Why doesn't Larry Tate trust Darren Stevens?

After all Darren endlessly churns out fantastic ad campaigns, appears to be the only person who actually ever does any work in the agency yet Larry is constantly threatening him with being fired if he doesn't lose at golf, throw a perfect dinner party etc. Surely he would be better off setting up on his own.

By virtue of having a nasty cold (oops, did I say cold? I meant bronchitis or something) I was at home this morning and got to watch that for the first time in ages.

He *did* set up on his own! And it was all Endora's fault!

Did quite well too, nicked a customer from Tate.

PS. It's Darrin (according to the sign on the door of his new office).

Because he fancies his wife. Also is big stinking drunk - Drinking With Bewitched is a GREAT game.

Which Darrin? Dick Sargent or Dick York?

I loved Bewitched as a kid. My question is why did cute, spunky and smart Samantha stay with either Darrin? Yechh, they're both geeky, nervous, unattractive, and slightly effeminate.

Put yourself in Larry's shoes: he's experiencing what most Western adults would interpret as the onset of schizophrenia, which tends to erode your trust in those around you. And as his psychotic are most acute in the Stevens house, it's not surprising that he is redirecting some of the confusion and anger at Darrin, no?

Mark Morris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess because all the warlocks in Bewitched are total roués, and Sam didn't want that (she's pretty straitlaced, whereas the other witches act like they're on their way to an Ice Storm-style key party, down to the clothes). There's also the great satirical element of Bewitched re. battle of the sexes that you don't pick up on when you're a kid, about the wheeze of letting men think everything is their idea.

I could go ON and ON and ON about Bewitched. It used to be doubled-up with I Dream Of Jeannie, which I liked less, on our local station. And I believe I have pointed out here before that Elizabeth Montgomery was a total socialist feminist type who had brick-thick 'intelligence' files for being anti-Vietnam and pro-Sandinista, which makes her really, really ace in my book. Also for playing Serena on the sly. Serena as a presence is like an exhortation to wear outlandish retro fashion all the time.

Yes, I believe I Dream of Jeanie did follow Bewitched at one point, and I liked it less as well. Barbara Eden was sexy, but kind of bubble-headed, and no match for Elizabeth Montgomery. And as a kid I loved the episodes with Serena; even Samantha's mother was cool.

Sean, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alright, I'll admit it - I watched "Jeannie" for the bottle. The rest was boring, and I only sat through it in hopes that they would show Jeannie in her bottle. My favorite scenes were when Jeannie didn't want to come out of her bottle.

Yeah, she just lounged around on silk pillows all day, right?

Sean, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think she had a princess phone in there, at least. But that bottle was heavy on the symbolism, so when I think of Major Nelson looking down at Jeannie's bottle and begging for her to come out, it's really funny.

one month passes...
They've gone right back the beginning on Channel 4, and there is something really quite creepy about the early episodes, with Samantha rather Stepford Wifey. I'm wondering whether she was meant to be playing 'not-quite-human' so that you'd realise she was a witch, or something, but whatever it was, I don't like it.

Mad TV once did a skit called "Bebitched!" which had me in hysterics.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Adam West was in the episode I saw this morning. Sam fixed him up with one of her witchy gal pals.
