ts LRB vs TLS

ansrs may b phrsd n txtspk or nrml. i can't tell the difference, but both of them seem to have the kind of long, ruminative, pieces that the New Yorker used to have, except that while the New Yorker's pieces were/are almost fiendishly focused on their subjects (i.e. the legnedary 12,000 word article about lead) the TLS (and the LRB?) will often make only the most passing reference to the book under review.

on a possibly related point, can anyone explain to me what exactle "belles lettres" are, and do either the TLS or LRB engage in this activity?

lrb.

i haven't looked at a copy of the tls in years, but aren't the articles shorter and more focused on the books?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 27 September 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

also i say lrb, but when i subscribed i ended up with a year of unopened issues, so i'm really only an lrb reader in theory.

I rather like the LRB whenever I read it, but that is not often. TLS I haven't been near in years.

I thought this would be a Dirty Vicar thread.

i never want to pay for either of them so i skim the articles quickly in WH Smith's; i find the urgency and the jostling add some much needed excitement to the articles.

i'm asking because i imagine there's a history to each, and possibly even a rivalry, in which case each would stake out its ground in reaction or provocation or consolidation of gains made, i just don't know any of it.

i'm starting to wonder if the TLS has developed a transmissible contagion.

I think the LRB came about during a Times Newspapers strike in the late 70s or early 80s, when the TLS didn't appear for months on end. The difference between the two is that the LRB is clearly left-leaning and has a lot of long essays, as well as book reviews. The TLS is more just book reviews and has less of a political stance, although is probably a bit right-leaning. I know an editor at the TLS; there seems to be a bit of an Alan Hollinghurst-style gay male young fogey mafia operating there. I actually prefer the TLS, I think it's got a greater range.

It's just, there have been at least two identical threads.

the only one i managed to find was this, pinefox. (wherein an lrb contributor attested the the quality of his publicaion's classified ads! perhaps this is the metric to use)

That is odd, Tracer.

Possibly one thread was on ILB?

But this isn't about books, it's about magazines about books.

Odd how every single piece given away as a freebie is Halloween themed. Didn't think they ever bother with fun.

It's pretty wonderful that we have three threads on this topic.
