Does anything matter?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That's irrelevant!

...and yet another thread of mine dies an early death.

depends on who writes them of course, but it surely means something that when studios have really bad films they refuse to make them available for preview screenings.

Film reviews matter to the extent that people listen to them - they can kill a good film and hype a bad one, and vice versa. They don't matter to the art itself - your favourite film would still be so even if every critic panned it. But film reviews can be art in themselves, great writing, so they matter as much as any other art does.

I would rarely read any movie review and take any notice of it, generally as a rule I'll go watch a film based on whether I think it would be something I would enjoy and then judge for myself.

I agree with the 'too snooty' remark made in the article btw.

Movie "reviews" mean very little, but movie "criticism" can be as interesting and illuminatory and inquisitive as literary criticism.

take it from me, the answer to the question is no

I used to write them for (sadly now defunct) 6degrees.co.uk I don't think mine mattered one jot. Gave me the chance to see films early, eat vol-au-vents and meet Paul Gambuccini, though.

Hmm.
