VANITY, VANITY....

Confess your photographic narcissism right here, right now.

(Or, does the communal American Puritan psyche caused us to feel unnecessary guilt while photographing ourselves [when no one else is around.] Are we all Amish deep down inside?)

andy, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I take pictures of myself when noone esle is around.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Who the hell is this voyeuristic Noone Esle?

Lee Friedlander took a lot of self-portraits with his trusy Leica.

This is my only self-portrait I have on Photobucket right now:

Don't forget to pucker your lips and look up with puppy-dog eyes, little high-school goth-ettes! The internet needs you!!

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Digital cameras allow you to take thousands of photos of yourself, and delete all but the most flattering. Self-love knows no bounds.

andy, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken C and me to thread?

We used to post daily self-portraits on another board.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't show up in photographs.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, that is an awesome, awesome photo. Where did you score Texas-shaped glasses?

Hank Tenbeer (kenan), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I weird in that, even when I had a digital camera to hand, I never once took a photo of myself? This is low self-esteem, but I surely can't be alone in it, can I?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The TX sunglasses belonged to Sarah's grandmother, a longtime Texas resident.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a whole thread where people took pictures of themselves with the previous pics in the background, but I don't remember what it was called. But it was awesome.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

This is me looking nothing short of frightful after about two hours of sleep under sickly flourescents.

What if you take a picture of yourself twice?

No, when I had a digital camera I never did either. Though, to be fair, I never got round to taking many pictures with it anyway - which is why I ended up giving it to my sister.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

That makes me sad. Everyone should have a camera to play with.

Hank Tenbeer (kenan), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And not a camera phone, either, people!

Hank Tenbeer (kenan), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I used that digital camera lots - just not photos of me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Not one of my finer performances...

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

DAMN! What am I doing wrong???

It's at http://tinypic.com/em5nn regardless...

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yay, it worked! thanks hank! sorry for tying up the thread for everyone...

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I jusy interject here and ask why guilt over "photographic narcissism" need be purely an American thing?

Its just I see plenty of pouting doe eyed gothettes on LJ that live right in my city, also, and I'm a bit tired of it. Hell, I'm VERY sick of it.

Having said that I like selfportraits but I like to think of it in more experimental terms, like Cindy Sherman shots maybe. Not that I've ever really tried to do storylike poses in costume but eh.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Americans are supposed to be humble and self-deprecating... like Woody Guthrie and Creedence Clearwater.

Brits are flamboyant and self-aggrandizing, like Elton John and Dame Edna.

andy, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Australians have the Tallest Poppy syndrome!

andy, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Dame Edna was Australian?

papa november (papa november), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

GOod point on the tall poppy thing andy! ;) But yes, Dame Edna is Australian. And a he. His name's Barry Humphries :)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I always hope the camera will start lying, but I carry on taking photo's of myself anyway.
