Bartering & Trading

I need some help. I'll soon be working on a radio story about people who have bartered/traded in liu of using a monetary exchange for goods &/or services. For the purposes of the piece, it should be Chicago specific. Does anyone have any ideas/leads? I have a couple, but if there were more, it could make this a really neat piece.
Thanks!

you need to find some hippies. Take some deodorant to swap with them, maybe for drugs

no seriously. i have a doctor that traded a new roof for a boob job...a dentist that traded a root canal for a painting ...

A friend of mine, now sadly gone, once successfully chatted up his dentist's office manager. After they had been going out for several months she (the office manager) got in to dispute with the dentist. Before quitting she destroyed my friend's billing records. He used to say he should have pulled her with the line, "Will have sex for dental work."

I believe the little town of Tomales in Northern California still has a token system in operation. I went out with a girl there for awhile and she used tokens at the video store.

Does it involve using small metal discs which hold intrinsic value that you exchange for goods, hmm? It'll never catch on.
