Point out a good watering hole in NYC

The only hitch is it has to be on the Upper East Side, say in the 50s so I don't have to walk much or take the subway/cab. I haven't been to New York in 4-5 years, and all my previous imbibing has never been anywhere in that vicinity. But my accomodations dictate that Friday's post-work shuffle must be spent nearby, so if you know of a place up there that has a good juke...oh, and if there's a good record store in that area, even better.

don carville weiner, Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

don't be a sissy - take the subway to 8th st / astor place, and go to Grassroots. It's usually empty, always affordable, and literally right next door to Kims Underground, probably the best record store in NYC

If you're at Dojo's, you've gone too far

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

what kind of place do you want? and is its location (50s) or identity (Upper East Side) more important? (most would probably say the UES begins at 57th at the lowest; I might place it as high as the low-to-mid-60s.)

for now, I'll recommend PJ Clarke's at 55th and 3d. very New York.

I don't think there are any record stores of any kind remotely close to there.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"good juke" may specify a kind of bar hard to come by in that neighborhood

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Subway Bar, is that the name of it? By Bloomingdales?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(Though not a good juke, a major dive.)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what I was going to say. it's very New York in a very different sense. (xpost)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not afraid of going downtown and have done it many times. And will do it on Saturday. I just like to drop a bunch of money on music and then celebrate with a drink or three.

UES (and in that, not too far Upper) since I'm staying in the mid50s within a block or two from the Park. I don't really wanna spend a lot of time walking or riding to get some drinks...unless someone else is buying (so Gabbneb if your tab is running someplace, I'll make sure to get there.)

don carville weiner, Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw John Olson last time I was at grassroots.. maybe he'll be there again tonight

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahah yeah i was the one who told him about that place. everyone i tell about it ends up going there and claiming they discovered it! hahahahaa

he won't be there though - they're on tour - west coast, i think

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

they're here tonight homey! gonna go rock to the killer jams. expect a full report on the noize board between 1-2 am.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

well, you're in Midtown. most of the notable places will be an after-work scene and heavy with bank-type people. do you want it to be young and vibrant? old and clubby? relaxed but cool? or do you want to avoid this as much as possible?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

pj clarke's is one building away from where I work! mid fifties on the east side is generally a black hole of overpriced crappy food and boringness.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

but maybe bliss bar (on 53rd? and 2nd) or mica bar (on 51st b/n 2nd & 3rd). Both will be packed.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i think theres a gay bar called oscar wilde somewhere up there

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Bnw, let's meet at PJ Clark's! I've never been.

Not to be a dick or nothin', but the 50's is midtown, not the Upper East Side.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

no dickness taken Alex, but if I would have said mid-50s what part of town is that? (I was perplexed about how to address this, actually, since I knew it wasn't the UES but it certainly didn't seem like Midtown. So if I was going to err then I wanted to err going towards the legitmate UES than down the other way.)

most of the notable places will be an after-work scene and heavy with bank-type people. do you want it to be young and vibrant? old and clubby? relaxed but cool? or do you want to avoid this as much as possible?

I don't want to go to a scenester place, and don't really dig most banker types. Relaxed but cool or hole in the wall is more my style anymore. I don't want to be elbows-to-assholes and have to fight for a drink. Just want to throw a few back...will PJ's be a mad scene or what? I'll probably be drinking from 5-7pm.

(And I like how I refer to scheduled drinking time. Very mature of me.)

don carville weiner, Friday, 29 October 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I grew up and lived up on the Upper East Side until i moved downtown in `96. Most of the bars/watering holes that I preferred up there are either gone or changed into different incarnations. I quite liked Ryan's Daughter on 85th, just West of 1st Avenue, but that was when they had a proper 7" playing jukebox. The Gaf on 85th and 2nd wasn't bad, but I believe that was later subsumed by neighboring Fitzpatrick's on the corner. Dorian's Red Hand has always been and will always be a bad idea. There were some alright-if-uninspired places north of 86th street, but i haven't ventured up there for drinks since the mid-90's. I remember a shitty dive somewhere in the 70's called Iggy's (semi-notorious for a karaoke night) that was endearingly ramshackle, but not sureif it's still there. My advice would be to either go cross town to the Upper West Side, or simply go downtown. Regardless of whatever rennaissance may have occurred since i de-camped, the Upper East Side (and lower into the 60's and 50's) has never been a wellspring of character or mystique. You drink in those bars because time doesn't permit you to travel elsewhere. Beyond that, there is no reason.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 October 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You drink in those bars because time doesn't permit you to travel elsewhere. Beyond that, there is no reason.

Exactly. Which is, basically, why I figured if there actually was a good place to have a few pops in this hood, someone on ILX would know of it. You know, kind of hoping there was a hidden gem someplace. So I guess I'll darken the doorway of PJs unless someone says it's going to be a clusterfuck, in which case I may just head downtown.

don carville weiner, Friday, 29 October 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

fun fact about the grassroots tavern: they make their own bloody mary mix.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"the 50s" is Midtown. the upper east side, if you have to draw a line, probably begins at 59th or 60th, though the area from 57th to as high as 68th, depending on the avenue, is really sort of an ambiguous in-between zone.

PJ's may well be a clusterfuck, i'm not sure. the web site.

i don't think I know of the kind of place you're looking for in that neighborhood. they're not that kind of place, really, but I'll mention two notable, but quite expensive hotel bars, in separate hotels at 55th and 5th - the King Cole bar in the St. Regis (SE corner) and the bar at the Peninsula (NE corner). the former is historic; the latter is supposed to be notable for the outdoor (above ground-level) section, though it may well rain at that hour.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

fun fact about the King Cole bar: the bloody mary was invented there (well, ok, it was brought there from Paris, but not in the form we know it)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

My wife stays at the Peninsula on occasion and that bar isn't my scene. I've heard of the St. Regis, probably not what I'm up for.

Why would a bar have a website? That definitely is a sign of impending clusterfuck. Hmm.

Deciding where to get a drink should not ever require this much thought.

don carville weiner, Friday, 29 October 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I really think you should go here

http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/11349653/new_york_ny/subway_inn.html?cslink=search_name_cust&ulink=search__searchslot1_520__1_profile_5_1

(looks like there is a juke box after all)

As for record stores in the area, I think you'll be reduced to one of the chains...Tower at Lincoln Center maybe?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 October 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, I've been in there. I was having a beer and two guys came in, obviously just having finished work. They were eating hotdogs and put Born To Run on the jukebox. It was my perfect image of urban America.

Adam Faithless (Adam Faithless), Friday, 29 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Subway might be a winner given that description Mary. Plus, it now looks as though I am drinking solo, so the only person I need to please is me. Still better, I'm staying farther uptown than I'd originally known, so that place is right around the corner.

Thanks to all for the tips--I owe you a drink if you darken the doorway of Subway.

don carville weiner, Friday, 29 October 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, the Subway Inn is GREAT!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 October 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they have Killing Joke on the jukebox, Alex?

don carville weiner, Friday, 29 October 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Subway Inn's just a few blocks from my new apartment, I walk past it all the time, I should stop for a beer some night. Is that where all the Bloomingdale's people go to drink after work and bitch about Christmas shoppers?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 29 October 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

No, you won't find too many Bloomies people in there. God, I need a drink. Bnw, where are you?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 October 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

bnw (bnw), Friday, 29 October 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll try, but I'm on a VV computer that cannot handle the meager things I am now requiring of it.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 October 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

doh, how long are you there?

bnw (bnw), Friday, 29 October 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Until 7.30 and AIM seems to have been surreptitiously removed my "work station." Feel free to inform me via this forum of your plans to go drinking with C.P. in W'burg.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 October 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

M, where can you get japanese knee socks in NY?

Carey (Carey), Friday, 29 October 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Rusu soksu? I think you can find a fascimile at the sock man. Otherwise, I am sure I have seen them somewhere, oh, maybe, one of the althetic chains, that one in Union Square? They are basically huge sports socks.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 October 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they have Killing Joke on the jukebox, Alex?

-- don carville weiner (migg...), October 29th, 2004. (later)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd be exceptionally surprised if Killing Joke could be found on any jukebox north of 14th street.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 October 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Official report: no Killing Joke on the juke. The jukebox there was surburban, as I think noted upthread. There was a Radiohead mix CD that was probably the most current, but I don't think there was anything post-OK Computer on it. Some moron played "Rapper's Delight" twice while I was in that song. I hate that song. They also played "Down Under" and the other Men At Work song. Hate both of those, too.

The bar is a total dive. The bathroom was right out of "Trainspotting." Really vile, the kind of place that would tempt shitting in your pants rather than perform a touch-free balancing act and wiping with your hand. But if you don't have the trots then it is a very convenient place to get loaded. (I apologize about the scatalogical aspects but it seemed relevant at the time.)

Beers are $4, nothing on tap. The crowd was mixed, a few suits but mostly not. I didn't make it in there until about 6:30pm but stayed until about 8:30 and business was steady. Very easy place to get a drink. They have the video golf game, can't think of the name (Tee Time 2004 or some shit.) No food, but hey--Subway is next door to Subway Inn.

Went to PJ's after that on Friday, got there around 9:30pm or whatever. Eating area in the back with menu and full. Nice old school bar populated by suits who were drunk from after work. Probably would be a mad scene after work, and was still fairly full when we rolled in. Good bartender, but otherwise non-distinct.

Also had drinks at the Library at the Regency and that place in the Peninsula. Avoid them unless you are in the mood for $13 glasses of Dewar's.

don carville weiner, Monday, 1 November 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The last time I went to the Subway Bar, it was this summer prior to seeing Devo in Central Park. Never made it to the jukebox, as there was some woman badly air-guitaring to G'n'R in front of it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn you. I'm actually supposed to be at an LES birthday party tonight anyway, so the Cat presence is only a partial draw.

one year passes...
revive, in honor of my expedition next week.

this time, however, I'm staying with my boy Donald so I need something on the UWS. Same rules as before: I prefer more hole-in-the-wall types of places with a good juke rather than a hipster place or stuffy place. Said joint needs to be within a max of 6 blocks if possible as I do not want to be getting in a cab or go for some long walk just to get a nip. Also, if it makes a difference, I'll be there during the week (Mon-Thurs.) I think I'm going to see Rob Dickinson on Wednesday at the Mercury Lounge, so any good places down that way are appreciated.

don weiner (don weiner), Thursday, 23 February 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

I fell in love with Rudy's during my time living in NYC in '97-'98. Trump is at Columbus Circle, right, so the walk isn't too far to 9th in the mid-40s. $1.50 cans of Schaffer, free hot dogs, alcoholic old-timers drinking vodka with milk, and somehow the place was not overrun with h1psters despite. (But my info is 8 yrs old)

Are there actual dives in the UWS proper? I'm curious.

Aaron A, Thursday, 23 February 2006 02:26 (twenty years ago)

ha i didn't even read the quip on the link I provided -- operation compromised, apparently.

Aaron A, Thursday, 23 February 2006 02:33 (twenty years ago)

again, Don, you have to work on your geography - you're barely at the foot of the UWS here, and there isn't much in the way of bars in the next 6 blocks north. so go South into Midtown West - I think the Ye Olde Tripple Inn will fit the bill nicely. 263 West 54th St b/w Bway and 8th.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 February 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but that's kind of my point gabbneb (and it was the same point as upthread)...that area doesn't seem like it would have a place I would like, so I'm hoping that someone knows of a dive (I wouldn't have expected a loveable shithole like the Subway Inn to be only a few blocks from the Regency, for example) or, actually, anything but the Trump bar. Sorry about my geography but a) I don't live there, b) I haven't drank there regularly in years, and c) if my hotel is in Midtown or some other more accurate descriptor, let me know.

That said, Ye Olde Tripple Inn looks like a good pick. I will toast you Gabbneb.

don weiner (don weiner), Thursday, 23 February 2006 03:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm just trash-talking. I don't think Columbus Circle really belongs to any neighborhood. You've got a toe in the UWS, yes. And no, it's not quite Midtown. Central Park South is sort of a distinct place, and this is the Western limit.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 February 2006 04:48 (twenty years ago)

I need a suggestion for a hole around midtown/sth Central Park way for the end of March. otherwise its taxi time to downtown
