A man who before the change would have been locked up for sex with a 12 year old would afterwards be doing nothing illegal. I don't see any real reason to change the age of consent, as people below 16 have sex without harrasment from the law, and it allows us to protect vulnerable people.

"Childhhod" as an arbitrary social construct didn't exist until the 19th century, did it, when the Victorians suddenly started idealising it as some time of sweet naivety? Until then people just had sex when they were ready to have sex, right? Doesn't that suggest that the age of consent is a totally arbitrary thing? It was no big deal in Greek and Roman culture for adult men to have sex with young boys.

The Pitcairn thing, and the fact that John Peel was married to a 15 year old in the 60s, has got me thinking about this. I'm starting to worry that I'm erring towards libertarianism, which is obviously a nutso political / ethical philosophy because most people are too fucked up / evil / selfish / mental / shortsighted etcetera to be libertarian with a sense of social and individual responsibility to make it worthwhile.

So many laws and cultural ethical consensus seems to be built on entirely arbitrary bases established by societies that have little to do with the way we live now, and yet they are thought of and expressed as if they are somehow natural and correct states of thought and behaviour.

I dated a sophomore in college a year ahead of me.

I learned later in that relationship that she was 15.

The actual age of consent is arbitrary. What matters is the degree of mental maturity. There are 25 year olds who shouldn't enter into binding contracts. There are 15 year olds who are more mature than most adults. Legislative decrees on the matter are political compromises to satisfy constituencies.

BTW, I wasn't at the time interested in robbing cradles. 30-45 are the most attractive years, in general.

True enough. But so is the age of majority. The point being that, in order to serve the socially desirable purpose of shielding the immature from the worst effects of their immaturity, some line must be drawn somewhere so that society can at least make a pretense of rational rule making. There is no way to do this without a certain amount of arbitrariness.

think u misunderstand -- in the uk at least, it's extremely rare for a 13/14 year old to be a full time university student and would require special dispensation etc

usually only happens to flaky farmhoused maths 'prodigies' with psycho parents iirc

but i dunno if it's more common in the u.s. and thus ppl wouldn't be so aware of it?

think 16 in the uk is about right, although anyone over 20 with a 16 y/o partner is a bit creepy. i'm 29 and wouldn't date anyone under about 23 but that's just me.
