A handful of ILE posters (you can probably guess who) will be in the Blue Posts on Newman Street (north of Oxford Street, behind the Plaza) tonight from around 7-7.30 - come along, earlier or later, if you fancy a beer. It's my payday so I might even buy you a drink.

Tom, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am compelled to warn you though that this is a Sam Smiths pub.

Tom, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sam Smiths Pubs is da bomb!

katie, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ooh nice. sam smiths or no.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmmmmmmmmm, oaty stouty goodness, casn't reall ygo wrong with sam smiths can you? oh, unless you're a cider drinker i suppose, but they deserve everything they get really ;)

CarsmileSteve, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know that some here have their issues with Sam Smiths, particularly its bottled organic lager.

Tom, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ooh tempting, but Liverpool vs Barca is on tonight, watching is urgent + key.

chris, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'll try and make this one.

gareth, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sadly i can't make it anyway, so the i-want-bud tantrum must bide its time

mark s, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And why do they always assume, if bringing drinks over to yr table, that the pint of cider is for the GURL and the pint of BITTER is for the mang? I'll have them know I would not touch cider with a tar barrels tar (ho ho) very much, IT IS SEXISM. My co-worker is an odd drinker. He started off on cider, then I introduced him to the joys of BITTAH and also India Pale Ale YUM and then we switched to whiskey and he ordered whiskey and LEMONADE?!?! Odd boy. He sez the lemonade do not ruin the whiskey taste and actually it was quite nice. I still don't think you will catch me ordering one though.

Sarah, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but organic bottled lager is SO TASTY and its organicity balances out the alcohol damage, or something. the smallness of the bottle and price are pretty dud though i suppose.

katie, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

organic bottled lager is SO TASTY

I believe that's Mr Sinker's problem with it.

RickyT, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aw, not fair. I have to get up at 5 tomorrow morning. Early doors for me. Actually. I had a days repsite from drinking yesterday, perhaps it is time to recommence..hang the fatigue. Hmm. Hmm.

alix, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes i have to hand a recipe here for (admitttedly non-vegan) stinkbug pate which is also "very tasty" and yet curiously i feel no urge evah to taste it

mark s, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i do not understand, is Mr S a fan of the organic bottled lager or not??

katie, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you swines, I will be in the smoke tomorrow.

on one of your recommendatios I tried SS Old brewery pale ale, its not that great, falls well short of Timothy taylor's Landlord PA, or Bass Export PA (availible in sainsbury's now, wahey), have yet to try SS IPA though. PARULZOK

Ed, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alix I think you should register your attendance at the booZoR at the very least yasssss I do. I have bought sossijizz and things so I shall come home first.

Sarah, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But I have stuff to do. I have to read some chapters, and go to bed at NINE O'CLOCK and wash also, my hair and uniform. Before then I have to pay rent and procure some Barthes and a Belinda Carlisle CD. Important bizniz. And I need to eat at some point. Maybe I will turn up if I get everything done. Not including the going to bed part.

alix, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark S and I have fully documented experience of Sam Smith hostile hostelries.

Pity he won't be there tonight, but I'll certainly pop in round about 6-6:30ish if anyone's there by then.

My good friend Wally Klemmer sends his apologies. To the Dalai Lama that is, for mislaying his Mike and Bernie Winters tickets for the Skelmersdale Gaumont in 1955. He's just found them. What a card!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You really should register for phone banking then you could just call up at any point to pay yore rent INCIDENTALLY this is very late young lady. I'm surprised C*r*l/Ann haf not already called on this because she did to ME last time, beeotch ahem. Do come out, though.

Sarah, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe. I'm going to Leave The Computer Labrador now and go do rent stuff. This will take some effort, so no one post anything interesting for the next 5 mins, please.

alix, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come on Lixi. I'll bring my Barthes For Beginners and you can swipe what you need out of that.

I won't be there until half seven and I don't know of anyone who'll be there before seven - might be worth getting confirmation Marcello unless you particularly fancy some solo pint-nursing...!

Tom, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really am going now. I will come out. I am unable to say no. See you later.

alix, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I may appear, though it is very unlikely wot with having two new fab games and, er, no money, I only got the games cos I paid by cheque, ha ha.

DG, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm quite tempted, although i'd feel a bit of a fraud having only posted about 10 times ever. but the urgent and key q is: how am i to recognise the ILE crowd?

toby, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We're all 40 year old truckers called Dave. Well the ladies are.

I dont know - I'm not wearing anything very distinctive I'm afraid Toby. I've got glasses and dark hair a nasty semi-beard and I could stand to lose a few pounds, if that helps.

Tom, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm. If Sarah and Lixi are going home first they could bring the tiger hat. No-one else in the BP is likely to have one.

RickyT, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do an ILE search on Photo's of Tom. Some photos of Tom will turn up I daresay.

Pete, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cute and practical. My my, Sarah's lucky.

Graham, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hehehhehhhhehhehehheheheheehhe i like graham!

katie, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Save it for here, please Katie.

Graham, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It seems to be that I am now meeting workmate and going for a few jars post escape from office so sadly I will not be getting the tiger hat. I could message Lixi to bring it, though. My box of mashed potatoes, pasta and avocados can stay in the office for I am needed in the booZoR rah. Also in the JUNK FOOD SHOP num num.

Sarah, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am wearing a black polo neck, black skirt and ACE BURGUNDY BOOTS if that helps. If RickyT goes home he can bring my stripey TIGER SOCKS along and perhaps I will put them on instead of the boots. They are ace.

Sarah, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone find me a job in London, please.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There aren't any, Dan, everyone keeps getting made redundant.

Emma, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ok, i've seen the trig brother photos, so hopefully i'll identify you all. failing that my hair's bleached almost white and i'm wearing a hooded top with "bench" written across the front, so if you see me looking lost...

toby, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Besides, Dan, if you go, you take me with you. Heh heh heh.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*sigh* *sigh* sadly i cannot come as i feel quite ill and have to give a birthday card to a friend and besides must be home by 10 to listen to john peel on radio one anyway. apparently he's playing a session by some people i know.

katie, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm actually in London, and have actually miraculously finished a recording session on something approaching time, but my head is absolutely done in by four hours of listening to the most infuriating click track on earth, so it's unlikely I'll be going anywhere, even though I feel most unlike going back home to Herts. So have a good time, y'all.

kate, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

click tracks most assuredly do suck.

katie, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

was it good? i intended to come, i actually set off, but popped in to Suzys for half an hour, and then it was too late. who was there? tell me!

gareth, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who was there...? Me, Pete, Emma, Magnus, some non-ILE mates of ours, Tim H, Toby (nice to meet you!), Alan, Marcello, Sarah, RickyT, Lixi briefly, Lixi's flatmate Alice, Rosemary...have I forgotten anyone?? It was fun - quite leisurely and not as drunken as the last one, so no worst-ever-fireworks.

Tom, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

However Home DIY bands and "is it 'ardkore or retro house" more than sufficed. Also RickyT expanded on his evil plans for murdering children via numbers animations on Sesame St, WEEEVIL that he is. But we let him live cos he was cute.

Sarah, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And do not forget Round the Table What is Your Favourite Beautiful South Song! Wrong answer = Song for Whoever.

Emma, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're only saying that because it has nearly every female name in it, but not Emma. Hah!

Pete, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you talked about 'ardkore when i wasn't there? this is just not acceptable

gareth, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A "bangin' choon" was played (after long hours of B.South and their ilk) - there was debate about what it was. Nobody recognised it. It was far more four-to-the-floor than 'ardkore though - maybe it was hard house come to think of it. I believe some of the more indie people round the table (S____ and Z__ perhaps) found this fascinating genre debate futile.

Emma I think you just avoided the Beautiful South question by berating Pete, which is a bit of a cheat.

Tom, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was accused of being rockist. Grrrr.

rosemary, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everyone at our end got called rockist at some point, even Tim H, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

RickyT, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is your own fault for being a rockist and not turning up, Gareth. We were all disappointed. I actually found the debate fascinating and stimulating and that choon defintely wasn't not 'ardkore/hard house. Perhaps happy hardcore but I haf not heard that term for a long time and it's probably too outdated now. FOR ANYTHING.

I think I know my favourite Beautiful South song now, I think it is Rotterdam.

Sarah, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

is that like a Paul Elstak cover? i had good hair yesterday too, its just starting to get good again now. i'll definitely make it next time and won't get distracted on the way by aclghhplopvic drinks

rockist motherfucker, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That choon was beyond appalling and I don't know what type of crack you were all on but I sure as hell don't want any of it.

Emma, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is it rockist not to have any favourite Beautiful South song (I suspect the answer is YES!)

Andrew L, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It wasn't bonkers or breakbeaty enough for happy hardcore. It did sound very familiar though.

RickyT, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hrrrm this surely means ILE Awayday RAVE UP, nourished by Dr. Beaks.

Sarah, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Har har, Sarah thinks of the Thunderdrive remix of Let The Beat Control Your Body and pulls on the protective WHITE GLOVES.

Sarah, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Beautiful South=Rich mans Belle & Sebastian

gareth, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I apologise for not being there. I apologise for keeping Gareth up late drinking and smoking so he wasn't able to make it. But the ROCKIST BASTARD got his revenge by LOCKING ME IN HIS FLAT FOR FOUR HOURS THIS MORNING. humph.

kate, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i solemnly pledge my non-rockism. oh, and, the Bay City rag-rollers.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did Tom manage to avoid the Beautiful South question too? Oh, and when are we doing Goth: Classic or Dud?

toby, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

goth = duddudduddudduddudduddudduddud. well, goths anyway.

katie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I take offense at random goth disparraging. You're only allowed to disparrage goths if you've been one.

kate, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, goths smell of wee. Ahem. I wasn't, but some of my best friends were/STILL ARE dearie me. I am going to meet An Infamous Goth on Thursday who is also known to Katie heh heh. I would like to fix him up with my LADYGOFF friend but this will depend on how blatantly silly he is. (Alan: THAT'S POOR! But fantastic).

Sarah, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Goths

RickyT, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

alright then, have we done manichaeanism classic or dud?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmmm, Dr Beaks. Name the day Starry.

The answer I gave was Ol Red Eyes Is Back, but that one's still shit.

Tom, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dr Beaks outing as post-ILE Christmas party recovery strategy?

RickyT, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Going all the way to Guildford to recover might hurt. Rather a lot. However Guildford + Dr. Beaks + the HUGE amount of Guildford drinks - I am seeing a great all day Sunday drinkfest. Also no risk of cabbing it to TOWER and finding it shut. Incidentally what did you buy last night then?

Sarah, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Solid Crew, Roxy Music, Wedding Present. Earlier I'd bought the Dismemberment Plan and the Playgroup single.

Tom, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

st beaks are appearing in motorway service stations, one see on the m5 a few weeks ago there could be more

Ed, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what was decided about the xmas party

Ed, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i went to buy records and came out empty-handed! No Kompakt and Beanie Sigel too expensive

gareth, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom you have nicked my fave BS (NOT Belle & SefuckingBastian) song you cheater.

Emma, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am irredeemably rockist. I even think "pure rock" is the highest compliment I can bestow on anything. However happy hardcore rocks, no dissing, although it does sound so much better in theory than in practice. But, c'mon, 4/4 thumping bassdrums AND skittery amen breakbeats AND helium vocals and italo-house piano riffs AND breakdowns and hyperspeed snarerushes, how could it not be great at least sometimes? I was going to say all this on the HHC C or D on ILM ages ago but I got too lost in a big long rant about why Dougal, Hixxy and Slipmatt and breakbeat happy hardcore is so, so, sooooooo much better than Sharkey and trancecore AAARGH it's the most embarrassing and tedious bits of happy hardcore plus the most embarrassing and tedious bits of anthemic trancebag EXCEPT WITH ALL THE FUN REMOVED. Nooooo! Plus I wanted to list some good tunes, so I just ended up listening to loads of mixtapes and compilations trying to jog my memory.

You have probably all seen this already, but if you haven't take a look, it's quite funny. Well, I thought so.

If anyone is rude I will ramble on about how happy hardcore was an integral part of rural/smalltown teenagerdom in the mid 90s in the hope that Robin C will tell you all off for being anti-rural and nobody will notice that I don't actually have a coherent argument.

Assuming that the Housemartins' "Happy Hour" doesn't count, there are only two Beautiful South songs I'm familiar with and don't find extremely irritating and I can't remember the titles of either of them. I think they might be the perfect answer to the "which single artist or band would you erase from history" question, since not only do I hate them but I am also unable to remember any entertaining arguments about how much I hate them. Erm, until now, obviously.

Rebecca, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess this is generation gappy things coming into play but ARF how amusing it is when I find I am mixing (even worse SNOGGING) ex- ravers! My memories of raves = dodgy happy hardcore Amy and her horrific "banging choons" c90. I was too little to go to one but at least FINALLY those GET ON ONE, SORTED ect compilations are ringing bells to me. We in college of course, then became big fans of what we simply called EARLY 90S DANCE (we included Haddaway in this) but we listened to it in college whilst considerably UNpilled up. We did rescue remedy, man.

I am still not convinced that I woulda been a raver though. Why am I talking about this? It reminds me too much of Thunderdrives.
