Stewart appeared on Bill O'Reilly's "The O'Reilly Factor" only to be told his viewers are "stoned slackers" and "dopey kids."

Who vote. Don't forget that, Bill.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"You know what's really frightening?" O'Reilly asked Stewart. " You actually have an influence on this presidential election. That is scary, but it's true."

OMG O'Reilly *dreams* about having Stewart's clout and wakes up with a raging hard on and then bursts into tears.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone see Stewart vs. Ralph Reed last night? If that's the best Dubya's got arguing for him, jeez. I only hope Kerry's half as good.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed it! more details, please! I was surprised to see matt lauer interveiw karen hughes on the today show yesterday. he was shockingly harsh, and was pushing her to admit that the "flip-flopping" went both ways. she seemed quite unprepared for lauer to ask real questions, as was i.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

O'REILLY: But you do have some influence. Now, how do you see that? You have influence. John Kerry bypassed me and went right over to you. You're only four blocks away. He said, "O'Reilly, I don't think so. Stewart, I'm going to go talk to you."

STEWART: Well, I have to tell you -- and again, I mean no disrespect, but the snack selection backstage, quite frankly...

O'REILLY: Yeah, it's...

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: You know, I don't want to shake Guantanamo Bay, but it's a little spare back there.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The highlight of the Reed thing: After torturing Reed a bit with the whole job-creation thing, he asks about Iraq. He was a big invade-Afghanistan guy, Stewart says, but this Iraq thing sorta seems like a diversion--I believe that's the word he used. Reed launches into this whole bullshit spiel about how Saddam had invaded two other sovereign nations (Iran in the early '80s and Kuwait over a decade ago), had fired SCUD missiles into Saudi Arabia and Israel (again, over a decade ago). As he continues using this litany of ancient history to justify the invasion, Stewart starts interjecting "Since 9/11?" between each of Reed's bullet points. Stewart had seemed to be stifling a lot sardonic laughter up until that moment, but he wasn't laughing then.

I know he regularly refers to the show as "the fake news," but it was weird to see an anchor at a desk talking to a dead-serious guest and then breaking the journo-objectivity fourth-wall. Weird, but cool.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

America has invaded two sovereign nations since 9/11, too, ya know.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite moment was when Reed was talking about the bad, dangerous dictator, and Stewart put up a finger as if to say "Ah-ha! I know what you're getting at!" and said "Kim Jong-Il!"

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"O'REILLY: ... And he probably wants to get hair tips from you. Look at that hair. It's great."

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Formerly Lee G - I'm pretty sure Stewart actually said "Since '91?" which makes it even more of a burn.

When I see Stewart conduct awesome interviews like that, it just makes me more frustrated that he's so determined in his own media relations to insist he's just a comedian with no influence. The fact is, he's the ONE fucking journalist who will call these asshole talking-points zombies on their lies! I loved watching Reed squirm, man.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Could very well be--we had the sound low so's not to wake the kid.

Well, as an ostensible journo, I can tell you I was/often am a little scandalized by objectivity tells like the stifled laughter. But scandalized in a good way, I guess. The media, at least in the U.S., is in this weird spot these days where one must pretend to objectivity even though no one believes you're objective--even when you're doing your best to be so. Stewart's approach isn't journalism, per se, and he's not pretending it is. A good thing on both counts, perhaps.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that certainly makes the "and eating it too" bit fairly yarky.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Comedy falls down once you've committed to one side or another. So Stewart insists it's all just yuks, and that's why they make attempts to go after Kerry, too. There's just not as much material there with Kerry.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Reed trying to say that Bush will get his ass handed to him in the debates? Cause that's what he said. Maybe he was trying to do an end-run around the debates before they even happen. "He's not a debater, he's a leader."

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a small article on the wire yesterday about Comedy Central taking offence to O'Reilly's reference to "stoned slackers."
According to their research, the average viewer of the Daily Show is much more likely to have completed four years of college than Factor viewers.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, for better or worse "stoned slackers" of the Comedy Central variety goes pretty much hand in hand with "college attendees." It's only once you're working on the post-graduate degree that you move up to Cartoon Network.

Standard tactic: Raise expectations for the other guy, lower them for your guy. Both sides are doing it as hard as they can.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I am unfamiliar with this tactic. Does this work anything like removing earwax with a big stick of wax?

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

makes sense to me.

tell people bush is at an unfair dysadvantage in the debate and everyone will be wowed when he pronounces most of the big words correctly.

i've found that once you enter academia as a prof, yr tv viewing is restricted to either the creations of ken burns or dick wolf (law and order). of course the cultural theory profs only watch reality shows and mtv.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also a wonderful tier of PBS-local programming that seems dedicated solely to academics and weird one-issue highfaluting laypeople; you can tell which ones they are because their names sound like academic journals. Some weekends I watch "Religion and Ethics Weekly," "Inside Albany," and something or other they have about women. I don't have cable.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(Really, I don't know who tunes in for a weekly four-person commentator panel about women's issues; I'm fairly certain it's not just average women.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"religion and ethics newsweekly" kicks ass!!

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It's totally enthralling, yes. Maybe it's just warming to see perfectly secular discussions of religion like that.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Inside Women" would be quite a hit.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i was v. v. impressed with reed, hes smart, hes agressive, and he belives his own lines, that authenticity is under rated and will go a fairly long way.

now why the fuck wasnt stewart as harsh on kerry as he was on reed and whos putting money on dubya showing b4 nov.

anthony, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

do you know who ralph reed is, anthony?

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was impressed with Reed too -- not by anything he said of course -- but by he was calm when his opinions were challenged and he gave eloquent, clear answers.
Stewart seemed as though he was tripping over his own words, and kept jumping from point to point awkwardly.
To someone who knew nothing about politics (or couldn't speak English), it would have looked like Stewart was the confused questioner and Reed was the confident responder.

My husband said that I sound like Samantha Bee during that undecided voters piece.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

'to get' should read 'do you' up there. That piece and Jon reaming Giuliani had me in the best mood I've been in for some time.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Giuliani came off as so slimy during that interview.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

He came off as a mindless droid regurgitating the party line and worse, thinking he was going to get away with it.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

I know. I've heard Giuliani sound intelligent and sincere before (usually when he's at his most brutal), but last night he sounded almost coerced.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched a couple of these this mornings, and so now I'm thinking some of the reaming/takedown language on this thread is just the slightest bit overstated. Good nonetheless, though. The one thing I wish is that Stewart would quit following up his sharper retorts with a "just kidding" or a subject change, the way he did with Giuliani; it's maybe a good tactic for getting the last word in, and for reassuring guests that they're not really in a hot or hostile spot, but it's also just somewhat depressing. Surely he can be snarky around the margins and actually press a point, or leave someone on the hook for at least a few seconds.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Giuliani's Daily Show talking points were pretty much verbatim what he offered the Fox News audience not 15 minutes earlier.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Reaming is too strong, but I thought Jon actually stuck it to Giuliani longer than he generally does to his guests and not just for the yucks too. Rudi wasn't quite expecting that and you could see it threw him off guard a bit.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The one thing I wish is that Stewart would quit following up his sharper retorts with a "just kidding" or a subject change, the way he did with Giuliani

i think that's part of Jon's personality; he has an almost pathological manner of self-deprecation, manifesting itself to the point where it undercuts some of the force of his points.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Helms/Corddry analysis was absolutely brilliant-
"Rob, what's the mood over there at the Bush camp?" "Triumph, Jon, orgasmic triumph!"
"The Kerry campaign would like to remind America that the Senator was raised in France by a pack of homosexual billionares."
"An amazing accomplishment for a president whom, as the Bush team points out, is by some standardized test results, technically retarded."

Fucking hilarious.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why that should be a talking point. I heard Condoleeza Rice, among three other Republicans say the words "Global Test" just last night. I saw a clip of it on the Daily show. Republicans want FRANCE to decide whether or not we go to war!

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen the show, but Morrissey said in Boston I think that he thinks Jon Stewart should be president, but that he wouldn't make it bc he is too short, about 3 and a half inches, and that no one has ever seen him standing.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why that should be a talking point.

I think it's pretty clear -- it's an easy phrase to attach negative thoughts to. They can easily spin it so that Kerry said that we need approval from every nation on earth before we do anything.

Republicans want FRANCE to decide whether or not we go to war!

You mean Democrats. And yes, that is the implication.
