people whose contributions to a thread never consist of more than one-line wisecracks, sometimes funny, more often not: classic or dud?

And yes, I know I've left the goal wide open here...

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

everything in moderation. too much of this sort of thing is probably 'damaging' the quasi-intellectual fabric of this domain.

why are the anon posters the most inquisitive?

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

or should i say anon poster (no plural) because it's always the same guy right?

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck washing quasi-intellectual fabric

Lucy "Mmm Love That Mayonnaise! Shoot The Miners!" Ferry, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Often it strikes me that the biggest problem with online communities like ILX is that when somebody makes a poor joke, there's no awkward silence to let them know they suck. And conversely when someone makes a good joke, there's not much in the way of approving laughter. Hence a lot of the actually funny people who might be insecure get even more paranoid and people who think they're hilarious but AREN'T (eg THE MOST OBNOXIOUS SORT OF PEOPLE EVER) just post away laughing at their own jokes, not realizing that the rest of the globe is just sitting there groaning.

I am a comedy elitist.

Bag of dicks, fagtogs, eat it, CAPS LOCK non-shocker and all that then. I never got the fuck washing a hat gag.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing to get really, it's just a funny phrase, like 'wooza wuzza'

Tom I love you for that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Trouble is, these catchphrases aren't that funny. Or not when they're repeated utterly ad infinitum. Or maybe you had to be there or something.

Prince Harry, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

people complaining about not being 'in' on the 'joke' = hilarious

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack Train, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

continuing my 'worst idea ever' season, how about a unExcelsior thread where we quote lame attempts to be funny and shame the bastards. i'm sure i'd be on there, but not as much as others...

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha that sounds like a great idea steve!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it might just be what's needed to drive me away forever :)

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You never know. You might win a steam shovel.

Didet Bebop, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Threads with serious titles that look like they would be interesting to read or participate in too often are just one stupid one-liner after another.. And if you don't read every single thread every day, you're bound to miss out on comedy gems like "fuck washing a hat" - which, while it may be fun to say, I never figured out why anyone would say it.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck Washing a Hat.

It's the new way of saying, sometimes you have to let go.

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't count the number of times I've clicked on a thread expecting something interesting or juicy or at least something to be righteously indignant about and seen nothing but 12 pathetic attempts at being the fastest joke in the west. Everybody's fired. I need more coffee.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck engaging in a meaningful dialogue!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

my question was ignored too.

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think stevem's idea is great. We could be extra cliquey about it and give it a false title, too - "This is the thread where we pretend to use hand puppets to recite posts by Lord Custos and Huk-L back and forth to one another!"

Back to work!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

my only real beef is the people who keep asking these questions do the anon thing so it's harder to judge what their motivation and level of sincerity is

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Motivation = jealousy of people who are funnier than they are

Level of sincerity = zero

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"the anon thing" is something I find quite intensely annoying, I must admit.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

This forum is like nipples, only evil.

THE ANONYMOUSE BANDIT (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

OK dudes I slept with someone (not my partner) but her boyfriend knows my boss and my mom is in the hospital with lyme disease plus I think I may have a serious drug abuse problem, have you ever been in this situation and what would you do? OMG

(I shd clarify - people logging off to snipe at posters anonymously annoys me intensely)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(I was going to do a C*l*m pastiche in response to that Pash, but my fingers and brain refused to cooperate. BAH)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see why that should bother people.

the anon thing, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

You can all go fuck yourselves. How's that for a one-line wisecrack?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

There should be no rules of engagement.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

and these anon threads seem to equate vague sniping or just don't offer enough to chew on in the question more often than not, which can bug

Madcap Funnyman, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand why taking a swipe at someone using an anonymous internet handle different from another anonymous internet handle you've used before is particularly annoying. Surely what one has to say is either annoying or not, regardless of what anonymous handle you post it under

anonymous, but really someone else who is also anonymous, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i imagine that's not the only thing you don't understand

Thanks for the shout-out, Tombot! I love you, as well.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem is hung like a momus. fact.

stevem lookalike, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

And conversely when someone makes a good joke, there's not much in the way of approving laughter

but this isn't true as most places would neither bother with nor sustain (because of it's evident popularity and richness) something like the EXCELSIOR threads would they? despite the wankiness of the concept they have proven to be genuinely great sources of cheer, and you get on there often enough Tombot so you should be glad! tho maybe i missed your point dude

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen Momus hanging. Nothing to boast about, I can tell you.

Not Momus, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

If you don't like a thread, don't post to it. If it keeps going, it's obviously entertaining someone.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the unexcelsior thread is a great idea. also, tombot otm.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the unexcelsior thread is a really terrible idea. if you don't like a thread, complain about it, it's your democratic right (altho 'freedom of speech' has to be compromised to some extent on public msg boards naturally AHEM COUGH REGISTERED USERS ONLY)

Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the unexcelsior thread seems a bit mean-spirited. So OTM, I guess.

This thread is unwholesome and bitter and totally useless.

unwholesome!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

How is this thread like a cheap lager?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a shame that there are ILX posters whose contributions never consist of more than one-line wisecracks, thereby disrupting brilliant fucking threads like this one. Way to go, geniuses.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i've got GCSEs you know

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i think in the bright future when people think of funny one liners, they should look on the useful thesaurus and replace every silly verb with one that's twice as long, affix an adjective (relevant or not) in front of each and every one of the enchanting nouns so that their quizzical posts will be more intelligent.

And the abominable people who ignore the resulting, really long boring posts, will not comment on how boring that really long post really was, due to having ignored it. Thusly, the poster can retain the faith that they are astoundingly intelligent, and will carry on posting really long posts that are intelligent looking.
