Don't fucking tell me I need a new browser!!

Granted, my browser is from 1992 or something, but I get really fucking pissed when I go to a website (ABC News, for instance), and see this:

"Welcome to our new improved website! It looks like you're using an older browser, so you won't be able to enjoy all our lame, annoying flash! However, you can download a new browser here!!" or some such...

Most of the shit on the internet is just some form of advertising anyway, so don't make folks jump through hoops!

I can watch "My Three Sons" on a new plasma flatscreen and "Alias" on a 1971 B&W Cutis Mathis! Websites should work the same.

Band websites are the worst offenders.

andy, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's cuz bands are so DESPERATE to WOW you with their internet presence.

9 times out of 10 Flash seems to be annoying and unnecessary.

But that 10% of PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME is so worth it though

I use the Firefox AdBlock extension to get rid of most flash ads.

Firefox sometimes says that it needs to download some software, but I don't bother. It tells me in an unobtrusive way.

this is totally unrelated but it reminded me of Andy:

California

Do you know what happened this month back in 1850?

California became a state.
The state had no electricity.
The state had no money.
Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gun fights in the streets.
So basically, it was just like California today except the women had real boobs.

"Firefox" was a great Cold War movie... remember when Clint had to "think" in Russian to make the plane's weapons work?

andy, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I read ILX using Lynx occasionally. Frankly, I don't feel I'm losing much when I do.

(main problem: it caches aggressively, so I always have to manually refresh New Answers when returning to it from a thread)

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX is one of the few sites left that truly works in lynx (I tend to use eLinks but same shit really)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

You're wasting your time on one of the wrong internets -- go use a better one.

Mickey, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the current aol ad campaign that says they listen to customers' suggestions on "how to make the internet better."

motown modown (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, and I'm sure all the bigshots at AOL are attractive 30 something model-types in casual dress and not evil white men in suits.

It isnt just flash that means one needs an updated browser, a lot of sites now use CSS and layers instead of tables - rightly so, I say - and older browsers like Netscape 4x and IE5 didnt follow W3C standards, so they sucked all along.

Mozilla/firefox is nifty.
