I don't think I've ever thought that way before.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I care so much I said it three times. Not sure what happened there.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

me too - i actually feel physically sick thinking about the prospect of Bush winning, but you should get that thread title seen to miladdo

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Same here. Though the result of the UK 2005 election is somewhat of a foregone conclusion.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, put it this way - I'd rather have had Hague magically win the 2001 election than have Bush win again.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

eew but what if michael howard wins??

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It just doesn't matter as much.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

and it's not going to happen.

(i like the thread title, i'd leave it)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I dunno, we'd get John Redwood running the Department of Deregulation. Has Michael Howard never seen 'Yes, Minister'?

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(ken c xpost)

Or, for that matter, William Hague (just a hunch)?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

do you think it's because we've* got no one to hate at the mo? and bush is an easy target...

*"we've" being some nebulous british left encompassing myself and alba's views

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I can certainly think of several UK politicians worthy of hatred right now, some of whom are actually in power.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone think of any UK politicians who are currently worthy of our respect?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really think of it in relative terms. Quite frankly, I'd even have Thatcher back right now rather than let Bush's lot run America/the World for another four years.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No thanks, that's partly how we ended up with Bush's lot.

The non-appearance of Thatcher thus far in The Power Of Nightmares must be particularly galling to her.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost)

That Welsh alien guy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel the same way, with regards to November 2nd. It seems like one of the most important elections in my lifetime, a choice between two ideologies, one of which could mean a lot of death for many nations.

I'm sure there are politicians who deserve our respect - they probably just don't get much publicity.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely every politically-minded person in Britain who isn't in government or opposition thinks this way?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

but ricky, it's not so easy, for me anyway, to hate any of the current lot. i may disagree with what they're saying, but they can't raise the bile the way thatch/baker/parkinson/tebbitt/howard did...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 28 October 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe not quite to the same extent, no, but my feelings towards Blunkett as Home Secretary aren't that far off from those I had to Howard when he was in that position.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes but Paul Dacre, Richard Littlejohn and Melanie Phillips are politically-minded people.

Overheard in Pond Street, NW3, this morning:

1st lady: "I do hope Bush gets in again."
2nd lady: "I don't agree with the war, but look at the mess this city is in. That's what happens when you let the socialists run things."
1st lady: "No we don't want a socialist President."

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you made that up?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

N., it really was odd about that thread title. But is it mimetic of your panic and intensity?

the bellefox, Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think so, so we'll leave it.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba, we are talking Hampstead here. That was so not made up.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

this is not happening
this is not happening
this is not happening

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's no good covering your ears with Colofac, lad, it's happening whether you vote for it or not.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a huge problem. are national elections supposed to matter this much to people in other countries? i suppose they always have in some way but it shouldn't be this way unless the whole world gets a ballot (that'd be fun).

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That was my idea!

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm starting to feel like this too. That Eminem video makes my giddy with hope.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

me. bah.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Eminem video?

TOMBOT, Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope?

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

eminem - mosh

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks

TOMBOT, Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

This is just... awful.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a lot we can do or say or do, I guess we could vote out Blair, but that's not gonna happen :(

I'm voting Green.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't feel quite as strongly as N. and others as I vividly recall the day after John Major's surprise win in 1992. But yeah, today feels a bit like that day did.

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I was heartbroken in 1992 too. Perhaps I'll post my diary entry about it...

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(but like it or not, Britain no longer has the impact on the world that America does. That's why it matters more. Plus Bush is a hell of a lot worse than Major)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

this is true for me as well, and its not just because i see the labour party winning again in nz next year, its because american politics have a really huge impact on the world.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

as a canadian, i've felt this way for a long time

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No arguments there, N. But I was perhaps reading the question differently to the way you intended. I can't pretend to feel the pain in the same way as most US ILXers are feeling it right now (or how I would feel if I'd had a vote yesterday).

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Do post the diary entry, Alba.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Not just now.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)
