What rituals are Boston Red Sox fans here (and elsewhere) carrying out today?

In hopes for, you know, a certain something to happen tonight?

My coworker Tom should be here momentarily and if he's not wearing his jersey, T-shirt *and* baseball cap I'll be very surprised.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hungover, superstitious mumbling if the Sox fans in my office are any indication.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Same old same old....funny the Sox haven't lost a game since I turned thirty. I've also been wearing the same "Ramirez" t-shirt every game night and haven't washed it once. Yes I smell like an onion farm, but if the Sox pull one out tonight i will be the happiest onion farm in the world.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill Simmons brings up some writings from a certain Red Sox messageboard about who the Red Sox should win it for...heres mine.

The Red Sox should win it for my grandfather who died when I was twelve and was the man who bought me my first baseball glove and my first Red Sox hat. He died in 1986 one week into the dreaded 86 season. I know he's looking down today with a great big smile on his face. The weird thing is my grandmother always said to me "when you see a bluejay outside your window thats your grandfather looking in on you". Well, for the past week theres been a bluejay landing on my porch on regular intervals....

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I saw that board thread last week and posted it but I think it got lost. Here's the link:

Are you sure that's not Jesse Barfield?

(Just kidding Chris, that's incredibly sweet)

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, its Jimmy Key... ;)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Although I did get a tremendous chuckle out of the thought of Barfield landing on my porch on his way to Florida.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think people who post on this thread should post who they want the Sox to win it for.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I've found that Red Sox fans take absolutely nothing for granted. We've lived through too many disappointments that even a three game lead is still a nailbiter. I was actually upset at Yahoo today when it said something about the Sox winnning being almost "inevitable". Don't jinx them!

My ritual is going to be the same as any Sox game--hope our bats are going, pray that Lowe will pitch like he did in the last game & keep hope alive that this may be the year.

BTW--I want the Sox to win it for the Sox. Secondly, for my girlfriend's grandmother, who has been a fan since she was a kid & watches every game religiously with a Miller Light and cigarette in hand. We're going to watch the game with her tonight.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

rickey henderson

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

For Ted Williams, man. For Yaz and Fisk and Pesky and Dom and Oil Can motherfucking Boyd.

And for five year old Tep, whose cousins forced him to go to see the stupid Black Stallion because he was too young to go to the Red Sox game.

I'm wearing my Nomar jersey tonight -- say what you will, but I've worn it every game since game 4 of the ALCS -- with a broom in one hand and the last can of Moxie in Indiana in the other.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I want the Sox to win it for Velveteen Bingo.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Tony C, Christ.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

win it for jose canseco

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

win it for carney lansford

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Why even bother with rituals? We St. Louisans are basically handing you the series on the platter.

mike a, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

DAVE STAPLETON

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Win it for the men who placed the hat on Mt. Everest; win it for the people who dragged the pond to find the piano.
Win it because it's appropriate for the Red Sox and Kerry to come from behind and reverse the curse.
The election is next week - maybe we can have a grand slam .

aimurchie, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Win it for the Sox - you've earned it. Win it for the Sox fans who have held out hope for so long. Win it for Ted, for Oil Can, for Yaz. Win it for all the older fans who lived and died waiting for the title. Win it for my godson who died before he turned 4, but wore his Sox cap every day and his Sox jammies every night.

Win it because it's about goddamned motherfuckin' we bleed Red, bring it home boys time. Lean back.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and win it for me so i can get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you weren't even going to sleep, it was all about partying on the Green Monster.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

when all the partying is done my friend i shall sleep rumpleforeskin style.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Noted.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

At first I confused Rumpelforeskin with Rip van Wankle and thought Chris would go for forty wanks.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Win it for my godson who died before he turned 4, but wore his Sox cap every day and his Sox jammies every night."

Win it for every child who goes to sleep in his Red Sox jammies and wakes up knowing heros are real.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Word.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Godamn it i meant Rip Van Winkle. I forget my tales.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Thales?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

leave me alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I saw someone sacrificing a virgin from New York on some kind of an altar and mumbling about Pedro.

The joke was on them, though. I'm pretty sure she was just a slutty BU girl from Jersey.

RED_SOX_NATION, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, like there are any virgins in New York.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Groucho Marx on Doris Day: "I knew her before she was a virgin."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Kicking Ellis Burks out of the dugout is a shame, but perhaps necessary, ritual-wise. He's the last link to that '86 team.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to say the series has been great for the city of Boston. Everyone around here is excited and even when the trains are packed to the brim, there has been nothing by politeness. It does give you some local pride.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they should win it for the Yankees.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

And that, indeed, is that.

Velveteen, enjoy being the happiest onion farm ever!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

TEARS OF JOY MY FRIENDS! TEARS OF FUCKING JOY!

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm waiting for one of the players to say "Vote Kerry" on camera

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It was your time, Red Sox. Finally, I guess.

Cardinal Fan (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Win it for my godson who died before he turned 4, but wore his Sox cap every day and his Sox jammies every night."
