OK I shd be sleeping thr sleep of the just, but i learned something possibly awful at work which i can only kind of skate round - but sort of sharing may at least pop it out of my buzzing head for the moment. my new boss = OK and i like her a lot; my old boss = a very good friend (and neighbour) recently left and at (soon-to-be-legal) daggers drawn w.management. nu-boss told me something abt management's interp'n of old boss's actions which, if she is right, imply he has been v.stupid, and may soon be in deep trouble. in fact i find this hard to believe (in a battle of wits w.management, old boss wd be streets ahead): i hope and trust it is management which is being stupid, but i can no longer tell where my analysis of the sitch is being undermined by my loyalty to a friend's judgment. Cd not get hold of him this evening to pass on info (and allow him to calm MY nerves?!): hence wide awake at three in morning w. a workday tomorrow...

(last monday, just as i prepared to send off a raft of emails looking for work, i was told that the guardian had laid off ALL its freelance subs: ie MY market = suddenly all clogged up w.newbies pah bah, so i sent no emails instead)

gazing at this in the cold light of day I realise that the unasked question = have you ever been told a secret so BIG that you HAD to pass it on for fear of yr head exploding? (above = not really this, hence all vagued up: sorry)

Yes.

But I'm not passing it on any further.

No. I can keep secrets. Including that one about a hitman I know...

Jeez, that's my life every day. Lately, certain people at the office have taken to bitching about our poor old director who recently died of scleroderma.

Mm, I have a few. They will stay that way.

ok finally got to talk to old boss ("why you no return my emails" "oh i have not looked at MY emails for two days" "grrr")

my judgment of old boss's judgment = good ie he is not A TOTAL FOOL w/a court appearance pending HOWEVER this means management are lying to my nu-boss big time OR (which is kinda worse) so dumm they actually believe what they are spreading around.

Of course one day I will write my memoirs and this will all be very hilarious.

working out the roman-a-clef correspondences of this thread's title to your story is twisting my pore hed into corkscrews. i keep coming back to the cowping it part (symbolically, you know). but that's just how i am. i am sorry you have to endure the trashing of a good man's name. it is no good.
