Does anyone use this expression anymore? I don't think I've heard it in a while.

I only say soi-disant.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 29 October 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course it's still used, Mr Sundar so-called Subramanian! (Actually I don't think I've heard it in ages.)

i am referred to in familiar circles as "the so-called daz". i don't know why, it's a pretty clunky sobriquet.

What's odd is that the first time around, when I was in high school and thus a target of the show, I thought it was an awful name, so pandering and overtly mock-ditzy. Now, it seems not only perfectly evocative of its era but also kind of apt and meaningful, and charmingly quaint.

alanis' latest album to thread!

I use it a lot. It's good to say after something unambiguous. "Spades, huh? So-called... spades."

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 30 October 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost Oh crap I didn't even realize that.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 30 October 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean I didn't even know what it was (so-)called until you posted that.

'so-called' is more of an expression to call into question the quality attributed. or something.

ie- the hours is a so-called oscar quality movie. i have described it thus because, although oscar-quality has been attributed to this stinking pile of cum-muck-existential-whining-tough-to-be-a-woman/man/ed harris-hackneyed-weepie-shit, i wouldn't really agree with this. so.

So-called got replaced by air quotes. Air quotes got replaced by emoticons. Emoticons got replaced by *asterisks*. Or maybe (parentheses). Or italics?
