Anyone ever flown Kuwait Airways?

I was searching flights and this airline is far and away the cheapest flight I can get. My Mom was like "OMG KUWAIT AIRWAYS?! NICE KNOWING YOU HAHAHA" etc. WTF is that shit? Another, somewhat less insane person said "that's really cheap! You get what you pay for, just remember that." My brother said "300 DOLLARS?! FUCK YES FLY IT. WHERE'S MY BIZ MARKIE CD?!" I say: it's cheap and I have no reason not to take advantage of that.

Your opinions welcome.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's the flight to/from?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

From NYC to London.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

or from NYC to somewhere very slighly just outside of NYC where it lands in a thousand pieces.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do you say that, though?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit their website is less than encouraging, especially the bit that says "Safety is ONE OF OUR HIGHEST PRIORITIES."

Shouldn't it kind of be the unspoken highest priority?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but this is what their airline meals look like.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

to be funny

seriously virgin shouldn't be significantly more expensive than $300 and they have nintendo

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, that looks fucking delcious.

(xpost I didn't know, I don't know you. Nintendo ain't worth 100 bucks to me. I got a gameboy, yatch!)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

But can you play gameboy against OTHER PASSENGERS?

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it a "dry" flight?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I ignore other passengers as much as possible!

xpost, if that means there's no booze, I hope to god not.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

virgin gives you ice cream!
honestly after taking america west to NYC and freaking out every time the plane "landed" I decided I wouldn't take a flight on a non-recommended airline just because it was cheap ever again. peace of mind is worth a lot.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

A quick google reveals that they do not serve alcohol, but that you're free to bring your own duty-free booze and they will provide cups, ice, and soft drinks for your own tray-table wet-bar!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

never flown it but it is supposed to be really nice, good service, nice perks e.g. fresh squeezed juice (least ya can get as there is no alcohol).

the cheap flights is not a sign of death(sometimes yeah - Sudan Air was choice of death) but most times its just coz overhead 9ads etc.) is a hella lot lower than other places so cheaper flights can be offerd. Have no fears on this one.

H (Heruy), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I know nothing of Sudan Air.

I have talked to a friend that flew it just now and she highly recomended it. I have no qualms. Well, I have a qualm, but it has to do with securing booze before the flight.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

duty-free!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

OH RIGHT!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

if they let you do that yer own booze thing, i'm still surprised abt that! i'll check and let you know tomorrer.

(Sudan Air was dire! my cuz used to fly is as she used to get 650 NYC > Addis round trip flights but there were always probs with 'em which is prob. why they're out of biz now. Egypt Air is ok and they have cheap NYC Rome flights so mebbe check their London flights)

H (Heruy), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Will do! Thanks for all the help. I'm buying tix here in a couple minutes!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i would fly kuwait air, but the times are not convenient for me. but they are by far the cheapest transatlantic carrier

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the times of day, of the flights, that is. it doesnt work out, sadly. i'd love to take advantage of their prices!

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think you have much to worry about. i flew air india once because they have similarly low prices and despite everyone's tasteless jokes and a lack of inflight entertainment, it was fine. the food was delicious. screaming small children were the main problem, as families made up most of the passenger list.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(obviously air india and kuwait airways are totally different, but ppl tend to have the same "OMG 3rd WORLD I'M GOING TO DIE!" reaction to both.)

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys seem to have no idea what you are talking about.

Kuwait Airlines has a fatality rate of 0.06 since 1970, which is much lower than any American airline. It's last fatality was in 1988.

It's fleet is bound to be newer than North American or European airlines. It's maintainance in NY and London is surely done by the same company that does numerous other airlines. I'm certain it's pilots have received training in the U.S. or other 'safe' countries (as a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if your pilot was not Kuwaiti).

So what exactly is the problem?

supercub, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Some airlines are actually statistically more dangerious than others.

For example, China Airlines (Taiwan) has a fatality rate of 7.16

It's last fatality was in 2002.

supercub, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont see what the problem with kuwait airways is. i'd fly a middle eastern or southeast asian airline over an american/european one any day. they're roomier, better service, better food. except maybe yemenia airlines, i guess.

and its not like kuwait is some destitute world-bank-borrowing basket case. its like, really rich.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

im about to get my ticket to london. american is $293, british airways is 25 bucks more. wonder if its worth it to go BA since they have those nice ergonometric seats with the headrests, while american is shit. but i dont want mushy peas in my inflight meal.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

mushy peas! you'd be lucky

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

does kentucky have an airline?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Kuwait is good, but not the same league as emirates. Indian is one of the best budget options between NYC and LON especially on the LON NYC leg due to the excellent food. (The south asian meal on any flight coming out of Heathrow is generally very good)

BA is very much better than american if that is the choice. 25 is worth it. You get scones and clotted cream for tea on the trip to NYC, better that virgin's ice craem if you ask me.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Air India food = the bomb. Bombay Mix for ear-popping snack! All the Cointreau you can drink (a lot)!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm taking Virgin, but only cause the Kuwait one was already booked.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

booze on the plane ahoy!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

but what's this about nintendo?? there was no nintendo when i flew virgin (they did, however had this networked quiz game in which i got pwn3d by pwn3d everyone else on the plane

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the movies were good though - loads of hong kong movies! yes!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Quiz game sounds awesome!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i had Nintendo games flying Virgin TO NYC but the bastard wouldn't load as it couldn't cope with the demand 3 hours before landing...on the way back it was V-Port and the games and TV choices were much worse (tho range of films much much better)

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah steve i had the V-port all the way (the new planes have that i think) the map is now INTERACTIVE!!!! (you can move about the world and look at places and ZOOM IN)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

they had The Office on the TV sections too! (although only one episode + the xmas specials) and you can pause and rewind and fast forward!

if only they kept the Dr. Mario : (((

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

V-port newer and technically better but actually inferior to the older system in terms of programming choice and quality of games (guess they fell out with Nintendo), couldn't watch Premiership highlights on the way home like i could on the way, feh

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and it crashed so was out of action for about an hour - but i was on a very busy (pretty much full) flight both times

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

also their "time til destination" thing was wrong. (it kept saying '1 hour left' when we're still halfway across the atlantic)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Last time I flew to London I had a whole row of seats to myself and I could put the armrests up and lay across all of them. It was wonderful. I've since found out this never happens and I can look forward to being sandwiched between two fat folks for the duration of the flight.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

they'll upgrade you if you tell them it's your honeymoon. "my husband? oh...yes...he's in the case"

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i got two seats to myself the last time actually! you might be lucky flying so early saturday.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

they'll upgrade you if you tell them it's your honeymoon. "my husband? oh...yes...he's in the case"

oh fuck, you're kidding. do not tell my wife this.

maybe we'll try it on our anniversary.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all lies, it's practically impossible to get an upgrade if you request one

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

im about to get my ticket to london. american is $293, british airways is 25 bucks more. wonder if its worth it to go BA since they have those nice ergonometric seats with the headrests, while american is shit. but i dont want mushy peas in my inflight meal.
-- phil-two (philtw...), September 28th, 2004.

BA has great food! Much better than American.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I would think that eating a dead woodchuck would be better than the average meal on American Airlines.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

our friends manage to get upgrades on BA almost every time they fly. I'm not sure how. they're much more vocal and persistant than I am (having never asked for an upgrade).

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

how much of a woodchuck would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck ate a woodchuck that could chuck wood

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

On our way back, someone at another check in desk was asking for an upgrade, and our attendant thought it was disgusting, 'he's bought a dirt cheap ticket of the internet, not paid full fare like you folks...' us interjecting, 'yes, and we've just got married' made not the slightest bit of difference. (but this was continental, and I will NEVER EVER fly with them again)

I'm flying BA to Dallas next year, maybe I'll try...

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad used to flash his diplomatic passport at the counter and ask if there was any chance of an upgrade. This worked a couple of times, once for a very long flight from New Delhi to the US, and it was worth the potential for embarassment. So the lesson is, get a diplomatic passport.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

my dad used to "let" his badge/shield for RI departm3nt of he4lth fall open whenever he'd get pulled over speeding....

Fuck You, Yamantaka Eye (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ba tends to be good with upgrades to premium economy if you're flying a fairly empty flight on a slow travel day, like late night wednesday.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you think of United? i've done all my transatlantic with them and can never get an upgrade... even when I'm paying for it with airmiles.

Catty (Catty), Thursday, 30 September 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The premium economy upgrade is a fairly good bet midweek if your there super early.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 30 September 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

united is my least favorite, across the board. once i was fortunate enought to be randomly upgraded to business class, but at the time it wasn't that much nicer than ba's premium economy.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 30 September 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

last time i flew british airways, i ordered the kosher meal. although i was in coach, i got the business class meal - not sure if this is normal procedure for kosher meals, but damn was it good. two entrees and lots of sides and two desserts of good quality. it was tasty AND filling. best airline meal ever.

its worth a shot. at least you know you wont be eating filthy pigs.

yes, united is the worst ever.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 30 September 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Special meals are a good bet for good food on a lot of routes. The asian choices can be very good. They will not upgrade you though if you choose a special meal. My dad found this out. A couple of times travelling with BA colleagues were upgraded and he was not, on very empty flights. Eventually he asked why and he was told that his low cholesterol meal could not be moved between classes so they couldn't possible upgrade him. (He stopped requesting special meals after that).

Ed (dali), Thursday, 30 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

when we flew china airlines and we forgot to requeste vegetarian food, the flight crew gave us their own meals! it was good too!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 30 September 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

On Qantas, they kept thinking I was diabetic and always served me before they served everyone else. I didn't mind.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 30 September 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Kuwait Airways was good. They let me on the plane drunk as hell, and I could smoke the whole time.

dave q, Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Smoke?! There are still airlines that let you SMOKE?! RFIRFIRFIRFIRFIRFIRFI

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

probably some of the regional airlines that formed from the aeroflot breakup.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Emirates had a smoking section when I flew with them to the UK in 97. Dont know if thats still the case tho. They were a brill airline - very new and posh and the food was excellent (King Island cream with sticky date pud... mmm).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 20 January 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Japan Airlines had a smoking section up until a few years ago. I've smoked on their planes. I used to be a nervous flier, so it helped calm me down.

supercub, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a smoking section on quite a few airlines until a few years ago, i think.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd rather get stuck next to crying babies than sit in a smoking section. all the smoke gets stuck all in the upholstery and its nasty

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i think a baby stuck to your upholstery would be harder to get rid of

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

In the long run, I think it would smell worse too.

supercub, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)
