The Grudge was really scary

Unfortunately, I've outgrown being 'sacred' of movies in the fun way, like when you're a kid and you see The Shining and then for weeks you see those twins every time you close your eyes, or when you see Pet Sematary and every car you pass at night on your way home from your friend's house has Paxcow looking out at you, smiling...I'd pay a lot of money for a good nightmare.

But this was genuinely scary, or at least as scary as my adult self could find a modern movie starring Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Jessica nearly shit her pants in the theatre.

Not so much 'psychological' scary, and very little gore, but as the woman so perfectly pointed out, it was "BOO" scary

see it!

I've never been sacred of movies, so I wouldn't know.

You've never watched a sacred movie?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 October 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Ju-On, the movie it was based on (shot-for-shot-the-same-as?) It was great.

Oh wait, I've seen that Pasolini Jesus movie.

Lots of scares per entertainment dollar! more: http://entertainmentcomplex.blognation.us/blog/_archives/2004/11/2/173410.html

Very different from Ju-On 1, but really good.

This movie is much more believable than Lost In Translation. More character development too (ie, just barely a little).

two weeks pass...
The whole scene with the last sister in the empty office building is creepy as fuck, especially when she answers a call from her brother and it's just that burp of doom thing.

The jawbone thing is horrible because you can see it coming a mile off.

I watched Ju-On last night and thought it was a little boring.

Huk-L, Friday, 26 November 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I disliked this film. It committed the worst horror movie crime of being boring. It's just a collection of five minute long creepy scenes followed by a surprise. "Doug...Doug...Doug are you in there?...DOug...Quit playin' games......(Orchestra Stab!) OOOOhhh - a cat (or a phone rings really loudly, or a creepy little kid appears)! The "story" took the premise behind almost every slasher villain (dead villain comes back for revenge) and turned it into a massively drawn out "family secret" style plot that I couldn't give a toss about. It amused me that Geller's character is named "Karen", since she is obviously the new Karen Black.

Just saw this - and you're right, it was really scarey, especially for a Hollywood movie.
What I liked about it was you KNEW when there was a scarey bit about to happen but it always happened in a totally unexpected way (the shower scene was GENIUS!).

three months pass...
this is the REAL lost in translation!

you can outgrow that fear of scary movies? AWESOME. how long does it take?

Maria (Maria), Monday, 28 March 2005 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ju-On totally sucked. All the scary shit happens in daylight. What is that about?

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Monday, 28 March 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It is no "Suicide Club," that's for fucking sure.

(I'm not being facetious here, I promise.)

it's weird how tangible the ghosts are in this movie. most horror movies they spook you into walking into combines and stuff but in the grudge they were just WAILING on people!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 28 March 2005 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I never considered seeing this movie...until now

whatever (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not so great. i did like some things about it though. but it wasn't very scary!

Apparently they are very *tiny* differences. I haven't seen the original so I couldn't say whether that's true or not. The director has filmed this five times now, I think... Not sure about that either. :-) But I'm sure about this: it's hellascary! I loved it! The end had me guessing or rather hoping it wasn't true.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Monday, 28 March 2005 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually preferred the Yank edition but I'm allowed to because they're by the same director.

Not true! Ju-On is a series of 4-5 disconnected shorts, whereas the Grudge features some common thread tying all the stories together (aside from the ghosts).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

This movie was very bland, but had just enough atmosphere. For a week after this girl I work with saw it, we were all leaving messages on her voicemail going "aahgaahgaahggahhg" or whatever that throat noise thingy was.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't anywhere near as scary as I was hoping it would be, that's for sure.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the acting in this movie was terrible. the whole premise was not that interesting. i didn't find it even remotely scary. i have only ever found three movies scary, though. i constantly watch them even though i hate the particular contrivancies and cliches of the horror genre because i do genuinely love to be scared... it's just so infrequent.
