I searched and saw that a few people have been ther. But I am wondering how it is. Are there nice, old hotels to stay in? Are there really old bath houses still operating?

The Arlington and The Majestic are wonderful. Most of the bath houses are either closed or are being remodeled, though a few are indeed open. The best time to go is during racing season, when the horses run at Oaklawn. There are also lots of woodsy and nature stuff to see in the area. It is a national park, after all.

and if you go there this very week you can attend the world's premier "free" (donations encouraged) documentary film festival.

It used to be a big mob vacation spot during prohibition...

You can ride in amphibious vehicles called "Ducks" or something. I've been there a couple times.

When I went there, I stayed with my family in an old barn like building which had been converted into a bed and breakfast. It was really neat and hodge podge - I wish I could remember what it was called... And it was out in the country. In the morning, I would go on long exploration walks and find all kinds of wild animals.

The town kind of creeped me out though, something about those old bath houses. They seemed haunted.

my grandparents live there.
it's run down, but sorta sweet in this run-down, southern, natural springs way.
there are plenty of places to stay...the arlington is fancy, but you could find any number of b & b's or run down-ish motels. the bath houses are cool.......i guess i'd go there only if i was driving through. i don't know that it would be a destination getaway for me.

it's kind of a dump, really

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah. it is sad.

At least it's better than Branson.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

O, I think I would rather it be run down. I was afraid that the amusement park and racetrack had brought in a lot crappy glitzy cheese.

So it's old and rundown, but is there any sense of former opulence?

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah. that's what they're clinging too. the whole historic strip is a musty crumbling testament to that. it's a little sad, a little cool. and the water from the spring (bring a jug) is pretty damn tasty.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots of former opulence. Emphasis on the word "former".

You know, if I was a fourteen year-old goth art student armed with a black-and-white 35 mm camera, Hot Springs would really be my kinda town.
