What is the longest-serving piece of clothing in your wardrobe?

Tom, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a black ,short-sleeved ballerina cardigan that i have had since I was eight.

rainy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i see no reason why my pampers shd not see me out

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never thrown away a pair of trainers since I was about 15, and I still wear some that are over ten years old, so them probably, a pair of Adidas old school running shoes.

chris, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well the jumper I am wearing today used to be my mum's before she renounced horizontal stripes for good. So that must be quite old. Other than this I have so many clothes I don't have time to wear half of them and once I have worn something about 3 times I am bored of it.

Emma, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Black polo neck jumper makes many appearances, although it has had replacements but in a seemless continuity conveyor belt of ponceyness

there is a (fake) fur coat which has served me well but i'd left it at my parents house for some reason, and seems to transform into an object of interest for people. unfortunately, apropros of nothing, my mum decided to mail it to New Jersey.

gareth, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My M&S blue cardigan...it has massive holes in the elbows. I feel so grunge when I wear it.

james, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The black velvet bias-cut sheath gown worn by my maternal grandmother for her high school graduation in 1937. This dress is one of the most beautiful objects EVER in the history of the world and I promise I am not exaggerating. It is made of summer-weight velvet, is very clingy and could have been worn by any number of art-deco socialites in a 1930's film, IT'S THAT GOOD. It's the dress I wore to the British Pavilion party at the Venice Biennale this summer with absolutely nothing underneath but a pair of fishnet stockings, stilettos, and the very last drops from my bottle of Chaos.

Best bit: she made the dress herself.

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, yes, Suzy, but did you pull in it? That is the true test.

Emma, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wedding present "all the songs sound the same" T

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma, of course I pulled. Are you insane ;)?

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma how could you. Are you some type of rockist? How dare you doubt the pulling power!

I cannot think of the longest serving item of clothing yet, but I can tell you some things I have lost and wish I hadn't. ONE is a briliant Joy Division tshirt. TWO is a pink Paul Frank tshirt. THREE is a nice silky blue shift dress (where IS that)?! Who else has lost clothing, what was it and do you want it back?

Sarah, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Duh. Pants.

Pete, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete are you saying you have lost your pants?

Emma, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A pair of black, almost knee-high boots from Bally in 1969 which served both my mother and me very well, but are now beyond use (but I can't bring myself to chuck them out).

Madchen, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I lost my lovely blue corduroy jacket at Ladyfest. This is still a cause of anguish to me.

RickyT, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was probably nicked by a mock lesbian.

Mark C, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

brown Slazenger zip-up tracksuit top - since c. 1994

Will, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Adidas Sambas (brown soled variety) bought in Vancouver in September 1995. I've just thrown away some boxer shorts which did me well in 1991. The oldest thing I have that I still wear is a suede jacket my dad had made for him for the princely sum of 16 guineas in 1969 - I bought it off him for the same amount in 1992. Aaw. Unforutnately, the stitching holding the cuffs on is beginning to perish - does anyone know of an answer to perished stitching, as the jacket is LOVELY and I couldn't bear to throw it away.

Mark C, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Madchen, get them to a cobbler and get them saved 'cos they're worth a bomb. Raus! Raus!

My other grandmother's hand-me-downs are worth a mention, too, because I wear them regularly, not just on special occasions. Have a grey tweed Peck and Peck suit from the '50s that, minus the fur collar on the jacket which I removed, looks like modern Japanese or Belgian designer items and causes jealousy in fashion editors I have known. It comes with a matching black cashmere sweater with a bandeau neckline.

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Probably my primary school tie which I still wear (though it's cheating really because I didn't wear it from about age 10 until I was about 18)

jamesmichaelward, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a black v-necked jumper which has been in my family since my mum was a teenager. It's in surprisingly good shape considering that she wore it every day through her teenages and early 20s, and then I wore it every day through the same era. Yes, I still wear it occasionally.

kate, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

addidas sl72s orange, sadly no longer made since for my bizarre feet they were the best fitting pair of trainers ever, need resoling but they will endure. I still morn the theft of my number one pair of walking boots 4 years ago.

Ed, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My pair of levis that I've had since I was 15. Simply the most comfortable pair of jeans in the world, age has given them a soft, flannel-like consistency that makes them feel like pajamas.

Nicole, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Crazy! I have orange SL72's. I've only had them for about 5 years, tho. Damned bastard shoes never quite fit my feet right, so you must have odd feet indeed, Ed.

kate, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

9 1/2 and narrower than AAA

Ed, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dark-blue t that says "JASPER". parents bought it for me when we were there (National Park, Canada) on a holiday in 1982. still sleep in it.

willem, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mine NEW ROCK b00ts. They have lasted me 4 years now. B00TS, remember.

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my penis.

Geoff, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well I have tons of 40 and 50's vintage which I wear on a regular basis but I don't think that's what this question's asking. So besides my glam dead people clothes I have a couple of sweaters I've worn for about a dozen years.

Samantha, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have my grandfather's old railroad workers' denim jacket, which dates to the forties or early fifties at the latest. But during high school, I thought it worked well with my punk outfits, and it got tattered to hell. Can't bear to throw it out, though. I also have many sweaters that my grandma made for my dad when he was a teenager, and those still look beautiful.

Kerry, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Far too many band shirts from the early nineties. But I refuse to ever let my "I know the way of Ned" shirt go away.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn I wish I had all my 80's concert t-shirts.

I have a pair of Levis 501s that are over 10 years old, but the button holes are so worn out that the fly won't stay closed.

Sean, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a feeling you're not going to be rectifying that situation any time soon, Sean. Or rather, you wear those jeans for appropriate moments. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a pink t-shirt that i've had since about fourth grade, or my coat, which i've had for a while and i can't remember how long. it is red and from land's end.

Maria, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Navy Blue Sweaters. One lambswool with no decoration. One cotton cableneck one.

anthony, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've also got a few shirts I've had since I was 14.

james, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Need you ask? Actually, the jacket doesn't count as it was replaced a couple of years back by one that wasn't hideously ripped and mangled, but it;s hung in my wardrobe for long years as I could never chuck it away. How depressing.

Al, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's the dress I wore to the British Pavilion party at the Venice Biennale this summer with absolutely nothing underneath but a pair of fishnet stockings, stilettos, and the very last drops from my bottle of Chaos.

Suzy inches ever closer to writing softcore. . . Shall we start some sort of exquisite corpse thread, where posters continually add to this sentence until Suzy is getting gangbanged by sweaty gondoliers?

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oi, it woz ver dress wot made me do it, guv'nor.

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's easy for me. If I dont wear it in a year, it's outta here! Lol I'm a poet and don't know it and my toes are Longfellows!!!!! Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't wear anything more than for 5 times. Then I throw it out, so that I don't have to wash it.

Ally, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

15 year old army jacket that is getting too ragged to wear in public, as it's been on top of mountains, in swamps, under the bridges of railroads, and beside bonfires.

badger, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some maroon jeans I bought aged 17. Still no holes. But I didn't wear them for years. I bought an ancient old donkey jacket a year or so later that I still have but don't wear very often.
