My brother asked me a great hocket trivia question the other day: What NHL player scored 500 goals and 500 assists, had 2000 penalty minutes, and played for the Hartford Whalers? It's a suprisingly difficult question.

Anyway, this question got me pining for the days of the Whalers, and the Winnipeg Jets, and the Quebec Nordiques -- the great hockey glory of the 1980's and my youth. And so, let's reminisce!

Whoever answers the trivia question correctly gets the Dale Hawerchuck Memorial Trophy!

Please include discussion of the California Seals and Atlanta Flames.

or was it the Oakland Seals? Before my day, anyway.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

without checking, i'ma say gordie howe.

it was the california golden seals. although with the current situation, we could talk about a whole bunch of clubs... :(

cleveland barons to thread!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

shit, you might be right. although howe got a lot more than those stats. but that wasn't the player I was thinking of. it was a player from the 80's. my apologies if he did indeed play for the whalers. i don't think he did -- but his son did (Mark).

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the nordiques.

Heh, before too long, won't that be all of them?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm particulary nostalgic for when Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver were all in the Smythe division. It's amazing how much the Alberta teams dominated those years (as in 6 Stanley Cups and many other titles).

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

xx post. Don't be so pessimistic. Hockey will return. Or Canadians will set fire to the world!

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG, TAO, those were also the days when I was most into hockey. I still kind of think in those terms so sometimes it's confusing to watch now. Oddly a lot of the players from then still seem to be playing. Isn't Yzerman still around, for example?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yzerman will likely retire do the current labour lockcout and the fact that he broke his orbital bone (the bone that surrounds the eye) in last year's playoff loss to the Calgary Flames.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love a Nordiques jersey, I lurved them.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

OH YEAH THE MOTHERFUCKING MINNESOTA NORTH STARS!!!

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i would dearly like a north stars jesrsey.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

what the hell is a 'Wild' (as in the current Minnesota Wild)

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

well then it must be ronnie francis, although i'm surprised at that many penalty minutes.

stevie y was resigned by the wings, for whatever that's worth. is he even fit to play? i haven't heard anything about him since that puck hit him...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, wtf is up with that? That name is worse than the Nashville Predators.

x-post

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i punch myself for not going to see les nordiques nor les jets (at home) when i had a chance...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the wild is a terrible name. but they have nice unis!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

As a resident of St. Paul I have to inform everyone that EVERY SINGLE PUN YOU COULD THINK OF RELATED TO THE WORD "WILD" HAS BEEN DONE TO DEATH HERE.

Also, who the fuck follows hockey in Dallas?

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

hey nate didja go to any world cup games?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Was there a constellation game for the World Cup between the Czechs and Yankees?

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha. i wrote constellation, not consolation.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

There was no consolation game in the World Cup

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you never told me if ron francis was the answer, o tao.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

no the answer is ron francis. a good guess, though. a player who is perhaps more obscure.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

a hint and a qualification: this player also played for Red Wings and Quebec NOrdiques.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Pat Verbeek?
But he didn't play for Quebec...

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

shit. a stasny?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Then my brother is a fucking liar. But: excellent job!

A very underrated player, indeed.

Great Whalers of the 80's -- Verbeek, Dineen, Ferraro and the guy who used to be the centre for the Canucks before Morisson. Can you think of any more?

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I think he plays for the Blue Jackets. (not Verbeek, he's retired)

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this any good NHL message boards out there?

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ulf samuelsson; gord wesley (maybe not the 80s); mike liut

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate anyone who ever played for the rangers; thus, i hate pat verbeek

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

plus he looks like a rat

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(no offense kenny linseman)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

mike liut -- genius choice. he sort of captures everything that was the getting elimanated by the Canadiens in the first-round tradtion of Hartford.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Where do I send my address to receive my trophy?

One of the Whalers I remember is Peter Sidorkiewicz, a goalie. For more rosters and stats you should check out http://www.hockeydb.com. They have everything.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

THERE SHE BLOWS!

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

andrew cassels?

Symplistic (shmuel), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

RON TUGNUTT

perhaps the greatest backup goalie of all time, prone to doing shit like having 70 saves in a playoff game when the top goalie is hurt.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

OK Stan, what country do you live in?

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

shanny has 500 goals? c'mon, he sucks.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Vancouver is great a putting second to third centres on the top line and making them turn into a GENIUS! As in: Cassels, Morisson, maybe Cooke one day.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

am i wrong about shanny sucking though? c'mon. he's the kind of guy who gets points when yzerman/lindstrom/etc do all the work. and somehow he's always in a slump come playoff time.

haha canucks rule!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What are doing tonight, Symplistic? I might be going to the Van Film Fest and seeing a movie called 'The Loch Ness Incident.'

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, francis probably won the byng at least once. i just couldn't think of any other whalers with those numbers.

The Canucks are indeed ruleworthy. But not in the 80's.

TOP SCORERS: Tony Tanti, Petri Striko, Jim Sandlack.

When can;t get a player with 70 points in the 80's you know yr in trouble. (But don't mess with the HOUSE) He's owns a harware store in Sarnia, Ontario.

i too am a fan of the north stars, hell, they were even featured in one of my favorite childhood movies, "ice castles". [i grew up a competitive figure skater, so that would make perfect sense]

one of these days im going to play for this team.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 25 September 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want to state one thing that could've changed the Whalers fortunes were they not run like a fucking take-out joint & owned by a punk ass money-leeching shineheaded shysty bitch.

THEY DRAFTED CHRIS PRONGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone else mention Geoff Sanderson as a former Whaler of note? Also, John Cullen (cough), Zarley Zalapski (cough cough). Sean Burke was a Whaler for a while (w0000), as was PAUL COFFEY (ha ha ha ha ha he didn't want to go BUT TOUGH SHIT PAUL).

The Nordiques, prior to Coloradoville, had a line of (I swear to god) Owen Nolan, Joe Sakic, and Mats Sundin. And Mike Ricci was their 2nd line center. Sweet crap that's sexy.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 25 September 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

zarley zalapski sucked. i should know--i'm the proud owner of a penguin #33 zalapski sweater.
