What a shameful, sordid ode to materialism.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

THESE CARS WILL BE STOLEN OR SOLD FOR RAMEN WITHIN WEEKS

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

there was a teacher who heard a friend singing "just a gigolo" in class and punished him because "gigolo" was a bad word.

this show must really piss her off.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this your first dose of American pop culture or something?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna say, what did you expect when you turned on MTV?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha. I've just seen it for the first time and I've had a couple of beers and it made me angry. There's no one else around to vent too but ILE. You lucky lucky people.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Sit on grandpa oops' knee lil boy and let him tell you about this thing we call bling...

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

There's much better (worse?) examples of materialism out of control, even on MTV alone. Making shitty cars into tacky cars is just the tip of the iceberg.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just the way the worthless saps who appear on it (well, the worthless sap I just saw anyway) act like their car being done up by a minor rap star and his team of flunkies is the pivotal event in their lives thus far. I shouldn't be surprised, but it's still EVIL.

Not as depressing as 'Becoming', mind you.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I will admit that the use of the word "pimp" in this context could validly be seen as a new level of shame for MTV. Though yeah, as far as materialism goes, game shows are a more blatant example. These at least celebrate the process of creating the behemoths.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If a minor rap dude pimped my ride, I would be ecstatic.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

game shows are a more blatant example

specifically The Price Is Right.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Keep in mind that the show's producers are only going to select the people who they think will be the most enthusiastic and over-the-top.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, I changed the thread title to avoid yet another spate of Googlers asking us to p1mp their fuckin' shitty cars, but I suppose it's no use.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was rjg who suggested that ILX bond by pimping rides together and I still agree. Fancy A Ride-Pimp?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think my Civic would like good in emo glasses.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Becoming is just fucked up. I saw the one with two teenage boys who got all sort of facial work done to look 'just like Brad Pitt.' Only nerdy and acne-scarred. Then they go to a party and get treated like freaks of nature (which they are - I think one girl pokes a twin and goes "YOU GOT CHEEK IMPLANTS?" with an ewww face), while thinking they're hunks. It was disgusting (the surgery part) and depressing.

At least ride-pimping is just tacky.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently the show I saw is "I Want A Famous Face" not Becoming.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have this theory that one day MTV or Fox will show seven shows in a row, each indulging a different deadly sin. Then the rapture will come.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the mechanics on this show looks exactly like a white Snoop Dogg.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Then the rapture will come.

Dude, it already happened. Where were you?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course young people in the LA area want their cars pimped. They spend more time in those cars than they do in their homes.

I love the show. I love the way X-hiBiT (or whatever he's called) just takes the piss out of the kids who appear on it without them really realising it. I did really worry about this one kid who was 19 and his little sister has a disability and he's the only man in the house and he was driving around in this incredibly illegal and dangerous cut and shut (a term I learned from watching EastEnders). They took it off him and gave him a new car, which they then pimped. But I did worry that the car would immediately be ripped off and this not-very-well-off-family would be left carless in the middle of LA.

Anyway, it's not as bad as E4's show where people have to try and cop off with their favourite celebrity. Watching some dolt from Norwich trying to pull Britney Spears is just embarrassing for everyone.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

This show does make me angry, but not as much as 'Cribs'.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I like cribs cos it shows you how money cannot buy taste!! I actually watched Pimp My Ride the other day. Exhibit made me laugh loads & the car was so ridiculous that i'd actually watch it again just to cheer myself up!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw that i want a famous face with the two rats who wanted to look like brad pitt.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooden Pimp my Ride is amazing. You just suffer from an irrational dislike of cars.

lukey (Lukey G), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I like cribs cos it shows you how money cannot buy taste!!

a lot of the "cribs" featured don't even belong to the artists! musicians and actors spend so much time on tour/movie shoots that when they come home it's just easier to stay in a hotel for a few weeks before heading off to the next thing. but mtv wants a house to show, and the celebs have to come up with one whether it's theirs or not.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Want A Famous Face" fun: try and guess who the hell this woman has had surgery to look like:

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

She wanted an 'English Rose' fatface? Jesus, they actually gave her a rock-cracking jaw!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

she looked much better before.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

No shit. Now she has weird eyes AND carb face.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet the kids on P1mp my R1d3 get fuct on taxes.

Dale Panopticalis (cprek), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooden Pimp my Ride is amazing. You just suffer from an irrational dislike of cars.

-- lukey (picninj...), September 29th, 2004 12:00 PM.

Damn right I suffer from an irrational dislike of the foul, environment-destroying, kiddie-killing things.

That Kate Winslet wannabe looks like she was quite fit to begin with. What a silly bint.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The best episode of Cribs was when they went to that Sum 41 dude's mom's house.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Naw, Redman's was the best. He just had this shitty little bungalow with mattresses on the floor, and you had to press two wires together to make the bell ring. It was great.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't there an episode of "Cribs" where ODB bailed out to pick up his welfare checks? Or was that something else?

"PMR" is pretty sweet; the cars end up being completely silly but in a good way.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i love pimp my ride! i mean car fetishes and throwing 90% of your income into the toilet aren't so noble i guess. but i can't help but love putting obsession for the baroque (or eh, bling) and gratuitous decoration first and foremost in your life. when's the west coast custom showroom fap?!

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ile's fashion threads are a more nauseating exhibition of materialism/consumerism than this show.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the ugliest photo of Kate Winslet I've ever seen.
