I really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY hate it.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think almost everyone does, Nowell, at least some of the time. I hope it gets less horrible for you.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you dislike about school nowell?

i'm guessing you've maybe elaborated on it elsewhere on ilx, but i didn't see those threads

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The other kids.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

as for me, some of my school years were great, while others were awful. but, even during the good times, there were days where i'd come home just exhausted with the sniping and bitching and slagging.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

that's how you know you're not stupid.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

High school is the worst thing in the world.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

fair enough, nowell. it was the same with myself - any bad times at school were all about other kids rather than teachers. i had tense times with many teachers, but i actually *enjoyed* those quite a bit.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin is OTM. I hated school - I tried to leave when I was 16, but they wouldn't let me.

And Nowell, nobody likes the other kids as school. Teenagers are mostly insufferable, present company excluded, and they can be pretty cool if you speak to them one on one; but get a lot of them together in a school...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

high school was ok. junior high was way worse.

motown modown (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

All the other kids seem to have a good time.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i doubt that, nowell. school is very 'cull the weak from the herd', at least my school was. kids try not to show weakness, but i'm sure they're as exhausted by the whole thing as you are.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

except for the REALLY popular kids who get a lot of girls. they're having a blast.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get any boys!

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Life honestly does get better, Nowell. Have patience (easy to say, I know). All the other kids are almost certainly having a worse time than they're pretending too.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

All the other kids seem to have a good time.

Many just feel compelled to convince others that they are.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

But they seem so...well, not easily riled up, like me.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

High school is hell. Didn't you all watch "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

x post
I mean, unlike me.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine that it gets worse.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Nowell, a big part of being a teenager is thinking that you're different from everyone else and that your suffering is unique. You're not and it's not. This may seem mean, but it should be comforting. Everyone else is going through the same shit you are, because that's what teenagers do.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheer up girl.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll try.
Ok, I gotta go now. I'm off to a class I REALLY hate. (There ARE some I don't hate so much.)

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, try being 30 something, oh wait...

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, I had a shit time in school. I was nerdy, unpopular and felt like I was missing out on all the fun. pretty much as soon as I started A-Levels (that's at age 16, don't know what the US equivalent is) that all changed as all the fuckwits dropped out to get crappy jobs and suddenly I had more friends than ever before as all the cool, artistic people found each other. But before then there were days when I felt much like you, so I can totally identify.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought high school was fun. I was never a particularly accomplished student, and was as freakish as all high school kids, but I got along okay.

There were beer bongs and regular bongs, ropeswings and bonfires, sneaking out after hours, and Black Flag... maybe I'm thinking more of my extracurricular activities.

andy, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the best grades in school, was in the football team, tennis and chess and table tennis and bridge champion, and was funny and popular with other students (at prize day I seemed to get the biggest cheer of the day) - the teachers hated me because I took the piss all the time - but I was miserable and lonely a lot of the time at school. I don't imagine that was apparent to too many other people.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bababa BA ba BA BA BA,
Bababa BA ba BA BA BA,
Bababa BA ba BA BA BA,
Bababa BA ba BA BA BA!

DAYYYYYVID WATTS, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I disliked the teachers most of all. many of the students were twats too. mainly I disliked the restrictive nature of school, from the age of 10 all the way through.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

All I can say is I am a very different person to the boy I was in high school. That said, it wasn't all bad.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't seem to get along with ANYone.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Why? I don't understand it.

Nowell (Nowell), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you're in high school. Don't worry, soon you'll be out, forget all the bad parts, and look back with fondness. Really, you will. I promise.

mouse (mouse), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Come and live on the internet with us.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX has improved my self-esteem 230% since freshman year!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I hated high school also. I dropped out when I was 15 and it was probably the best decision I ever made.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

don't drop out of high school. college is wonderful.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 28 October 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it still wonderful if writing essays causes severe emotional trauma and takes 2-3 hours per paragraph?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 28 October 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My mom went to college when I was little. She took me with her. She never finished it.

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

HIgh School is also a massive waste of time, nothing much you do in it will stand you in good stead for later life, and as everyone said - you're not alone, everyone else will be doing the "argh they all hate me I dont fit in" thing too. Even if they're in gangs or groups, they're probably doing so (and picking on others) out of a desperation to fit in.

Find yr niche. Be alone if that suits you. Go watch Pump up the Volume.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I like being alone. I'm tired of trying. But I'm in this "program" that I don't want to be in....It's a pretty long story.

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

in high school i hated the other kids and didn't get any boys either. it goes away!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But I don't wanna be an adult either.

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it's ok, you don't have to if you won't want to. most people still act like children after high school anyway. (look at jon williams!) buck up!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I'm dreading having to get a job and shit.

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

A little advice from old man Lukey.
1st. do your own thing, have an interest, something you are working on, that has nothing to do with school or the other kids, and they will start liking you more.
2nd. dont bunch them all in togeather, you may find that some of them are descent, they just act like assholes so they look cool in front of their peers.
3rd. remember that you are surrounded on all sides by insecure fuckups, just as they seize on weakness in any form, so it runs the other way, if you show strength they will gravitiate towards you.
4th. if anyone is giving you shit, wait till they stop talking, look them square in the face and say "are you finished? tends to stop people in their tracks.
5th. Dont worry about the boys too much, get yourself togeather and you wont know what to do with all the lovin that will be coming your way.

lukey (Lukey G), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope you're right.
But I'm just incapable of communicating with people. I'm really shy. Probably cuz I've been rejected so much, even when I was little. Maybe it's something that's been branded into my subconscious. I don't know. I have one or two friends, though.

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 28 October 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

its important to act a little aloof, like you dont need any more friends. Try to relax and try to remember that school is just areflection of real life, and that rejection is an unavoidable part of real life. Everyone gets rejected, but remeber not to dwell on it, as this will foster self doubt and make rejection a cycle rather than an occasional setback.

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 29 October 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

nowell, go out and buy(or d/l) this album:

http://www.avguide.com/film_music/music/musicreviews/images/replacements_stink.jpg

and listen to the 2nd track repeatedly. It'll help a little.

Then, in a year or two, get this one:

http://www.dailyvault.com/replacements_let.jpg

it should help even more.
