Lite Brite!

Did you have one when you were a kid? What was the greatest image you ever created with it? Some of my clearest memories of childhood involve laying on our brown carpet and staring at the colored plastic pegs against the sunlight.

I need to get one and relive memories, but I want the real deal! Not one of these crappy college dorm room pre-fab things. The online simulation thing is nice for a quick fix (and for practice) however: http://www.sfpg.com/animation/liteBrite.html#

Lite Brite, I love you.

I think I've mentioned this before, but for some reason my mother was against Lite Brite. She must have had some aesthetic objection to it. I always liked it, but I'm pretty sure I never had one. I still think she was wrong. I suppose if I had really pushed for it, she would have gotten me one.

Do you think Lite Brite could even get through today's Safety Standards?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the ones i bought did.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

They're still encouraging children to get burned, electrocuted and blinded? Cool.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure if they've been modified for safety, but they were way less dangerous than i remember: plastic (not glass) bulbs and battery-operated.

I think I've mentioned this before, but for some reason my mother was against Lite Brite.

wow, i thought i was the only one! my mom actually bought us one, but we were never allowed to play with it, for some reason. i knew she hid it in her closet, and used to lie about it to babysitters to play with it. she busted me a few times, and got really angry.

i still don't know why she was so anti light-brite. i'll have to ask her. i think the only other toys that were banned were guns, and i wasn't aware that light brite encouraged violence or anything...strange.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My mom just got mad when all the little lite brite pegs got lost in the shag carpeting and she would step on them.

I don't understand how someone is any more likely to be blinded by a Lite Brite than any other toy involving, well, physical matter.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

One time me & this girl were playing Lite Brite whilst tweaked on teh shuhr00mz and I put this one red peg in and she looked up and yelled "YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
The boy who lives directly across the street from me brought me over a Lite Brite as a gift while I was sitting out on the porch the other night.

He pointed at it and said "Check it out! It's a flat screen."

There are plans for a Lite-Brite coffee table in an older issue of Readymade Magazine, but I've never been adventurous enough to build it.

milo z (mlp), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I did lots of crap with my Lite Brite but I don't think it ever looked like anything. This is why I am not an artist.
