Affirmations - C/D

After watching me go through the breakup of an extremely convoluted + somewhat dysfunctional relationship, an older + wiser friend suggested that I do some ‘affirmations:’ basically she said I need to start telling myself that the people I am going to attract into my life are essentially honest and trustworthy. My problem with this philosophy is twofold. One: some of my ethos is based around a definition of myself as a romantic outcast (cue appropriate Morrisey/Merrit lyric). Two: it really is my experience that most attractive young women are NOT remarkably trustworthy (maybe this is not true - but it is my experience). Okay, maybe it's threefold: even the word 'Affirmations' just oozes misty new age bullshit. Could such a thing possibly work??

New Affirmative answers.

turner, Sunday, 18 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well its not gonna work cos you won't know whether or not they are trustworthy until they shit on you anyway, no amount of affirmations is going to make you be able to tell if a person is trustworthy or not, it don't make you a mindreader.

WHY would young women be untrustworthy? Are you living in Versailles amongst sneaky courtisanes? Are you constantly being duped by malicious tarts?
If so, you might be interested in getting "L'Homme à Tête de Chou" by Gainsbourg. Good record for the state you are in.

No, there's no hope. Once you are trapped in a cycle of bad relationships, you will repeat them again and again. No stupid new age bullshit will ever cure this. Just accept the fact that you are a dishonest and untrustworthy human being and this is why you attract people you perceive as dishonest and untrustworthy into your life. If you want to know why your relationships fail, look in the mirror.

Just keep telling yourself, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough and gosh darnit, people like me."

Affirmation = Greatest record ever made.

My mum does a lot of affirmations and it seems to work for her. Personally, I find it all a bit wussy.

alix, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How how how is it meant to work though?

Tom, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They're better than oaths cuz you don't need a Bible.

Trevor, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they're better than oaths cuz nothing will happen to you if you break em

mark s, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And that makes them different from oaths how exactly?

NB Graham don't think that piece of mentalism hasn't been noticed.

Only affirmation that works for me: Every day in every way I am getting more like Dickon Edwards.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I try this mostly because i think i need to whittle down my dependence on the f word

anthony, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Samantha - is that quote from 'Death of a Salesman?'

turner, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Every day in every way I say 'yay.' Hooray? Oy vey.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely you're joking Turner. It's a particularly dumb SNL reference but appropriate here.

Obviously I mean apart from Teenage Dirtbag, but do I really need to tell you that?

Graham, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Derailment.

2. affirmation n. support, encouragement

Do you need affirmation? Why? Should you expect it from people around you? Do you give affirmation to other people?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 November 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm crap at giving other people affirmation. I'm too self-centered. And, yes, I do expect it from other people, because life just isn't fair!
