Right. So my band Canasta will be playing the CMJ Music Marathon in a few weeks, as part of a Chicago Showcase. (All bands on the bill are from Chicago and are more or less POP, whether that's indie-pop, power-pop, folk-pop, Police-influenced-pop, etc.) The show's at Arlene's Grocery on Thursday, October 14, starting at 7 PM. We're told that we'll be going on at 9:30.

Anyway, I'll be in town all weekend long, and so far, the only other plans I have are to see the panel that Scott Pl and Matthew Fluxblog are participating in on Friday afternoon. I'll also probably want to see a couple of other CMJ shows, since I have a free pass.

But obviously I would also like to see some of you! So I don't know what else people are doing, but um, I like beer. And hanging out. And other stuff. So holla back, NYC.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You should come back to the Bay Area. Play Noisepop or something.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Someday, Adam, someday.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, oh, you mean the Noisepop Festival. Right. We might not be noisy enough :(

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

grumble grumble stupid 21+ grumble grumble

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray for Canasta! You may recognize me as the heckler.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

rawkin- i hear that arlene's grocery is lax on id's. I'll be there if possible.

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 2 October 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that place doesnt give a shit. you can draw your picture on an index card, and write D.O.B. - 03/10/1965. that'll probably suffice

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 2 October 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

They're happy to have your money.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 2 October 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

awesome. one more person will be there to see jaymc's show then.
xpost
yeah, that's what it'd be like if i was a girl. for guys, it's a little different story

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 2 October 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

unless your money has cum on it, its just as good.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay let's not get into a discussion about who NYC bouncers like better.

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

the bouncer gets paid regardless. their job is to sit there and look big, not to turn away paying customers. as long as you have even the corniest of fake IDs, it will be fine.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay!!

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 2 October 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Revive: anyone else interested in hanging out this weekend?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

(You don't even have to see my "dopey band")

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Count me in, I'll be the post-Chicago welcoming party. Will email my cell number shortly.

nabiscothingy, Monday, 11 October 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Please post any plans - most likely I'll be up for doing something.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be around.

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

break a leg dude!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey: not sure how much online access I will have in the next few days, so maybe people could e-mail me their phone numbers if they want to get together? It looks like, apart from the show, I'll be most free all day Saturday or afternoon Sunday. If I can get online, I'll post something here, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Keep in mind that I have absolutely no idea about cool places to go, so the ball may be in the locals' court as far as this goes.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Have fun! I R jealous!

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, first you want to see Ground Zero. Then the Statue of Liberty. Then the top of the Empire State Building, and out that evening for a Broadway show. Sunday we'll drive out to Long Island, I know a place that has great gelato.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Central Park is a big park in the middle of the city.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Monday morning we will stand outside a taping of the Today show and say hi to Al Roker.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nabisco, I never got an e-mail from you!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I am pondering going to some of the bloodshot showcase on Saturday.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I will be in Chigago, funnily enuf, but N-co, call me anyway just in case.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

thursday is the output records showcase @ coral room. saturday looks good to me, slumber party, and call & response are playing around. friday is the vice showcase, i think at cbgb. also at delancey on friday, is the matador party and the ghostly party.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

but the output thing and thursday stuff is later in the nite. so perfect.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't tell if Nabisco is joking or not.

Anyway, I would visit the following: Grand Central, the Rowboat lake in Central Park, the Met (the museum) and its roof garden, the corner of Commerce and Barrow, Rockefeller Plaza, the Seaport and Brooklyn Bridge, the Tenement museum? the Transit Museum?

I would eat the following: pizza, Gray's Papaya, Zabar's or Barney Greengrass, sushi or noodles

I would travel by: foot, subway and cab. Maybe even boat.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 14 October 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot the Bowery

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 14 October 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

and Cuban food

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 14 October 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

also jazz at Fat Cat or Mingus Big Band at Fez

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe even boat.

I took the water taxi from Brooklyn Heights to Battery Park once. It was pretty awesome seeing the skyline, other water traffic, and out into the harbor on a bright summer day. Fun ride, too, if you go up on the roof of the cabin. It's a nice way to cross the river if you're in the touristy mood and would spend a little more $$ for a nice above-ground view.

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Gray's Papaya, Zabar's or Barney Greengrass

read: hot dogs and bagels with smoked fish, respectively

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

hit up mamoun's for shawarma. seriously.

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

FWIW, it seems as if my dead ass will be at Northsix on Friday for THE FALL (assuming I don't get donged re: will-call shenanigans). If you happen to be there, and you see a devestatingly handsome fellow in glasses standing in the crowd like a country mouse, awestruck and humbled by the grandeur of this fair city, feel free to come on over and mug me.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

or you can take the Staten Island Ferry for free (as prolly mentioned earlier on the thread).

David R., not gonna watch the Red Sox game?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like I won't be, BUT I will be wearing my Jim Rice Underoos.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

dude the Fall are good but they're not THAT good.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 October 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the recommendations, people. I wasn't necessarily looking for cool touristy NYC things to do, though -- I was mostly saying if we want to hang out, don't expect me to set the place!

Okay: hopefully I will see a couple of you (Phil, Nabisco?) tomorrow night, and then we can plan from there.

I have to get up in less than six hours!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 October 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

shit sorry i didn't make it. i think my body is really mad at me - im usually pretty good at forcing myself to go out, so me staying home tonite = serious trouble. hope you had a good show though - gimme a call this weekend if you're going out. lot of fun stuff going on.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 15 October 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

so the last two songs you played were KILLER. great show, glad to have been there.

lemin (lemin), Friday, 15 October 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, lemin, for coming! Seriously. Man, I just spent all day getting mad Pitchfork gossip.

jaymc, Saturday, 16 October 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

...which you will now kindly share with us.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, please to read the internets.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The cigar photo is distressing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm back now. Sorry I didn't get a chance to see Phil or Nabisco, as planned, but meeting Matthew Perpetua, scott pl., and a special guest appearance from Matos almost made up for it!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 October 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

How was CMJ? Chaotic?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 18 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been to Arlene's Grocery. In fact, I got lost trying to go there by myself in the middle of the night, so that was kind of frightening. But anyway, How exciting! :-)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 18 October 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it was fairly chaotic, but a good time. I didn't see nearly that much music over the weekend, just little bits here and there. Best was seeing United State of Electronica on Saturday at a small art gallery with Perpetua, Matos, and Amy Ph!ll!ps. The Canasta show on Thursday seemed to be well-attended, but who knows how that translates into future fans or whatever. I mean, we only sold 1 CD to someone we didn't know.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 October 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

I think I mentioned this on another thread a few days ago, but I'm going to be in Brooklyn next weekend for the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. That should keep me fairly busy, but I'll have some time to kill during the late afternoon/early evening on both Friday and Saturday. If anyone wants to meet me for drinks or dinner, let me know!

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

That reminds me of the time someone came up to me in New York, asking how she got to the junction of 5th avenue and 102nd street.

"four down, three across" I said.

True story, that.

Mark G, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

Bump?

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

no more

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:15 (sixteen years ago)

Well, at the very least, does anyone have any recommendations for a place to eat/drink in downtown Brooklyn?

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

Junior's if ya like brisket & cheesecake.

My plans are up in the air for Saturday, I'll let you know if I can.

Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

Okey-doke, Doc.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

Looks like me and Max and Nabisco will be meeting on Saturday at 5 PM at Pete's Waterfront Ale House in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Friday, 19 February 2010 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

Are you gonna be in the talent show on Saturday night, jaymc?

the clones of tldr funkenstein (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 February 2010 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

I will try to do that too, ok? (not the talent show)

Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 February 2010 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

would be great to see you morbs

max, Friday, 19 February 2010 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

I wonder if donna rouge is coming to the tournament?

the clones of tldr funkenstein (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 February 2010 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

he is not. sorry guys :/ good luck tho!

i am a big fan of japanese women (donna rouge), Friday, 19 February 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

Sorry I didn't go to the drinks. Some people at my house are a little under the weather so I went to Book Court for a few mintues and then I went straight home. Sat next to a guy on the F train who was carrying a djembe and talked to him a little bit.

the clones of tldr funkenstein (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 21 February 2010 02:56 (sixteen years ago)

good seeing you jaymc

max, Sunday, 21 February 2010 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

My cousin twittered about hanging with the Jaymc at the hotel last night. I stayed there for a few days in November--loved walking to Cobble Hill from there.

bowl of drawn butter (Eazy), Sunday, 21 February 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

Contest was fun, see you next year!

the clones of tldr funkenstein (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 21 February 2010 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

Good to see Nabisco, Max, Dr. Morbius, and Mr. Redd. Tournament was lots of fun, but I hope the next time I come to NYC I'll have more time to actually get around town.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 22 February 2010 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

So I am flying to NYC tomorrow nite and will be there through next weekend. Hit me up if you wanna hang.

sockless in moccasins (jaymc), Saturday, 21 April 2012 16:39 (fourteen years ago)

I am v. much amenable to that!
