I have 200 quid to spend on DVD films. Given that my collection includes the following, what would you recommend to me:

Rosemary's Baby
Love Story
Poor Cow
If
In the Mood for Love
My Beautiful Lauderette
Prick up Your Ears
Requiem for a Dream
East is East

Asshoppers and funnymen need not reply.

Mystery Men.
Time After Time.

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I just had a horrible moment there, when the Greatest Hits of Cyndi Lauper appeared on the screen.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, I didn't know you were one of that lot. I'm bloody impressed (and jealous).

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

DVDs and world cinema

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

That's so lazy, there are only six posts with a link to stuff written by people I don't know or *trust*. Name me a film, man! I have just bought Mystery Men at a knock-down price (which worries me).

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

* Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
* Zoolander
* Ikiru

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Breakfast at Tiffany's
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Battle Royale
Shaun of the Dead

By which I mean these are the next ones I am going to obtain.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

* Asoka

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought Mystery Men for £2.97. That is the joy.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Mystery Men was awful. You are all fools.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a great film! Kel from Kenan and Kel is in it for starters.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 September 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to get Shaun of the Dead when everyone else has paid the production costs and it starts to retail for less than a tenner. Zoolander is monumental.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I must get Zoolander.

As I was saying, during Mystery Men last night, the thing I like most about Ben Stiller is that he shouldn't be funny. But he is.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 26 September 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That's it though. You're constantly fighting against an underlying urge to be irritated by him and his strangely thick and spikey hair. He and Owen Wilson kill me and I hate myself for it.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

oh I put the link bcz its a variant on this thread and if anyone cared to answer as it didn't get much when I asked.

What about Insatiable? Don't you like that one?

Perverted Pete, Sunday, 26 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't seen many of the films on your list, but I would say you would probably like to have some Mike Leighs. Secrets and Lies and Life is Sweet especially.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 26 September 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Pather Panchali

Comme personne d'autre que William (common_person), Sunday, 26 September 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Random 10: Random Films for Comment - Week 7 (with yet another bonus ten for your enjoyment)

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 26 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Cathy, I love Mike Leigh films and have most of video. Life is Sweet was a real eye opener for me in terms of appreciating film as more than something to watch to pass the time. As was Naked. It just blew me away.

I had a look at ILF earlier before I opened this thread, just in case I would find all my inspiration there. It seemed too much like hard work though and I'm a lazy cow.

Ally C, please come to Dublin. That would be amazing. I am back from Paris on 5th and off to Athens on 13th. So weekend 5th - 7th best for me.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The Street of Shame
Farewell My Concubine

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Almodovar is a great suggestion. This is what I need: people to jog my memory for things I've heard/read are fantastic.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Look at the Freaky Trigger Top 100 Films ever run-down, now at about #24! Also 'Rikyu' (which I wrote about on FT a month or so ago) is the most gorgeous film I have ever seen. Don't know if it's available on DVD or not.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

john woos "the killer". its liek a gay "in the mood for love", with guns.

:| (....), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ever since "Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown", Almodóvar hasn't done a film that wasn't good in one way or another (and most of his films before "Women..." are worth the watch as well, though they're often less focused than his more recent work). "Tie Me Up!" is somewhat underrated, but personally I think it's maybe his best.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't seen it but have just read about it and it sounds fantastic. The title carries it half the distance in any case!

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

random list from ME:

Together (Lara, this is the greatest film ever made, you must watch it.)
Brazil
Nosferatu
Lost Highway

er er that's all I can think of.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, actual great movies for you to get...

The Warriors
Gregory's Girl
American Movie (only if you have multi-region but practically the biggest must on any list)
Annie Hall
The Graduate

Obvious, I suppose. I am still considering Dublin.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the look of Don't Look Now and Together. It's a relief that the DV is still talking to me!

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ally c is half insane.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Gregory's Girl is one of those films that I've never seen, which I suspect everyone may be lying about. It doesn't read-up very well. Is it really that good?

Half insane? Does that mean he's been half miracle cured?

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ALMODOVAR SUCKS

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

G's G is better than you could possibly imagine.

ADAM HE SO DOES

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconded on Gregory's Girl. One of the few occasions Cook is totally and utterly OTM.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't go hating on the Forsyth.

the bobfox, Monday, 27 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

RIO BRAVO <-- IS GREAT!

{Sand in the [vaseline} on the lens] (x Jeremy), Monday, 27 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it a coincidence that we both said

RIO BRAVO?

the bossfox, Monday, 27 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

There are no coincidences, only GOOD WESTERNS

(and we're Joyeans; hence, 'no')

{Sand in the [vaseline} on the lens] (x Jeremy), Monday, 27 September 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Almodovar doesn't suck. You're obviously one of those good-looking-but-dumb gentlemen, Jed :)

"The Law of Desire" and "Matador" are my favourite Almodovars.
I assume someone's already said "Spirited Away"?
"Belle Epoque" is an underrated classic; "Manhattan" is lovely. "The Snapper" is a gorgeous film.

How's that?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Lara, I think you'll love Amelie

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 27 September 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

eww amelie eww

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 27 September 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I read every one of those as "RJG", instead of "RIO".

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 September 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i just purchased the second season of curb your enthusiasm on dvd. it was fairly cheap, about $25. and though it is not a movie, it is a must have i think.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 27 September 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, RJG -- Bravo!

the bellefox, Monday, 27 September 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

: )

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinefox in posting frenzy! U2 are pants and I hate Westerns (too dusty and suede-ey). Are you suggesting a Dylan DVD or am I missing something?

Belle Epoque is already in the collection and is stunning. I liked the look of Amelie but it's not something I'd like to own. I really wouldn't watch it again.

This afternoon, whilst off work ailing, I watched the Magdalene Sisters. Way to bore yourself rigid; I almost went for a walk!

Lara (Lara), Monday, 27 September 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Gregory's Girl 2 (or Gregory's 2 Girls) crap?

Lara (Lara), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't Look Back, (is), like Dylan in the movies

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Don't Look Back" is good, but I don't think it's the kind of movie you'd want to watch more than once or twice. Speaking of Dylan in film, I enjoyed "Masked & Anonymous" but everyone else seemed to hate it, so YMMV.

Some random suggestions:
Fallen Angels (wong kar-wai)
The Lady Eve or Palm Beach Story (preston sturges)
L'Avventura (antonioni)
Goodbye South, Goodbye (hou hsiao-hsien)
The Shop Around the Corner (ernst lubitsch)
Breathless or Band of Outsiders or Contempt (godard)

o. nate (onate), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

alphaville
morvern callar
big lebowski
my wrongs # (the chris morris film)
city of women
toby dammit
sex & lucia
how to get ahead in advertising
the limey

these are more favorites of mine that i imagine everyone would like... but i like several of
the films that you had too, so there is probably some common ground.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Other people's ideas that are good: Zoolander, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Together, Brazil, Spirited Away

My ideas that are better: (okay not really): To Live, Dead Man, The Princess Bride, Office Space, Sanjuro.

Of course you haven't seen Gregory's Girl: it is you.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

die hards

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I can lend you Together, Brazil, Spirited Away, Dead Man, The Princess Bride or Sanjuro if you want. Or is it a Brewster's Millions scenario, where you HAVE to spend €200 by the end of October?

You might get more DVDs by taking a €30 fare to somewhere with a FOPP!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

glasgow has two and so does edinburgh and one of them has a bar, in.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Superman!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Glasgow is the home of fopp.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Glasgow people can never organise a FOPP

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"ALMODOVAR SUCKS"

I agree. In particular All About My Mother. Why should I listen to a drag queen prostitute bellyache about the melancholy of her life? You're a drag queen prostitute! If you don't want melancholy, be something else!

By the way, to the person who started this thread: stay away from Requiem for a Dream

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I have that already. I really, really love it. Shouldn't I?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

O. Nate is wrong, about Don't Look Back.

the bobfox, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

He's right.
