REMEMBER: movies, albums, whatever that had a lasting influence on you...except you CAN'T remember MUCH about them

the resurrection of the Chris MArker thread and Stewart Osbornes comments on the Cure's "killing an Arab" made me think...i LOVED something...can't remember why.

is it important to reassess these things?

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 30 October 2004 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The song(s) from Hair that are something like "White boys are so pretty...something something something" and "Black boys are delicious...something something love...they satisfy my tummy" ??

I did a lot of thinking about these lyrics when I was a wee tot, but I don't remember what the lyrics are at all. Or how they go melodically. I was so confused and intrigued by them.

i'm often thinking "yes yes i love that" whent things are mentioned on ilx...then i have nothing to say. or i think i should recommend something but i'm not sure if i still like it.

gem (trisk), Sunday, 31 October 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yes indeed.

bulbs (bulbs), Sunday, 31 October 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i can remember random passages from ulysses, some of them are my favourite bits of prose in the world. but i can't remember a great deal of the novel as a whole. despite having read it twice and studied at uni.

gem (trisk), Sunday, 31 October 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes i find that on revisiting these things they are VERY familiar. i remember them. i wonder if they slip out of my memory because they don't/didn't (for me, at time of experiencing) have a "meta" or critical frame around them to reduce them to a succint understanding?

bulbs (bulbs), Sunday, 31 October 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

no, wait...i think it might be the exact OPPOSITE.

bulbs (bulbs), Sunday, 31 October 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know if they slip out of your memory at all. only your most immediately accessible memory perhaps.... i would say because there is a finite amount of room in there and you use it for more important day to day things, that's all. however i have no explanation for why i can remember some other things in vivid detail, that i may not have read or seen or heard for many years. why do those things adhere to your brain cells better tahn others? i don't know that it is due to a succinct understanding, some of them are quite complex. but a critical frame of reference could potentially be the key i suppose.

gem (trisk), Sunday, 31 October 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, true. i was wondering if a critical "frame" actually means i might not have devoted much attention to the "object" at all.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers = super creepy. Aah Donald Sutherland, why the long face?

Captain Obvious, Sunday, 31 October 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

E.M. Forster's "The Longest Journey" and that Sartre play about the dirty hands both featured main characters that I could relate to a lot, and the fact that they both fuck up royally taught me a lot. But I can't remember quite what, nor how they fuck up, nor indeed much of anything beyond the stuff that I've mentioned.

There was some cartoon on in the late 80s that had some sort of young blonde male protagonist, pirate ships, some sort of amulet or medallion or something that shot a beam of light to wherever they were supposed to go next. I remember so little, except for the few images BURNED into my mind's eye. I think there was some kind of pet monkey too.

Whatever that is I think I saw it too. Captain something?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The Narnia books. I loved them, and read them loads. But I havn't read them since I was a nipper, so can't remember them at all. I have love, but no reason.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved "V," (in fact) read it twice. All I remember of it now is part of it took place in Malta, and there was a character called Benny Profane. In high school I was obsessed with the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four for some reason.

king_oliver (king_oliver), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Choose Your Own Adventure books--I can never remember what adventure I chose.

I loved "The Great Gatsby" when I read it in high school. Now I can't remember anything except the basic storyline.

Because it is stupidly overrated.
