How Bush's grandfather helped Hitler's rise to power.

In the event you have any undecided or right-leaning friends or family, this should set them straight:

"...new documents, many of which were only declassified last year,
show that even after America had entered the war and when there was
already significant information about the Nazis' plans and policies,
[Bush's grandfather] worked for and profited from companies closely
involved with the very German businesses that financed Hitler's rise
to power. It has also been suggested that the money he made from these
dealings helped to establish the Bush family fortune and set up its
political dynasty..."

From the Guardian UK: How Bush's grandfather helped Hitler's rise to power

Ah, the sins of the father. I don't find this story very compelling. Who cares (in relation to this election) what Bush's grandad did? There's a Bush who is a president who is doing all kinds of bad stuff! And you can stop him, in just over a month.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking at the tit (Bush's gramps colluded with the Nazis) for tat (Kerry dated Fonda) angle.

nader (nader), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He's still going to win the bloody election though, isn't he?

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Anti-Defamation League begs to differ

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No. Kerry is going to win.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, maybe, if J.Q. Public begins to get some historical perspective (rather than just caring about this election) that one gunning for politically valuable medals in Vietnam is a touch less dubious than Holocaust blood money laying down the foundation for one's family's political/financial fortune - there's still some hope, no?

nader (nader), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The Anti-Defamation League begs to differ

The ADL article's nearly a year old, therefore without the benefit of the "...new documents, many of which were only declassified last year..."

nader (nader), Sunday, 26 September 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Shouldn't have abbreviated my original pull-out quote:

"The debate over Prescott Bush's behaviour has been bubbling under the surface for some time. There has been a steady internet chatter about the "Bush/Nazi" connection, much of it inaccurate and unfair. But the new documents, many of which were only declassified last year..."

nader (nader), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

'Unfair' my knob.

Sexual Air Supply (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Joe Kennedy to thread

Symplistic (shmuel), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I'm being cynical and unfair, but I doubt this type of information would even matter to the people who are going to vote for Bush. If anything, it might make them like him more.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

If anything, it might make them like him more.

Now, that's just silly.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

is anyone else as fascinated by the internal division of the american right as i am? it's like a flashback to my ad&d days; "devils are LE and war upon the demons who are CE" etc.

anyway, check this out.

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

divisionS i meant to say.

that article is pat buchanan's mag going after "kill-iran" cheerleader michael ledeen for being a fascist! juicy!!

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad to see the ADL debunked that... with a blanket denial? If only it were that simple.

You can't say that Gramps Bush was a Nazi symp (unlike Henry Ford), he was just a greedy fuck who was more interested in his bottom line than Nazi atrocities or the American war effort. Which doesn't sound altogether too unfamiliar, does it?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

So Prescott Bush equals

Eh?

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, he was just like Elsa, but with bigger bosoms.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha didn't Clinton get a buzz from saying that the great Prescott would be ashamed of one of George Sr.'s statements?

(and btw will everyone who thinks they have any clue whether or not Kerry will win please shut the fuck up? The election is over a month away, Kreskin. Fatalism is bullshit and I refuse to condone it.)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

well at least his last name wasn't doody!

x-post

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Anthony, for calling the election upthread. Lara suggested something I felt I should counter with some positive 'certainty'. But I dig that can be annoying, so will stop.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I'm cooler with that statement than Lara's. I'm actually cool with "my side's gonna win!" It's "oh, no matter what we do, they're gonna steal the election somehow, it's hopeless" people who I think should spare themselves the misery of another month of resignation and go jump off something.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I apologize for being cranky but I can't think of anything that infuriates me more these days.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's cool. I'm cranky because I'm still hungover from Saturday night, which just isn't fair! And my stupid sleeping pills don't work. Grr.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm voting for kerry, and my democratic bonafides are quite good, so lemme say 2 words wr2 this:

JOE KENNEDY

thank you

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

nb: notwithstanding the foregoing, i also wouldn't be too shocked if grandpappy bush did sympathize at least a little w/ hitler and some of his views. i hope that i don't have to remind people that casual racism and anti-semitism was frightfully common among the american elite during the 1930s (remember all those jokes about "president rosenfeld" and all those white-shoe law firms that wouldn't hire jews?)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i don't think anyone suggests that Ted Kennedy is an anti-semite. there are people who suggest that George W. Bush is one.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, in the UK the conservative party in the thirties contained a group who were much enamoured with the nazis. This was partly for all the usual reasons, but also because of a fear of the Soviet Union among the British Right. In his diary, sir Henry Channon writes about going to stay with Hitler a couple of times - once to see the olympics, which he seemed impressed with. I guess all I'm saying is that with hindsight we can find it incredible that people liked the nazis, and indeed, wanted to emulate them. But at the time, if you had very poor judgement, it was quite possible to have a certain respect for Hitler. A good book about this is "Making Friends With Hitler: Lord Londonderry, the Nazis and the Road to War" by Ian Kershaw. I had a proof of this, so I don't know if it is published yet. Also, Ambassodor Dodds' Diary, which gives a US Democrat perspective on Hitler's germany, and The Diary of Sir Henry Channon, which is easily the funniest diary I have ever read, but deals closely with groups who feel we should seek alliance with the nazis against the "Russian bear".

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

While there is no suggestion that Prescott Bush was sympathetic to the Nazi cause, the documents reveal that the firm he worked for, Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH), acted as a US base for the German industrialist, Fritz Thyssen, who helped finance Hitler in the 1930s before falling out with him at the end of the decade. The Guardian has seen evidence that shows Bush was the director of the New York-based Union Banking Corporation (UBC) that represented Thyssen's US interests and he continued to work for the bank after America entered the war.

Up-thread and even now I'm hoping the "liberal media" will take this hot potato and juggle it all over the networks, but alas, smear campaigns are the bread & butter of the aisle's other side.

No Swift Boat Veterans in the democratic wing of the Democratic party.

No Willie Horton. (Dial-up warning: Video download of ad)

No Tricky Dick and the Pink Lady.

Nope, the Dems will play nice, above board, and hope for the best.

But no, there's no hint of Nazi sympathizing in the Guardian's article. The most damning statement the article appears to make is Bush's shameless war-profiteering (to wit, making money off both sides of WWII).

War-profiteering, now where have we heard that before?

nader (nader), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's no secret that the Bush family loves money.
