La-La Land Records and CBS Consumer Products, in association with GNP Crescendo Records, proudly announce the release of STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION, a limited edition 15-CD box set, showcasing all episode scores as heard in all three original seasons of the landmark sci-fi television series STAR TREK (1966-1969). This special collection of ground-breaking, iconic music, from one of television's most acclaimed and beloved series, has been newly remastered from studio elements and features hours of stellar material previously unreleased in any format.

Original series composers Alexander Courage, George Duning, Jerry Fielding, Gerald Fried, Sol Kaplan, Samuel Matlovsky, Joseph Mullendore and Fred Steiner are all represented in this deluxe collection, their historic work meticulously assembled, restored and remastered to ensure the finest presentation and sound quality possible. Four CD booklets, totaling over 100 pages and featuring exclusive, in-depth liner notes from film music writer and Star Trek historian Jeff Bond, complement this attractive set designed by Joe Sikoryak, which is housed in a hardcover slipcase. Produced by Lukas Kendall, Neil S. Bulk and Jeff Bond, restored by Chris Malone and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this comprehensive set illustrates how the original Trek series scores not only team with action, adventure and drama, but how they are also infused with deep emotion and the greatness of the human spirit. Such characteristics have kept these richly orchestrated tracks vital and relevant decades beyond their original recording. This set is limited to 6000 units.

This thing was like THE event of the winter for film music nerds. It's rly rly amazing and full of treasures. I confess I only have it in illicit vapor form but I hope I end up with the bucks to own one.

I have a feeling Mr Veg might have copped the illicit vapor too? Or some of it. hmm.

POV for me atm:

"The Paradise Syndrome" - Gerald Fried
"Charlie X" - Fred Steiner
"The Enemy Within" - Sol Kaplan
"Amok Time" - Gerald Fried
"Where No Man Has Gone Before" - Alexander Courage

Only those last two have been released on CD before and the sound here is a vast improvement.

the price is definitely nothing to sneeze at so i can see how harnessing the illicit vapors might be the best option.

Yeah, hafta remember tho that the licensing for this kind of release costs the label a ton, as well as the epic curatorial/restoration work they have to do on the tapes.

Well yeah the fact that this even exists at all is kind of amazing.

It's probably the best, smartest job anyone has done on any release of film or TV music ever. I do hope they sell out (but not before I get an unexpected tax return or something).

There must be 6000 maniacal Star Trek fans out there with $225 to spend on this magnificent set? I'm surprised it's not already sold out tbh but I always overestimate shit like that.

I have long held the theory that Star Trek fans are of all fandoms on of the most likely to shell out $$$
I mean, look at the cost of the TV box sets when they first came out -- Paramount made BANK on those things and they sold like crazy for years, long before the price ever came down

We shelled out for the DS9 sets when they first came out and I <3 them forever

any good extras on them?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

Not that I remember? I think it was back in the early days where maybe the last disc of each season had a few bits and pieces, but nothing that sticks out in my mind

Pretty sure the music box is selling well, I think they gauged the print run to last a little while though. Unlike frickin' Varese Sarabande who put out an incredible Bernard Herrmann At Fox box set at the end of 2011 in an edition of only 1000, which sold out in like one day (at a similar price point).

It was pointed out to me by a friend, yesterday, that the first season of TNG has a completely different language/sound world in its score than later seasons. When I think of "TNG: Season 1" I think of awful plots and bad acting, and I usually am just dipping in for chuckles, but I watched a couple of episodes last night and was blown away by the score... it's so inventive and diverse and interesting!
