So, Americans and others in London, how are you planning to watch the election?

...if at all. I've been thinking about what to do on the evening of November 2nd, and someone I know mentioned going along to this:
http://www.ica.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=13653

Although the comfort of my own couch and TV and house is seductive, the idea that I might wake up my neighbor and her tiny baby by shouting at the TV in the middle of the night kind of argues in favor of watching this in a bar. And it would be nice to have company.

So, what are your plans?

sgs (sgs), Friday, 29 October 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

from behind the sofa

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 29 October 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in Tokyo, and I'm trying to figure out what to do. There's a national holiday on Wednesday, which is Tuesday in the U.S., so that works out nicely.

supercub, Friday, 29 October 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

What time will it really start to get going. Surely not much will happen until 4am. I am up for excitement.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 29 October 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That's handy (xpost to Tokyo). I don't have anything to do on Wednesday either, so I figure I'll be staying awake a long time.

My sofa, unfortunately, is up against a wall.

Pete, I'm trying to remember what happened last time--snippets of Dan Rather's incredible metaphors are coming back, but it seems like the state-by-state results will start coming in earlier than that? I have no idea what time the polls even start closing anywhere.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 29 October 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i have booked wednesday off. meg was talking about going to bed early (quiet at the back), then getting up at 4 ish and staying up, i'm not too sure about this, but my recent attempts at staying up for baseball have been pathetic at worst...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 29 October 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

('that' meaning 4am our time. Now I'm remembering the whole election day 2000--voting at the end of my street in Chicago, the feeling of lovely enfranchisement, the eating of waffles at the Golden Waffle house with roommates, and then the descent into appalled disbelief as the day wore on.)

xpost, yeah my attempts at early rising are historically unsuccessful except when I have to catch a plane. I'll be staying awake I think.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 29 October 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking into a venue with cable/satellite/News 24 and am taking the 3rd off. Ed may, of course, have fixed our Freeview box by then.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i think results start coming in about 2am-- most polls close at 8pm.

i was planning on watching at home. i've got cable, so i've got cnn. i saw something in time out about a big party somewhere that sounded at bit OTT, but the ICA sounds kind of nice, actually.

hmm. will see how healthy i feel then, i think.

also, it was so cool! i was reviewing my schedule with boss2, and he said 'why don't you work from home on wednesday...i'd imagine you're going to have a late night on tuesday?'

so nice!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't have to be in work until 3 o'clock or so on the wednesday, so i guess i'll either stay up late/get up early to follow it.

the ICA is presumably only going on til 1, right? so before any of the results start coming in. i quite fancy that, though. but then i always fancy going to the ica bar.

my memory of last time (very vague) is that the results mostly came in between 3am and 6am. does that sound plausible? i was listening on the radio and drifiting in and out of sleep, so my perception of time was probably a bit skewed.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

If the court challenges and recounts carry on like they did last time around that's going to be one long-ass session at the ICA. Laurie Taylor's going to need a snack or two to keep her going, it'll be like David Blaine all over again! "And eh.. we have an update from Ohio.. 213 votes struck off in Columbus" *fingernails grow*

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the's the loveliest hunch i've ever seen. personally i'm worried sick about it all and fearing the worst, but that's worked before...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(xposts with tracer) I was told by my friend who's going that the ICA thing is continuing all night...but he may've been guessing at that, he didn't seem too convinced. I will try to investigate further.

Even if the bar sojourn ends before the results are in, or I decide I'd rather stay up all night at home and wake up my neighbor's child with any yelling, I'd also like the excuse of going to the ICA for a little while. So Fancy An Election Toby and anyone else?

sgs (sgs), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the ica thing looks fun actually, i could be tempted. it also means my week next week looks like this:

monday: riverside studios
tuesday: ica
wednesday: royal opera house
(thursday: coventry, it was going so well as well...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

> (The thing is, I have a hunch that Kerry's going to blow Bush out of the water)

i can see the headlines in the paper the next day:
'It was the Guardian wot won it!'

Laurie Taylor's going to need a snack or two to keep her going

i could be wrong, but isn't laurie taylor the really annoying *man* who presents "thinking allowed" (ugh) on radio 4?

the ica's sounding good. i've just realised that i'm going out to lunch (anchor & hope, mmm) with my flatmate on tuesday, so i'll try not to be too inebriated by the evening.

maybe i should not bother trying to get back onto uk time before tuesday, and just stay on eastern time for a couple of days? or maybe that's a bad idea.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the ica sounds good-ish, but the commentary aspect makes me nervous. i don't want "experts" yammering at me about the american political process.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I am up for the ICA, but only if it really does go on until the results come in properly.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i suppose as it's effectively a members club, normal opening hours wouldn't necessarily need to be followed (although i imagine they'd have to stop with the bouze).

i was confused by the pf's link, i was thinking "what's a bad news dog?"

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, i can imagine laurie taylor harshing my buzz somewhat. perhaps someone should do a stevem and phone ahead to see how late they're going to be open?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone know if normal terrestrial UK channels will be covering events as they unfold? Or do you need clever sky/news24 type things?

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The ICA sounds BAD. I would not touch it with a dusty bargepole.

Anyway, how can I make a proper analysis of the results without wee Isobel to help me make sense of it all?

the bellefox, Friday, 29 October 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

to not have late rolling coverage on terrestrial BBC would be madness given the relevance and magnitude (this time a lot more than last time)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm up for joining in the fun - I'm not sure about the timings though. When will the results start happening UK TIME? Should I try and take the morning off work?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Britain leave summer time this week? At 2am, the first states' polls will close, those in Eastern time zones, and in all but the closest races there'll be projections from exit polls (this includes Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio). 3am sees the Central zones (Chicago etc), 4am Mountain (Denver) and 5am Western (LA/Seattle). If we are LUCKY there should be some idea of a clear winner by 6am.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the potential for chaos is at least the same as last time if not a lot higher right?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

higher (and it's not merely potential, either)

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't chaotic things already started happening? like those 58,000 ballot papers disappearing into the wilds of Florida. and regardless of whether fishiness occurs, you just know that both sides will be getting the lawyers out for any close result...

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am up for the ICA, but only if it really does go on until the results come in properly.

When will the results start happening UK TIME? Should I try and take the morning off work?

what suzy said. stuff'll start coming in at 2, and rolling in, district by district until it's over. if there's irregularities, it could be worse than last time, yes. (i remember being at a dems victory party in a warehouse in chicago until about 7am, we kept saying 'another half hour and we'll know FOR SURE')

i'll try to find out what this other thing was that i read about. although i suspect that the people at the ICA might be less annoying than the people at the other thing.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

blimey, there's a group of people more annoying than people who frequent ica?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 29 October 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

there are supposedly going to be parties up and down the UK, details of which will be posted here

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 29 October 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i have to say...as much as i love d3mocrats abr0ad, i couldn't face those people for an entire night. i think sgs could get my back here, since we went to the primary election thingy here, and it was semi painful. we got in trouble for drinking too much wine and actually HAVING FUN. we were shushed for giggling in the back corner. jeez.

then again, that's the london bunch only. could be a better (less serious) bunch elsewhere.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 29 October 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm having a little shindig. We're having snacks and cheesecake and drinks and a pitcher of poison kool-aid just in case.

Kenan, Friday, 29 October 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

But I'm not in london. I'm just saying, it's a good idea.

Kenan, Friday, 29 October 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the ica sounds good-ish, but the commentary aspect makes me nervous. i don't want "experts" yammering at me about the american political process.

Me too, Lauren...I would rather not feel like I'm in a lecture or something, this is what made me hesitate initially. I have a hunch that there will be quite a lot of interaction with/among the crowd--not so much speeches etc.--more like giving people a forum to yell at the TV if they want. Maybe I'm being optimistic though, since I know not of the people hosting. In any case I'd rather sit at the back so I don't get shushed like Colette and I did--I'll back her up on the D.A. characterization up there. (I was all, why are we the only people in this gigantic crowd who thought to bring in a drink? You're in a different country now! Have fun, blend in, Americans! I felt kind of badass with my wine. And I am so not a badass.)

Anyway I've done a stevem, and here's what they told me: it'll cost the price of a day membership to get in, so £1.50, and it goes on until 3am. The nice lady couldn't tell me a schedule for the evening's "debates and talks in with the broadcast" as she phrased it.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 29 October 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the dullness tip-off colette and sgs, i suspected those "parties" might be a bit that

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 29 October 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

not that i'll be there anyway, i'll be listening to france 3 and eventually going to sleep and then turning it back on again because the morning papers won't know yet!?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 29 October 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I could work on theory that if riots don't break out, Kerry has won.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 29 October 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

well, the upshot was that we were so 'wild' (by this i mean actually talking quietly and laughing a little bit), that the newspaper photographers were following us around for a lot of the night. ha. we're so 'zany'

xpost-- oh, am home now, here's a link to the other thing i'd seen in time out. http://www.electionpartyuk.com/

colette (a2lette), Friday, 29 October 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I may very well hike on out to a motel in Connecticut and avoid absolutely everything that day.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 October 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, this is a thread for people in London. Sorry.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 October 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

aw that's ok mike, come and see us again next tuesday :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 29 October 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenan (kenan), Friday, 29 October 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That Yahoo article Pinefox linked not has a nuts conclusion from Ken Khachigian, who theoretically should be smarter about it:

Khachigian said the Bush White House should counterattack vigorously.

"I'm not going to second-guess what they're doing, but I'd encourage the president to be very aggressive, and it would be to his political advantage to lay the strap to Kerry," Khachigian said. Specifically, Bush should step up his denunciations of Kerry for whipping up the missing-explosives affair, Khachigian said.

Ridiculous. Keeps it more in the public eye even when earlier statements this week are now clearly rendered 'inoperative,' as it were.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 October 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

don't be, always nice to be kept abreast of the sneaky motel exploits of Mr Daddino...

so, any more thoughts? my body clock is really confused, so i'm considering some hybrid plan of going to the ica earlyish, then going home for a nap, then getting up at around 4am. but this may be madness.

incidentally, anyone thinking of going to the ica at the start of the evening should consider going to see the john bock exhibition:

http://www.ica.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=13673

i think it's only open until 7:30, but it's well worth seeing. easily the most fun i've ever had in an art gallery.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pub quizzing early and then staying up all night with my flatmates I think (I have been drilled to make pancakes and shit with ver syrup and ver bacon at 5am and we have much top hole Belgian beer in so an all nighter it is).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

John Bock is wicked. When Nick was here a few weeks back, we spent HOURS in the exhibition, mostly in the little haybale fort.

I'm really NOT interested in going to the ICA for this, basically because cannot smoke Class C and shout at the television, not even there.

If it's good news on the night (or the early morning) I say those in town should meet in the morning at Smith of Smithfield or something.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, if the ICA thing goes ahead I'd have to go to Kingston to watch the footie, then come back into London at like 10pm and join everyone. Sounds tricky.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

My word... I didn't realise Michael Gove, as immortalised in this thread, was going to be there. Shout nasty things at him, please.

It is very unlikely I'll be able to make this as I've been given a very large and unpleasant work-related task that will take up the entire week, and staying up all night is not really an option.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to sleep lots tomorrow daytime, then go to a gig in the evening, before ending up in my friend's flat and watching it until I fall over. Then stumble to a 10am lecture before going back to bed.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

thinking about it, staying up all night seems more realistic than trying to get up at 4am after going to bed early. but that will just compound misery further if GWB wins, so i'm really stuck for what to do here.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to be busy at home dissolving my xanax into extra-strength hot toddies.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I have taken Wednesday off, so barring unpleasant work developments will be staying up all night. Given my extreme rubbishness at doing this nowadays, I will likely take a nap early evening to make sure I don't flake out at 3am.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Gonna watch Celtic crash out of Europe and then Bush win the election - after that I may kill myself

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

just remembered that i have my work AGM tomorrow night. so i have to schmooze (and perhaps give a spontaneous talk with the person that's speaking-- he's mentioned that he wants to do this. ick) and drink crappy wine and that means i won't have time for a nap before coming out to play.

if i come to the ICA, i may be in the disguise of princess crabbypants. i may also be dressed like a grown up. i'm not sure how the two are related.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to sleep lots tomorrow daytime, then go to a gig in the evening, before ending up in my friend's flat and watching it until I fall over. Then stumble to a 10am lecture before going back to bed.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i have also been in SERIOUS TRAINING for this by staying up til 2am playing GTA. in fact i may move the little telly into the lounge and play GTA whilst watching the election coverage...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

In my underwear w/ a bottle of gin and a 12 gauge in my lap. Same way I watch "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "Ellen".

bnw (bnw), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so my plans to go to this are looking iffy but oh well, looks like I'd be there on my own anyhow. I've scheduled an important meeting for Wednesday at 4(pm), and I've got to be well-rested and prepared for it, which probably means watching the late-night happenings at home. Although, I'd still be up for drinks (ICA or elsewhere) Tuesday evening if anyone else fancies it. The Bock sounds fun. As does the meal that Pete will cook.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i think i would be up for meeting for drinks at like 9 or somthing, staying out for a while, and getting home in time to allow me to start swearing at the TV at 2am in the comfort of my own living room.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

But won't the actual result take a long time to be decided?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

if things go smoothly, they should be able to call it by 7 or 8, right? of course, that's assuming there's no hanging chads or whatever.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

right, i think i'm going to go to the ica at half seven (or pehaps a bit earlier, i might go to john bock again) to watch "Uncovered: The War on Iraq":

http://www.ica.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=13569

and build up some righteous anger before going to the bar at nine. i probably won't stay much past eleven, though.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

my biological clock is still completely out of whack owing to the world series, so I plan to take a nap at 11pm and hopefully should awaken at 4am-ish

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Monday, 1 November 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. This is going to be at more or less exactly the same time as my radio programme. I sense that I will lose.

I have to work at 8am (and sit through an appraisal), so now I am thinking - go to sleep at 9-10pm, wake at 4am and stay up from then. This may not work, of course.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

...or perhaps i won't bother with the ica, if no-one else is? guess we'll see tomorrow.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Toby, I'll be there. You, me, Colette at 9ish?, random people I know from my course, and anyone else?

I should arrive b/t 8 and 9 I think--I'm planning to go to a lecture near Russell Square that begins at 6:30 (if I can get in) and will head down afterwards. (It's about medieval books and I have no idea how long it will last.) I doubt I'll stay longer than 11.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

tallest fap ever?

staying at home for me i think :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, the plan to get into work late today already hasn't happened - I was up at 7:20 with a day of frustratingly tedious remedial work on various projects ahead of me and a trip to Orpington to pick up an eBay win this evening. I doubt I can make it to 6am without flaking out.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, we could have a new president in like 19 hours!

i'm still up for the ICA, think sgs' (oh god the apostrophes with your name, sarah!) idea is a good one. i should be able to make the ICA by 9, and stay till 11 or so. i just feel really removed from the whole thing, and think sitting with a load of people that actually care will help get me in the spirit.

except that when i get away from the removed feeling, i start to get so nervous. eeek.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

What did you win, Mike? I thought that read "Oregon" at first. I got a pair of jeans from ebay in yesterday's post and as soon as I tried them on it was clear they were gurls jeans. Still, my arse looked great.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Where can you buy US flags 'cos if Kerry wins I'm gonna be out in the street a-hoopin' and a-hollerin'

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the 'novelty' shop on upper street in islington (preposterous presents?) sells them, i discovered before the march when the shrub was here last year.

hmm. maybe i should bring out my modified holographic peacesign american flag again. (it's not as cool as it sounds, but could be if i could only find shiny holographic sticky fabric or something, rather than paper)

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently PlANET HOLLYWOOD is staying open til 6am for this, if you can deal with it...

I might be along to the ICA tonight, but again, not staying later than 11ish.

i've managed to not get enough sleep again, so i'm going to take a nap later and maybe not go to the iraq film. but i'll be in the bar by 9, so i'll see people there.

Mark: Oh, it was just an Ikea desk for about a quarter of the in-store price (part of the ongoing reorganisation of our flat to accommodate you-know-what). This means I'll be offline for an hour or so as I sort out the new home for the PC - it'll be good to be distracting myself with something domestic and mundane when the day I've been worrying about for months is finally upon us.

BBC has a good guide to poll closing times and the like: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3760822.stm

The worst case scenario in my mind right now is that I decide to stay up all night to watch the election, and by 7am it is still too close to call, no clear lead emerges for 48 hours by which point they decide that Bush has won anyway.

That sounds about right

I really should read new messages properly before posting.

Actually my sodding ICA membership might have expired, again. Knackers. How much is a days membership wotsit, or I might just renew if prices haven't gone up again.

I will not be watching this. I'll be trying to forget about it as best I can until Wednesday morning by which time I pray for a clear Kerry win. I couldn't cope with a repeat of last time, when I stayed up long enough to feel certain that Bush had lost, before waking up next day to find he had probably won. That was when my detestation of Bush and all he stands for, considerable though it was, was a fraction of what it is now.

frankiemachine, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahem. I am ashamed. It expired on 31 December 2003. That says something about my cultural goings on this year to date, don't it!

I don't think I'm going to get any TV coverage here in Japan, or at least not up-to-minute coverage. Any recommedations for the best site to constantly push F5 at?

It's interesting from the BBC's timetable that we may have a strong indication of how it's all going as early as midnight-1am: how close the Virginias are, if the exit polls point to a clear winner in Ohio, etc.

In my ideal scenario, around 1:45am the exit polls for FL, PA, NH, OH and AR are so bad for GWB that he waits only for the coup de grace from MN and NM half an hour later to pick up that phone. Then I could go to bed.
