Amoeba Records opened this morning on Sunset in Hollywood. Enormous, pretty much everything you could want, stellar used bins, knowledgeable nice people working there--it's so good I can't stand it. Bring money.

dan, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Great to hear! Friend of mine and I will be heading up shortly to check it out.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vinyl or cd?

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Both, and plenty of it. Just came back from there and indulged to the tune of $150 -- smaller than my usual megapurchases at the chain, but then again this was midmonth. Well worth the time to stop in at.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Princeton Record Exchange. I must have dropped a small fortune there in those pre-amazon.com days, and spared suburban goofballs with oddball musical tastes from regular trips to either NYC or Philly.

Then again, aren't record stores kinda unnecessary now, with the Internet?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No! Record stores are necessary. Where else am I going to go when I leave my apartment?

Honda, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Then again, aren't record stores kinda unnecessary now, with the Internet?

As long as there is the impulse to browse, record stores will never die.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Amen, Ned. Also, as long as there are crappy-ass shipping charges, record stores will thrive. Another thing, I never know exactly what I want--like, it's weird looking on half.com for used stuff b/c you have to actually decide in advance what you want to search. And as we all know, half the fun (actually, way more than half) of used shopping is browsing and striking gold.

Man, screw all you major-metropolitan-area folks with amazing record stores just a short drive away... Oh yeah, that reminds me, another reason record stores will never die--listening to your new purchases on the drive home! It makes driving a long ways to get to a record store so worth it.

Clarke B., Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Towers Records in Waikiki cause I found VideoDrome on DVD there. Rockah!

helen fordsdale, Sunday, 18 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Record stores will never fade away. Browsing vinyl is the best. Aron's Records on Highland in Hollywood was always my favorite. Does anyone know if it's still there?

rickster, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aron's is still there and still great. Amoeba is the same thing but five times bigger with much more of everything--new and used, cd and vinyl.

dan, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How sad is it that $150 is a "smaller purchase" for the Nedster? ;-)

Am I really that big of a miser that $50 is usually the most I will splurge on music?

Nicole, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mr Apps, if you're reading this take note. And bring me back a present.

Mark C, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the princeton record exchange's $1.99 bin = CLASSIC. (and not to be too much of an east coast snob, but calling anything in california 'the best blank in america' is immediately highly suspect to me, unless it's in and out burger.)

maura, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How sad is it that $150 is a "smaller purchase" for the Nedster? ;-)

Not so much sad as grim reality. ;-)

To Maura -- fair enough, I have not yet visited, say, Other Music. But let us assume that until both of us have visited the others preferred haunts that the question remains open either way. ;-) Though you're right about In-n-Out, with the original Tommy's giving it a run for its money.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe ten years ago, when I was still living in Connecticut, I drove long and far to go to the Princeton Record Exchange, because I had read it was so great. It wasn't. Maybe it was a slow time for them or something.

I pledge my undying loyalty to Amoeba.

Sean, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

websites will never overtake record stores for the simple reason of the USED BIN. show me an effective used bin service on line and i will eat my hat.

jess, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan...thanks for the f/b on Aron's. I'll be in LA in December so I'll drop by....looking forward to checking out Amoeba too! It's tough to find good vinyl here in Australia.

rickster, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
REVIVE!

Is anyone else frustrated with Amoeba? Maybe it is just that my tastes are getting a bit more obscure, but these days it seems like I cannot find anything at Amoeba anymore. Aron's has a more eclectic record selection sometimes, even, which says a lot.

*heading to amazon*

Dean:
How Many Indepedent Record Stores Does Your Area Have? (RECORD STORE ECOLOGY)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 13 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i was sort of looking for current opinions (read: "these days") but thanks anyhow.

Dean "jon williams" Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i stand by my previous post (as evidenced by my open handed exit of amoeba last night... although i did get to see carla bozulich and nels cline unexpectedly).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 13 November 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I mentioned this on another thread somewhere, but yeah I was kind of disappointed by the LA Amoeba when I visited it a couple months ago. The selection didn't seem to be as good as I would have expected from the immense size of the place. For the most part, the prices weren't that great either.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 13 November 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a better store in the country than Amoeba as far as size + content?

I think Aron's might seem better since they're smaller and everything is just easier to find, if that makes sense. They don't have as deep a selection, but of course I'll always go there first because the prices are better, especially on used stuff.

Any store where I can stumble across a used Russian Futurists CD for 7 bucks, the recent M83 release used for 11, and a really kick ass Sadies/Dan Melchior poster is okay by me.

subquestion: which store is generally fairer in trade value? I've had two recent experiences. I took a pile of 5 CDs, 5 vhs tapes, and 5 LPs to Amoeba and they offered up 25 in trade. I said I'd try my luck on ebay, ha, and went to Aron's. They gave me 45 in trade. Conversely, I took three LPs to Aron's and they offered me 7, for the same three I got 19 at Amoeba. WTF?

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll always go there first because the prices are better, especially on used stuff.

This latter part is very true. Amoeba is not at all good when it comes to used prices.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a better store in the country than Amoeba as far as size + content?

Yes, actually. Amazon.com! HI-YO! I mean, honestly, with free shipping can you beat it?

subquestion: which store is generally fairer in trade value? I've had two recent experiences.

Don't know about Aron's / vinyl trading. But I sold some CDs to Amoeba and while nothing great, they were things that would be sold out of the "new used inventory" section most likely and got nothing for them. The guy had the charm to say that he couldn't buy most of my CDs because they had been "rocked." Apparently, I had been "rocking" them too hard. You'd think with all that space they'd have a $1 used bin or something. Guess there's always Record Surplus.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Amoeba makes the majority of their profit on used: buy low/sell high. (which I'm sure it's very similar to other like-minded record stores).

The more they charge for new releases (which have raise $2-3 over the past 2 years), the more margin they can pull in on used.

This is why their used selection is larger than new stock. New stock they are buying at $8-10 on average from their distributor for a $13-16 retail. Used stock they are buying at $3-4 on average from consumers and selling at $8-11 (yes, i saw a $10.95 used CD yesterday, it was a new release).

And very often, they even turn a potential return (the purchase of used) into more profit when the consumer exchanges for credit.

Too expensive, too picked over, late on imports, very little deep stock.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(this is where i pose like a wrestler and say in a macho man randy savage stylee "vin-dick-shuuuuuuun!", because i was once bashed for criticizing amoeba records on minor points on a particular mailing list a few years back. of course, i probably deserved it back then, but it still makes me want to flex right now, pucker up my fangs and say "vin-dick-shuuuuuuun!")

Anyone else shop at Rhino?

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I mentioned this on another thread somewhere, but yeah I was kind of disappointed by the LA Amoeba when I visited it a couple months ago. The selection didn't seem to be as good as I would have expected from the immense size of the place.

Because there's 200 people in there just like us who are cleaning then out as fast as they can stock.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

does the macho man really say "vindiction"?

or are you meaning to say "vindication"?

or are you both meaning to say "vindication"?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone else shop at Rhino?

Even though I'm a Westsider, I'm not a big fan of Rhino. Can't really put my finger on it. Maybe just the over-all quality of the store. Their bootleg DVDs are appreciated though. They have "Cocksucker Blues."

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to go more when they were at the old place.

Now it just seems like the vinyl is overpriced compared to Amoeba and Aron's, and since I live in West Hollywood there's no point in making the trek when I could practically walk to the other two...

sad part of this pic from opening day at Amoeba: I'm in it.

even photos in no way convey the size of the damn place!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 November 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I go to Other Music here. Sometimes Generations. Never really anywhere else. The one on Saint Mark's that has the $1.99 CDs out front... they have some good things, sometimes.

thanx lol

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

All you LA fizzuckaz never mention Rhino -- in Claremont. That store is quite amazing.. much better than Rhino in Westwood (two totally different stores, same name, neither to do with the record label either).

I'm still all about the Noise Noise Noise in Costa Mesa, though.. but i have the o.c. genes that way.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

As well you should be, my dear DB. (The clearance sale this past weekend was a doozy as always.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hey I always find cool stuff for 4.95 at Ameoba that i never intended to look for! how it happens: i always go home and take the 8.95 cds, laugh at myself for buying them, tear the price tag off, and go back to sell them there again and wind up buying 4.95 that i didn't know i wanted until i saw the price!!!

is this unethical ? the cycle would never end especially as i can WALK to it from my apt now, but i have been a good lad recently and have forced myself to stay away these past few i'm-so-broke months

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dean Gulberry and Gear! - why haven't you guys been comign to LA FAPs??! no excuses now, we know you live around here haha

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, those punks. Youn and Hector as well! JOIN US.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

we should all have an Ameoba Shopping Spree (let's pretend) FAP and then ya'll can crash my pad for the after-party if you each give me one selection that you purchased -;) and then we can go to the Frolic Room ! haha

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, there IS the Michael Meyer/Reinhard Voigt thing coming up the Saturday after Thanksgiving...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

what does that MEAN ? haha

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It means DANCE PARTY FUN! Matos was thinking about coming down for that but he'll just be going to SF instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

his loss! where is this ?

Your stories about Los Angeles record stores have become tiresome

...

OK, Seattle... Easy Street records (the one in lower Queen Anne) has been REALLY good to me recently. Very helpful staff, great selection, used vinyl, new vinyl, used cds, new CDs, all sorts of stuff.

For finding cool vinyl shit, it's all about the Jive Time Records in Fremont... though most of you will justifiably think the prices are a bit high, I get the frequent member discount, and the guy who usually works there, R.J., is the coolest motherfucker on the planet who knows more about obscure Italian hardcore punk than anybody I know.

Most underrated record store in Seattle is Jam records in the Wallingford neighborhood. Jimmy, store owner, is a guy you never forget. They also have the very purrrrrific Jill working there (maybe M***s can share more there.. or not)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Vic -- according to Matos here, the Echo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Honestly, i've only been on ILX for a month or so, and to my recollection there hasn't been a FAP in that time. We should have a FAP at the tejano bar next to the Smell. Make you earn that pint.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ahh cool!! what is your excuse, Gear!? (i'm not breaking a grammar rule by putting the ? last, because the ! is part of his nym)

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

9am to 6pm: work
6pm to 10pm: watch old WKRP tapes, pleasure self to Jan Smithers
10pm to 12am: drink
12am to 8am: sleep

repeat

as you can see I'm fairly booked up

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, check out this thread and note it is before a holiday, so you can break from your pleasuring self routine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

or bring Jan Smithers!

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, that joke was horrible.
