and forget to chew and choke on random chips

kephm, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic - esp. when the chips are chili-flavor Fritos.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Total classic. It is the ultimate hangover cure. Once you get it down and keep it down, salvation is in sight.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My veggie sandwich of two days ago:

thick as fuck seven-grain wheat bread
shit ton of garlic mayo
yellow tomato
red onion
spinach leaves
cucumber slice
roasted red pepper
provolone cheese
salt & pepper kettle chips
onion sprouts

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have fond memories of the Polish Boy- deep fried polish sausage on a bun, then topped with french fries, cole slaw and hot sauce.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheap, bad, thinly sliced white bread with a thin scraping of butter and salt&vinegar crisps together make an exquisite sandwich.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

For the week after Christmas, cold turkey sandwiches are rendered 100 times more edible by adding crisps.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I just ated a new kinb of snadwich:

crumpet
butter
cucumber slice
big slice of ham all folded up
slice of cheese
jalapeno chillies

very nice actually.

its a school lunch classic downunder. i buttered roll, i packet chips. o i want one now.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow I have never put chips (or hot chips for that matter) in a sanger. I mean I knew people did... but not me. I like the idea of plain corn chips in a sanger tho - not flavoured ones just plain ones. With maybe some Philly cream cheese, and some sweet chili sauce or pesto or something.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone ever put sandwiches on chips (crisps)?!?!?!??!?!?!

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Chip (as in chipped, fried potato) sandwiches are TEH BOLLOX, either with loads of salt and vinegar (and butter which melts um yum goodness because of the hotness of the chips) or else with soy sauce. Chips with soy sauce rule.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

After a night on the pop, a pita bread filled with chips from yr local kebab shop is a dead effective hangover preventer. Also, unlike an actual kebab, it doesn't involve playing Russian Roulette with yr guts.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never tried chips with say sauce, buy soy sauce is awesome with everything so I'll have to try that. I love a good chip buttie though, but I normally go for salt, vinegar and brown sauce, with the lovely melted butter sweetness.

Craig Gilchrist, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I love cheap white bread with mayo, grated red leicester & bacon wheat crunchies. nummy!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I am extremely hungry for a white bread salt n vinegar crisp sandwich now. Extremely.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too!! I am digging white bread sammiches the most at the moment. Ooh & brie & mexican grill doritos. (if they are the veggie ones)

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i love a subway sandwich with cheese, tomato, loads of pickles and salt crisps. kids were actually laughing at the amount of pickles i asked for, when i got one the other day, but i just sneered at them, and they ran away. ha.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa. Flashback to sitting in circles of 10 or so in the hall at junior school: etiquette demanded that everyone pass around their pack of crisps so that all in the circle could partake of a bunch of different flavours. Social ostracism ensued if your mum had boughtown-brand ready-salted. A good thing to do was to take a couple of crisps from each packet and shove them in your second sandwich (the first having been scoffed at breaktime) and enjoy the wonderful melange of prawn cocktail, cheese'n'onion, roast beef etc. Monster Munch were particularly favoured for the increased textural interest they brought.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Good idea for a fap perhaps??

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Monster Munch were the smelliest fucking crisps ever. Munchers' stinky breath after lunch during school is a memory I can do without.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell yes. FAC(rispy)S(andwich)?

xpost oh no my friend, you surely have not witnessed the awesome smelliness of...SCAMPI NIK NAKS.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Cheesy Wotsits. Rotten feet in a packet.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

tuna sandwiches with cucumber eaten with a packet of walkers salt and vinegar crisps have considerably improved my quality of life.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I want one now. Does a crusty roll spread with Austrian smoked cheese, with a layer of Thai Bites count? I am uncertain of the crispiness of this snack, as they proudly state 'baked not fried' on the packaging.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

one slice of warburtons toastie folded around Seabrooks Prawn Cocktail Crisps and Brie.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There used to be crisps here called Ma Reilly's. One flavour only - gunk from under a hobo's toenails flavour. The bang off them was unmerciful.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Jalr'mai is a man of taste and distinction.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I have barbecue hula hoops ready for a sammich that I am hoping the food van has. *crosses fingers*

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If God ate snacks, he would have a cheese and onion crisp sandwich.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh yeah, aslong as the cheese & onion crisps do not contain nasty animal rennet!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Chip butties.

Nuff said.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG Mei, I can't believe that have been forgotten about!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The ever-lovely Robster mentioned the hangover-preventing qualities of chip-filled pittas!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I love a good chip buttie though, but I normally go for salt, vinegar and brown sauce, with the lovely melted butter sweetness.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

adding bacon flavour crisps to cheese sandwiches is teh awesome (and actually vegetarian!!)

I want to hear the bucket story!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Bacon flavour crisps + cream cheese + white sliced = taste sensation

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yay ricardo!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't ever had a chip buttie. considering my love for chips as well as bread, i don't know why. someone remind me to order one when we're in a pub that sells them, ok?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell me the name of a pub that sells chip butties and I will rent the flat above.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Liz (& Robster). Smokey bacon in with cheese sammiches do indeed rule!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I just had a goats cheese salad baguette and Walkers salt n vinegar. But I could not quite bring myself to put the crisps IN the baguette, under the beady eyes of everyone else in the canteen. Also, I'm not convinced it can work as well with baguettes. Or salad.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The worst thing about crisp sandwiches is getting stabbed in the roof of the mouth by an errant crisp shard.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the danger that makes it exciting.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Your reckless abandon has left me breathless.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Or when it goes under the gum. ouch!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Its like an intravenous salt injection.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Or when you take your bra off and half of Walkers falls out.

Ew.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha! *drools-salty injection*
x-post
hahahaha!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

bonus!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

like getting a cool toy in a kinder surprise.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so the crusty roll with Austrian smoked processed cheese and a layer of Thai Bites was nice, although kind of wafer-crunchy rather than gum-shredding splintery. Mmmm crisps in sandwiches.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

AND crisps as well!

xpost

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like what this thread has become.

I was having a rubbish day at work earlier and took to pushing hula-hoops into my tuna sandwich to cheer myself up.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw sweetpea, do you feel better now?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

More or less. I think salt & vinegar hula hoops would've worked better.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I ended up having a brie & cranberry (scraped that out though) baguette, so the hula hoops were eaten at the same time, but not actually inside the sanger!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

So you had an empty baguette with crisps on the side?

robster (robster), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Cranberry + crisps = equally marvellous.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Pink means she scraped out the cranberry and had a brie baguette? I don't like that combo either.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was being facetious (sorry). Brie and cranberry sounds nice but I would prefer to eat a good brie on its own. With a nice glass of wine. ahh... *eyes glaze over*

robster (robster), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm sounds perfect robster, but alas I only managed a glass of water with it! It had some lettuce in there aswell which was a bit 'meh'!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh wine. Wine and crisps and cheese. Heaven!

Maybe I will get a bottle of Tescos plonk and some Crunchy Sticks if the flat-viweing goes well tonight...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Lettuce in shop-bought sandwiches is the devil's work. The stuff can barely survive in there for the time it takes to eat.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh, good luck with the flat-viewing Arch.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds lubberly arch, good luck with tonight!!
I didn't mention that the inside of the baguette was a bit soggy & I scraped out the whole pack of butter that was in there!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

My baguette was ok - lovely goats cheese but typical limp salad. No butter at all which is better than too much, but I wouldn't have minded a scraping.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, we should have swaped, I don't ever have butter!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)
